Kilgo makes most homers seem positively open-minded. What he’s really saying is that UNC won’t likely have a dominant team this season.

Kilgo is the worse of the worse

I agree. But, I also agree with his comments about the ACC this season. Just providing NC State ANOTHER great opportunity to do something specia.

The ACC has 4 Top 25 teams, with another, NC State, right on the cusp. The ACC has the almost consensus #1 team in the nation. The ACC has 3 of the 5 preseason AA picks.

The difference being: last year, the ACC went into the season with 3 teams picked for Final 4 status (GT, UNC, Duke). This year, only 1 has that “title.”

Last year, the ACC had 4 legit Top 10 teams going into the season — Duke, Wake, Carolina, & GT. But, last year was tougher than normal and isn’t an “annual average”.

The ACC ALMOST ALWAYS has at least 2 Top 10 teams with another team or two making a case for it.

This year, the ACC has ONE legit top ten team and a solid BC team as an obvious 2nd place choice.

I look at this as your barometer on this topic. ACC usually has at least 2 real Top 10 teams and often 3 to 5 Top 15 teams. This year we have 1 top ten team and maybe 2 Top 15 teams.

The strength of the league resembles what it looked like 2 years ago. Decent, but not your typical ACC.

^ Agree. And I forgot about Wake last year.

I agree that the ACC looks down right now, but maybe there will be surprises. It’s certainly a year for NC State not to feel “intimidated” about making a move toward the top.

I disagree with the assessment that the league is down this year. Maryland, which everyone seems to be forgetting, is an experienced squad whose only detriment is there lack of a superstar. State loses Hodge but gains experience. Duke is first-rate. No one should ever underestimate Georgia Tech (that’s what led them to a Final Four two years ago). BC has been consistently good for four years now. Miami and Va Tech were better last year than anyone expected (both finished 7-9). Carolina is very young but still could be a tournament team legitimately. Virginia, Clemson and Florida State will all probably have wins over teams in conference that they have no business beating. The ACC is fine. Call me a homer, but I still can’t find another OVERALL conference with this type of basketball strength. The Big elTevEN, the Big 12, SEC. All have good top programs but their bottoms are much worse. Big East, the same. No conference in my estimation will be stronger than the ACC by the season’s end.

Also, I really don’t care (even though he is right) that the ACC is down. Bowden doesn’t have to apologize destroying the ACC before someone thought we might should compete with them, Amato doesn’t get a break b/c ACC football is a pretty big priority.

First of all Kilgo is bitter due to UNC’s situation this season, and he is the worst kind of homer that’s true but the ACC is rarely down. It’s like saying your Bently is in the shop so you’ll have to take the Lamborghini to the club today.
At the end of the season the ACC will be at or near the top.

I guess it is all in the way one chooses to interpret the comments. I compare this year’s ACC to what I see as an “Average” ACC of the last 15 years and I think it is one of the weakest in memory.

“Don’t waste your breath telling me the ACC is a great league. I’m not buying it. Since Dec. 28, ACC teams have lost to Elon (Clemson), Air Force (Georgia Tech), Old Dominion (Virginia Tech) and Western Kentucky (Virginia).”
