“My problem is, it’s almost NEVER called this way. Why pick that time, that situation to inexplicably rediscover your rule book?”
^Justin Gainey with the ball, up two at Duke with under a minute to play. No pressure on the ball. Gainey is stationary and dribbling while setting the play. ‘Whistle!!!’ Call: carrying the ball.
No other such call made during the game, and more than likely no warning. The question is more than valid – why pick that time, that situation to inexplicably rediscover the rule book?
Yeah, I know … I live with tin-foil hats and black helicopters.
Tbh, I didn’t think much of the call when watching. I thought it could’ve went either way – on the floor OR and-1. I thought technically the call was correct. Others making arguments for the and-1 call have valid points though. My tin-foil hat suggests that Warren would’ve been called for an intentional foul plus the basket would’ve counted were the roles reversed. After all, we’ve never had any back-breaking calls go against us before (sarcasm, for those who for whatever reason may not be aware).
wufpup76KeymasterNot able to watch, but the Tar Heel radio guys are going crazy with respect to the fouls … it’s really amusing b/c it’s like bizarro world.
The whining after McAdoo’s 5th foul was epic.
wufpup76Keymaster“The Clemson game is a horrible one at a horrible time. A win proves little to the Selection Committee and a loss would suggest that the close game at SYR was just a fluke. I’ve seen State (and others) lay eggs at Little John so many times over the years that Clemson would have to be truly horrible for me to ever pencil in a win there.”
^This previous game may beat us twice no matter who or where we would play next. It’s just a tough scheduling break that it’s at Clemson, which would be tough on us regardless.
wufpup76Keymaster“People can argue all day about the TJW foul, but the constant fouls called away from the ball that enabled Syracuse to score during much of the second half are what still has me angry. They were constantly getting all of their points from the charity stripe (17-1 free throw count at one point).”
^This was truly the difference in the game. IIRC, there were two holding calls against Washington within 10 seconds … both away from the ball – and I think a third holding call on Washington within the next minute of game play. We didn’t get a single replay of a foul called away from the ball, which by-and-large was the only reason Syracuse was in the game at that point (tons of free throws).
Now, if you want to say that our guys were warned about style of play and but committed fouls anyway – that’s fine. But this was a complete inverse of the way the game was called in the first half. In that half, we were aggressive and got in the bonus well before Syracuse. Why the change? If you want to give credit to Syracuse, that’s fine – but the overwhelming amount of fouls on us in the 2nd half were away from the ball.
They may have been fouls … but who knows? We didn’t get to see any of them. Combine that with the discrepancies of how the game was called in half #1 and the free throw disparity in the second half and you can see why people might be upset. Should we have gotten to line more in the 2nd half? Perhaps not – but our defense won that game Saturday. Free throws from off the ball calls made the difference. I don’t blame anyone for being upset by losing to off the ball foul calls.
wufpup76KeymasterIt felt to me more like we blew it … free throws, missed opportunities and turnovers that a team makes when trying to take the next step.
Very deflating. It’s not over, but our ncaa chances are probably nil. I don’t see how we don’t lose by 20+ at Clemson after this.
Syracuse was not very good; at the same time we had something to do with that. I didn’t like how they got to the line so much in the second half compared to our few attempts, but we lost to the usual suspects: lack of production late, turnovers, and other team ft’s
Damn.
wufpup76Keymaster^You are so allowed … we’re all State brethren 🙂
Disagreements happen, just like snow and ice hahaha
wufpup76Keymaster^Agree – it will probably be close to 20 🙁
wufpup76KeymasterFair enough, Bill … let’s just hope for a 40 point outburst against Syracuse hahaha
Re: Washington – the best thing about his game this season has been his intangibles: tons of energy and spirit. The consummate glue guy … start adding production to that and it is a very potent combo.
Washington seems like the type of player / guy who will take huge strides next season … he’s still fun to watch this season.
wufpup76Keymaster“Will CUZ be a leader again tonight or will he just get his twenty?”
^I’m not seeing the suggested lack of leadership. His performances have for the most part been very consistent with respect to both production and effort. Also, I’m thrilled with how he lets the offense come to him and how a very high percentage of his scores come off of putbacks / offensive rebounds.
Even with occasional poor shot selection, he’s still not forcing the offense – that has been a pg issue all season. What do you see specifically that suggests a lack of leadership (honest question – not meant in a snide tone)?
He doesn’t seem to be a vocal leader, so there’s that – but this aspect of ‘leadership’ is extremely overrated imo (unless it’s communicating on the floor during play – that’s a must). I’m not suggesting that this specifically is what you meant, but it’s worth mentioning . If Warren’s quiet / soft spoken – it doesn’t matter (again, imo). Leading by example and correcting mistakes/behaviors are where it’s at for me.
Tangent – I’d want to strangle Ray Lewis (no pun intended, har har) – he’s great at leading by example – but the dancing/preening/getting in the face stuff can gtho … I can do my job without that crap … in fact, it would be a detriment to me doing my job.
wufpup76Keymaster^^Awful basketball the last time around, yet even after reading all of the above a victory should have been had.
I’m guessing every single thing doesn’t go Wake’s way tonight and that Cavanaugh doesn’t come out and hit 4 consecutive three-pointers.
Really like our chances so long as the focus and intensity is there.
wufpup76KeymasterReally need this one, and I think we have a good shot … Going to be very difficult to get a win though – it’s at their place and they are the antithesis of what State attempts to accomplish.
For the love of God, I hope we don’t come out flat. Keep our heads in it, make good decisions, maintain focus and I like our chances.
wufpup76Keymaster^Anything sports related turns into a crapfest. Wait …
wufpup76KeymasterI saw the tread title and my first thought was, “oh, that should go over well”.
^Haha yep.
wufpup76KeymasterWish the best for him … seems like a good guy, and he gave it his best with a good attitude this past season.
wufpup76Keymaster” (End of Diatribe #238 on the importance of OOC scheduling.)”
^But there can never be enough diatribes on this subject imo.
Bottom line for State – we need to win a lot of games. We more-or-less need to sweep VaWolf’s ‘undecided’, ‘middle’, and ‘bottom’ games (‘bottom games’ – tee hee) unless we find a way to win at Syracuse. A win at Pitt would be helpful so far as raw numbers, but they’ve literally beaten no one of significance.
wufpup76Keymaster“and how.many would complain about bringing up an old sore point.”
No one here complains. Ever. (andddd … exhale). Just like the media is never actually wrong, just topical – you know?
wufpup76KeymasterRick, your phone makes some pretty sweet auto-corrects.
I wonder if Judy knows how much Warren is averaging her when his committing his 2+ fouls per game? I’ve also never seen a non-biased Lyckie. My gf loves my biased Lyckies. Ok, sorry … I’ll stop.
wufpup76Keymaster“Frank Reich, baby! Bills over Oilers in the playoffs.. down 35-0 iirc”
^Correct -> 35-0 and 35-3 at halftime. Buffalo outscored Houston 35-3 in the second half and won in OT, 41-38.
Congrats to Russell, Hauschka, and Sweezy … Get ’em next time, Nate.
Bonus SB gif … it was over as soon as this:
wufpup76Keymaster“Anyone who uses pre-season expectations or NC State’s previous 2 coaches to rate Gottfried is suffering from a cognitive bias called anchoring.”
^Fair enough. Saying Gottfried is way better than the previous two coaches does not equate to rating him or calling him ‘great’, though. Different things entirely. It will always come down to the same things: money, timing, and whether or not the next girl is (perceived to be) better. Opportunity costs vs. trade-offs.
I believe in objectively laying out all pros and cons of any ‘situation’ as opposed to pushing a judgement … Very comfortable in saying I’m in the minority here on this.
For example, saying “I am proud the team did not quit” does not equate to “wow, we have a great team and the next John Wooden is on our sideline! Doesn’t matter that we’re losing! It’s all ok!” Yet people have this infuriating habit of taking the former quote and twisting it into the latter quote. Interwebz ftw.
wufpup76Keymaster“We will own them here. If…we manage a couple on the road.”
^Maybe … I dunno … so many offensive rebounds.
wufpup76KeymasterWe’ll just agree to disagree, hopefully. No moral victories … If you don’t like or believe in Gott, that’s fine. He is <strike>leap</strike> light years beyond the last two, imo.
HWSNBN would take teams favored to win both at home and on the road against the Holes and get absolutely trounced, with his respective teams giving up halfway through the first half.
Lowe’s teams were so unorganized and mentally unprepared that they shouldn’t have bothered showing up.
So yeah, Gott is 1-5 against the Holes – including the wonderfully officiated ACC Tournament semifinal the other season. Have any of his teams quit though? Call it a moral victory if you want. I call it changing the culture and attitude and will hopefully lead to victories in the future.
wufpup76KeymasterIt would have been a lot better if we’d just hung our heads and lost by 40. Right?
wufpup76KeymasterCareful Doris, we don’t want to talk about missed fouls against Carolina
wufpup76KeymasterFought hard in the second half, we just got our asses kicked.
wufpup76KeymasterNice little 9-0 run while it lasted
