I’d prefer not to lose by 70 points though 🙂
Talk about message board meltdown … holy moly
wufpup76KeymasterThanks a lot for the preview … as stated above, we really need this one for tourny hopes – unless we’re gonna just catch absolute fire in conference.
Live Blog + Dan Dakich ??? Infuriating or hilarious … OR BOTH?
Speaking of rpi and such things, we really could’ve used a Credit Union win last night at South Florida … alas, they lost in double OT.
wufpup76Keymaster“‘Why do you guys continue to refer to the fine mercenaries in stripes as ACC officials?”
^I think it may mostly be ignorance (no disrespect intended, of course).
I call them ‘ACC’ refs because they’re the same cast of characters, but of course they do B1G and other games. IMO, ‘they’ (the magic ‘they’) need to regulate schedules for these guys a lot better. I understand that they’re able to go for as many games as they can get, but these are middle-aged or older guys traveling everyday doing an insane amount of games. That’s going to impact anyone in a negative way at some point.
As for the game, I should’ve mentioned that I’m happy for Turner and Washington … Washington gave great unsung minutes and calmly knocked down two crucial free throws under a minute to play.
wufpup76KeymasterOn the radio, we sounded ok – even though it was frustrating not to really pull away (though once it was up to 16 you figured you’re probably ok).
I was able to make it home to see the last 10 minutes or so, which were pretty frustrating to watch. It didn’t really seem possible, but the lead evaporated quickly. A few too many missed free throws down the stretch and a few poor decisions on offense and Detroit made us pay.
Vandy’s last foul was utter bull, and we hardly saw Vandy or Barber … I suppose we should get used to it.
Another frustrating thing about the last ten minutes: Mark Thomas seemed to call the game from a strictly Detroit perspective, and he really didn’t know what he was talking about on several items. Oh well, at least he’s a State guy.
We have to do something about Hack-A-Freeman in the last three minutes (one of things Thomas got completely wrong was that Detroit clearly fouled Freeman on purpose with still over three minutes to play … 20% free throw shooter why wouldn’t you?).
wufpup76KeymasterI didn’t know good news existed anymore for Pack football 🙂
Well done
wufpup76Keymaster“… Coach K would have been fired before he had a chance to win 171 ACC titles and 47 national championships.”
^Wow, I didn’t know he has done all that! 🙂
12/12/2013 at 5:25 PM in reply to: Barry Jacobs: “NC State’s Jordan Vandenberg emerges on the court” #34821wufpup76KeymasterTo be completely fair, so far we’ve seen mostly ‘ACC’ refs in our games this season: Eades, Ayers, Jones, Natili, Dorsey, etc … and it’s worked out ok so far (Central game notwithstanding).
What will be of keen interest is if the consistency and transparency continues.
wufpup76Keymaster^Has to be said for every major opening.
wufpup76Keymaster^Was this Eades & company ‘line in the sand’ in the first game?
Unreal, all the way around.
wufpup76KeymasterAssume the position, boys.
wufpup76KeymasterThe NIT is about to get it’s first automatic qualifier as 1 seed UT-Martin is about to go down to Morehead St. in the OVC semis.
wufpup76Keymaster“wulfpup – In 98 FSU actually won their first round NCAA tourney game against TCU (I think.) They should have won their second round game but collapsed.”
^I remember. They lost to Bryce Drew and Valpo after Drew’s heroics against Ole Miss. And you are correct about FSU’s first round opponent – it was TCU. Valpo played Rhode Island in the Sweet 16 that season … wacky stuff … that makes the tournament great.
wufpup76KeymasterGood write-up with some nice humor … even though I am a message board monkey and that hurt my feelings 😉
“But before you jump in too hard on demanding a consistent formula, I need to point out that if the NCAA Selection Committee strictly used the Dance Card formula, then NC State would have been left out of the tournament in 2003 and 2005. As always, be careful what you wish for.”
^I’m glad they leave some room for interpretation / debate as opposed to something hard-lined or ultimately formulaic. As long as there isn’t a consistent trend of obvious errors (snubs and/or unworthy teams getting in) then I don’t have a problem with this. This one area is definitely why a team like St. Mary’s (Ca) is even being discussed as getting Patty Mills back from injury is obviously huge for them. I don’t necessarily think that the Gaels deserve a bid, but I don’t mind the debate.
As for conference tourny wins – which I absolutely agree have a huge impact – I will offer one notable exception. In 1998, Florida State (then under current Hole assistant Steve Robinson) went 6-10 and lost the first round of the ACC tourny to guess who – NC State. Yet the Noles were the last team in as a 12 seed. IIRC, Florida State had defeated Duke, UConn, and the Holes that season and had a couple of other big victories that helped them overcome such a shoddy profile. This would seem to add weight to the “Big wins mean almost everything and bad losses don’t cancel them out” category. I think this is a pretty huge exception, b/c if I am remembering correctly the Noles didn’t exactly finish strongly before losing to State in that Thursday night game. That squad seemed to defy every criteria save for “big wins.”
^I think there have been a couple of other similar situations since then – from power conferences of course – but I’m having trouble recalling them.
FYI, 1998 was one of the years where the 9 league conference had the 1 seed play the 9 seed on Thursday and the winner advanced to the semis, while the 7 and 8 seeds faced each other on Thursday night and would have had to win 4 games in 4 days to win the tourny. So technically, you were better off finishing 9th to have a really good shot at winning the tourny as opposed to 7 or 8. It was also the year of the Bersticker crotch grab … if only karma would have worked before our eyes.
02/10/2009 at 10:05 AM in reply to: ACC officials embarrass league, spark (Jamie) ‘Luckie’ comeback #35374wufpup76KeymasterI think now might be a good time for a funny thread … or a make fun of Duke / Holes thread … or satire … or anything other than what we’ve been beating our heads in over since Sunday …
Just my opinion 😉
Something like the Ed Hightower funny pics linked from deadspin … that was riot funny

and the night,
the night is yours alone …When you’re sure you’ve had enough …
of this Pack,
well hang on …Don’t let your Wolfpack go …
everybody cries …
and every Pack hurts …Some-times
Sometimes every play is wrong,
now it’s time to sing along …When your game is night alone,
(hold on, hold on)
If you feel like letting go,
(hold on)When you think you’ve had too much …
of this Pack,
well hang onEverybody hurts,
take comfort in your Wolfpack …Everybody hurts,
don’t throw your hand,
oh no, don’t throw your handIf you feel like you’re alone,
no, no, no, you are not aloneIf you’re on your own …
in this game,
the games and nights are longWhen you think you’ve had too much
of this Pack …
to hang onWell, everybody hurts …
Some-timesEverybody cries …
and everybody hurts …
Some-times
And everybody hurts Some-times,
so hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on (repeat & fade)

I saw little evidence of either … I know about Smith’s injury, but he’s been playing through it … As for handling double teams, I didn’t see many from VT
Williams for Smith must have been a defensive / matchup decision whenever the Hokies went smaller … That is an NBA coaching move – maintaining matchups … I did not agree with it today – I thought Smith should have played more in the 2nd half / overtime
02/08/2009 at 5:12 PM in reply to: ACC officials embarrass league, spark (Jamie) ‘Luckie’ comeback #35255wufpup76Keymaster^About the whole Jamie Lucky allowed to ref our games stuff …
Not sure if this will be the case for Luckie or not, but Larry Rose didn’t work any of our games for over 2 seasons (IIRC) after that technical call against us in the ACC semis in 04 against Maryland (not to mention several other “blown” calls that went against us from him in games /seasons prior to that)
Now that guy really did have it in for us … no debate … One of our fans or someone associated with us must have really pissed in his corn flakes sometime … I would guess that some of the things that get yelled at our home games (personal stuff about players and refs) probably had something to do with it, cause I knew we would have a tough time winning whenever Rose was working the game
02/08/2009 at 5:03 PM in reply to: ACC officials embarrass league, spark (Jamie) ‘Luckie’ comeback #35248wufpup76KeymasterOhh I definitely want to quit watching / supporting, but can’t really bring myself to do so because I love the Wolfpack so … I want to be loyal and to be there for the good times (hahahaahahaha!!!) if there ever will be any
So, I’m not quitting, but that said I am giving more than strong consideration to NOT buying any Wolfpack tickets or making any type of Wolfpack donations for this year and next
But I know I probably will because I’m a huge idiotic sucker when it comes to the Wolfpack … I want to believe … I don’t want to give up … blah, blah … wahh wahh
Thus the cycle will continue

In other news, BC – Wake appears to be a good game at the moment
02/08/2009 at 4:42 PM in reply to: ACC officials embarrass league, spark (Jamie) ‘Luckie’ comeback #35236wufpup76Keymaster“THe officiating was almost as bad as our substitutions patterns.”
Agree. Why we played Williams over Smith in the 2nd and in OT is beyond me … I understand splitting time, but the entire time? Smith gets no minutes down the stretch?
Thomas 0 minutes … Fergs 0 minutes
Javi starts and all of a sudden we’re back up to 20 turnovers after being around 10 against Miami and whoever else we lost to before that
Simply not understanding
02/08/2009 at 4:36 PM in reply to: ACC officials embarrass league, spark (Jamie) ‘Luckie’ comeback #35233wufpup76KeymasterGreenburg after the game:
“One of the refs comes up to me with about 3 min. to play and says “This is a hell of a game!” … “I say, “Maybe for you guys.” … “Not sure how much fun this was for me and Sidney.”
Whatever Greenburg, your asshattery helped get you the win today … Now you can finally scream out “This is for HWSNBN, b*tches!” … I know you’ve been waiting on that one for a while … a**hole
02/08/2009 at 4:34 PM in reply to: ACC officials embarrass league, spark (Jamie) ‘Luckie’ comeback #35228wufpup76KeymasterHere are Sidney’s comments from the postgame:
Postgame comments:
Tony: Gutwrenching loss?
SL: Yes, guys played hard … very frustrating
Tony: What happened to offense in 2nd half?
SL: We didn’t respond/read … Officials let ’em play, which is fine … We lost our composure after a big play
Tony: Intentional foul called – what did the refs say?
SL: We were told “Excessive contact.” (Priceless. Surreal.)
Tony: Got the ball to Ben on last play, what happened?
SL: They got 3 guys on him, blah blah blah
Tony: Was McCauley great today?
SL: Oh yeah.
Overtime – what do you tell the team on the way into OT?
I told them we’ve done it before. Let’s establish defensively … blah blah
WHATEVER … A LOSS TODAY WAS COMPLETE AND UTTER BULLSHIT
Gary Hahn now even b*tching about the refs – especially on the last play …. Then says, Pack makes free throws, they probably win
02/08/2009 at 4:32 PM in reply to: ACC officials embarrass league, spark (Jamie) ‘Luckie’ comeback #35227wufpup76KeymasterI tend to agree with this post … We should have put them away, but there’s no denying the Hokies had a ton of help in the second half
One play that sticks out to me is directly after the intentional foul bullshit and the 3 pointer by Thorns (or whoever) and then Delaney … We’re still up 10, Allen hacks Horner’s arm off and gets a dunk … That was really Allen’s 10th foul, but no call … Capel, in exasperation, screams “That’s A FOUL! … (giggle)” when seeing the replay … Nope, instead it contributes
Then Allen fouls out in OT on a hedgeplay after being allowed to play WWE for the entire 2nd half
Simply pathetic and miserable day
