ZaphodParticipant
But I’d also remind everyone that each of our last three coaches took their first team to the ACC Tournament finals (they all lost, of course)
Gottfried never made it to any ACC final but I get what you are saying. This team exceeded any of our expectations. One game will not define this season, team, or coach.
My bad….getting old, memory getting fuzzy…he made it to the semis that year. That was the “Noles > Holes” tournament.
ZaphodParticipantAfter 24ish hours to cool off, I am still very happy with this team…Keatts took a bunch of cast-offs and pieces parts and turned it into a team…something that hasn’t happened at State in a while. This team had some severe weaknesses, and BC exploited them all.
But I’d also remind everyone that each of our last three coaches took their first team to the ACC Tournament finals (they all lost, of course) and then those same coaches turned out to be fools gold…at least this result broke the cycle. Also, in some ways I was concerned that if Keatts won the Tourney and did well in the NCAA Tourney, he might immediately be seen as a hiring option for some of the other “big names” who are struggling this year…now maybe he’ll be overlooked and have some time to build an actual team.
Also, next years recruiting class is all big men and a replacement for Al Freeman (not counting the three transfers) so all the frustration at the current crop of big men (all of whom are gone now, with the possible exception of Yurtseven) can be laid to rest once the season is over.
This team has been playing with house money since they beat Duke. I’m very happy with the progress made so far.
ZaphodParticipantDon’t look now, and I hate to even mention it because of the “jinx” ramifications…but if we win out, and Duke beats UNC, we also have the tie-breaker on UNC…ie, we finish third as far as ACC Tourney seedings are concerned.
Who saw THAT possibility coming?
ZaphodParticipantGood day to be a State fan. Ryan Finley confirms the culture that Dave Doeren is building by sticking around, also giving himself a chance to teach as well as perform, and then the big win over Duke. The basketball team is starting to learn to play together. 6 players in double figures…pounding the ball down low. Really good signs…
ZaphodParticipantPer the News & Observer and every other source I’ve read:
“Suspended N.C. State sophomore guard Markell Johnson faces felonious assault charges in his hometown of Cleveland after an incident on Oct. 8, according to Ohio court documents.”
The incident happened October 8th.
ZaphodParticipantShaun Kirk played 8 minutes last night…that’s all you need to know about the game.
Something I did appreciate from the team that was different from last year…no head hanging as the beatdown got worse. At one point they were still fighting for a 20 point deficit. They were still playing hard, they just weren’t that good. I’m cool with that for now…hate watching them get slaughtered, but we saw that last year with better players on the team. At least Keatts still seems to have them playing hard and paying attention.
And who knows, maybe this extra playing time for kids who really shouldn’t be starting for an ACC team will be good for them down the road.
ZaphodParticipantGreat game yesterday, felt like the Pack was in control for the entire game.
I wouldn’t be surprised next season to see Hines moved to Samuels’ spot and Gallaspy taking over as the primary ball carrier. That dude has languished behind some good runners, but he has done a pretty good job when he gets touches, and he is the bruiser runner. That would then leave those two positions open the year after for Pennix and Person, who along with Leary (assuming Finley doesn’t leave) would all have a year of college football under their belts and 3 years to play together. And both Pennix and Person could be worked into the rotation next year to give them quality playing time…assuming, of course, that they are both up to the jobs.
ZaphodParticipantAm I the only Yankee fan in WPN?
No. Been a Yankees fan since 1964…
ZaphodParticipantif I remember correctly, Hines had committed to FSU and then flipped to the pack. Did he have something personally to prove? Maybe… but that “will” he showed on that run has been missing for a long time here at state (maybe even since the TA McLendon days)
Johnny Frasier (who left the team in May) was the running back that committed to FSU and then changed to State. IIRC, Hines was always a State man.
ZaphodParticipantYes…every poll I’ve seen say a good solid 50%+ oppose HB2, and around 35% support it.
ZaphodParticipantSyracuse and UNC-G play in the Carrier Dome, not in Greensboro…
ZaphodParticipantAn even more interesting note is that our rivals in the sissy blue down the street from us are NOT ranked.
ZaphodParticipantI just checked…the 5 players for BC with the most minutes this year: 1 freshman, 3 sophomores, one senior…so they are a young team slowly responding to coaching…and ya want to talk about being left with the cupboard bare? That would be BC.
Our lineup? One freshman, one third-year sophomore, one junior, 2 seniors.
The “we are a young team” shtick is getting very old.
ZaphodParticipantNot sure I get the love for Johnson…he’s shooting 36% from the floor and 25% from 3…and he is a terrible free throw shooter. I still think our best lineup is Smith, Henderson, Dorn, Abu, Anya…with Yurtseven first off the bench. I get wanting to take some of the ball-handling off Smith, but Johnson needs to stop shooting.
Of course, so does Smith…
ZaphodParticipantSo…the team that eliminated us in dramatic fashion this year is playing the team that eliminated us in dramatic fashion last year?! What are the odds?
ZaphodParticipantI guess our demise in the regionals could have been worse…we could have given up a grand slam in the bottom of the 9th of a shutout to be eliminated…
ZaphodParticipantAny news on today’s game? Is there a website where game status is tracked, so my dad (who’s 84) and I don’t get there and have to kill several hours waiting for a delay?
ZaphodParticipantI didn’t watch it because I turned on the UVa-Syracuse game just in time to see the first basket of the Syracuse run at the end, and I didn’t want to jinx Villanova.
ZaphodParticipantI know nothing about the machinations of the UNC investigation, but it took almost 8 years for the NCAA to sanction Syracuse for their misdeeds. I suspect that it takes a looooong time to go through all the evidence and tie all the leads and links together. I still assume that the TarHoles will get pounded.
ZaphodParticipantLOL…I was at the ’94 Peach Bowl, in the official NCSU administration section, but somebody sold their tickets to the seats right beside me to a Mississippi State fan and his son. I was all I could do to keep from grabbing those damn cowbells and crushing them. Glad we won that game…
ZaphodParticipantYeah, that football schedule is way off…most of the games listed here are on Sundays. Don’t think that’s right.
ZaphodParticipantSorry, Abu’s 5th foul was legit. He put his hand on the defender and pushed off. It might not have been a very hard push, but he DID push. The ND defender did a pretty good job of selling it, but it was a push. A ref is going to call pushing most every time he sees someone put a hand on the defender. He needs to be taught to keep hands off…use your butt.
ZaphodParticipantDon’t see a link to it, so…speaking of Coaching. MG Interview
ZaphodParticipantMaryland used to run a 1-3-1 with a tall wing player at the top of the zone…they played a 3/4 court 1-3-1 trap press, and it was very effective. I still don’t understand why more coaches don’t employ that press. I stole it when I coached a junior girls rec league team, only we pressed full court rather than 3/4 court. It was devastatingly effective. If you have a tall, deep team (ahem, Wolfpack) and you run this defense effectively, you can destroy teams.
ZaphodParticipantMrPlywood
BJ was doing his part all night (or at least for the 2nd half that I saw), but never got a pass thrown his way.
Wasn’t trying to imply BJ is incapable of receiving the pass on the pick-and-roll. More was trying to insinuate that the pick-and-roll doesn’t seem to be part of our offensive strategy.
I see Cat being very tentative attempting to pass into the post. It’s like he’s afraid to make that pass.
