“Do me a favor and drop a note in here if you appreciated this kind of stuff being shared in the forums or if you hate it.”
^Imo, the forums are the forums … post away! Besides, we’re all sandy vag*na suffering State fans, so if we can’t laugh then what?
OH GOD I DON’T WANT TO KNOW
02/26/2014 at 7:34 PM in reply to: Somebody’s gotta cover the game since Technician is too busy #42493wufpup76Keymaster“Reagan was a terrible president.”
🙂
wufpup76Keymaster“What he’s saying is if you go through the forums then the content of my preview doesn’t show up (just the comments) as opposed to going through the main page.”
^I just tested this, and it’s correct. Thanks. I had got it in my head that the article section loaded even in the forums (could’ve sworn it did).
Looks like we don’t need it Plywood haha … unless there’s already so many comments in the preview section.
wufpup76Keymaster“You can add comments to the preview entry from the forums. Thus we shouldn’t need a separate thread.”
^True, but I was referring mostly to having to load the images and scroll on each page (first world problems, I know). But it’s all good 🙂
wufpup76Keymaster“I really have no idea how to fill out my brackets this year. Which is no big deal, given how badly I suck at it.”
^Just means you’ll do better than usual 🙂
wufpup76KeymasterThanks a lot for the write-up / preview.
I wish I could say something that would at the very least stoke the fire of (false) hope; alas, all I have is ‘let’s just see what happens’.
BTW – any objection to starting a ‘game thread’ in the forums? I’d be happy to start one if folks would use it instead of the preview. The previews are wonderful, but kinda tough on the ol’ pc when going through page by page when the previews double as the game thread. The images, etc. make for a lot of scrolling and stuff – no complaints, of course – just a thought 🙂
wufpup76Keymaster“Finally, someone needs to step up and be the leader of this squad. All too often they look like a rudderless boat trying to navigate Grade 4 rapids.”
^Hopefully Lewis. Even though it was against VT, still had to like what was on display last Saturday (save for the last 8 minutes – this is where Lewis as the pg needs to really steer the ship). Plus, VT’s zone D had been pretty effective going into that game.
As for next season, I have high hopes for both Lewis and Washington as team leaders. If only we had an Alex Johnson and/or CJ Williams every season.
As for that bubble, a win tomorrow night may get us ever so slightly back into the conversation.
wufpup76Keymasterwufpup76Keymaster“Which one–play or officiating–exerts more impact on game outcomes? Our play, or officiating?”
^This is why I say this is a never ending argument. The “we’re just not that good” side will always say team play has more impact. True? Valid? I say yes.
The “bias” side will point to the numerous times where one or a few calls basically decides the contest in the other team’s favor. The refrain is “we did enough to win, but that call / those calls directly costs us the game”. Well, this is also true. It does happen. It will continue to happen. As others have alluded to, the real question is do certain refs or a subset of refs have a bias against a certain team/teams?
I state again that I believe most / all refs attempt complete objectivity while performing their duties. That said, I also believe that it’s dismissive to suggest that human nature (bias) doesn’t play a part. ‘X player is better/more athletic than Y player. X player gets the call on a close play.’ ‘X team is better than Y team. X team benefits from the subjective calls (Duke flops anyone?).’ ‘Y team has a reputation or tendency to be lazy and foul a lot.’
Tendencies. Reputations. Once those are decided, it’s damn near impossible to change someone’s mind on them. You see what you want to or believe you should see. Refs – they’re human.
wufpup76Keymaster^^Tough for me to come down on one side or the other at a meta-level.
Feels like a catch-22: *If* we were the best team in the league would we actually get the benefit of close calls? Even if we’re not the best team, should not each and every call be made objectively no matter what?
I do believe there is some bias – particularly on an individual (ref) level. They’re human, and human nature dictates bias. That said, do I believe that they all try to do their jobs objectively? For the most part, yes (no one will ever convince me though that the immortal Larry Rose didn’t have it in for State).
To the point that ‘we’re just not that good and the calls reflect it’ – I think that is very valid. However, NC State Sh*t doesn’t exist in a vacuum. I think we can all recite numerous games (including two this season) where calls or non-calls directly impacted the result of the contest in the other team’s favor.
So, does that happen to everybody else? Yes and no. How many times has it happened to Duke and *arolina? You can, however point to it happening against other teams across the nation (usually when they’re playing a favored opponent – notably in the ACC we can all probably come up with a horrible call costing each ACC team when they are playing Duke and *arolina in the past). A counter-point to that is ‘well, Duke and *arolina are usually better teams with better players’. That is accurate. However, why does that justify getting the benefit of every close call?
This sounds like a never ending argument.
wufpup76Keymaster^I can’t find a replay of that call anywhere, MrPlywood.
Syracuse was getting out on a fastbreak and Thornton (iirc) kinda grabbed at the Cuse player … There was barely any contact yet Luckie immediately signaled for a flagrant foul (there was hardly a jersey grab). Reach-in foul, yes … flagrant? – no way.
wufpup76Keymaster^Sorry Mike – I agreed with you on the ‘flagrant 1’ call Luckie made. Bad call.
I went straight for the Boeheim apocalypse haha.
wufpup76Keymaster“Wolfpup76, did Tyler Lewis really the biggest reason for his success was “Playing Time” or was that a joke? If so, that’s awesome. Tyler’s only downfall is speed on D and size (well 3?s as well) He runs the offense well.
Then again I love WBS so I am clearly bias.”^Bill is correct – he did more or less say that. It would have been hilarious had he dead-panned it like that, but his response was (basically) “I had limited minutes in earlier games, but now I’m getting a lot of playing time and finding the groove of the game”. I took him as being diplomatic and thought he just wanted to straight up say “Playing time. Next question.”
wufpup76KeymasterNow it’s official: welcome to The ACC (go blues!) Boeheim and Syracuse.
I thought it was a block, and a pretty clear one. Looked like Greene had his mind made up before the play happened. Hood had barely planted his feet and was in motion – jumping slightly – towards Fair while Fair was airborne. Keep in mind that earlier in the half a Cuse player was basically perfectly still on a blocking call that allowed Parker a three-point play (Greene did not make this particular call though, it was Ayers). Still, consistency – please.
As for the reaction, I can’t say I blame Boeheim one bit. If it’s a tournament game and you still have a chance to win and advance then you should try to keep a cool head. Regular season game? Go ahead and make an a$s of yourself and call bullsh*t for what it is – bullsh*t. I’d much rather go out like that than the usual “you’ll bend over and you’ll like it” crap the cabal dishes your way. I will never be a fan of the “you got robbed – but it was your reaction to getting robbed that is the real problem!” line of reasoning. Bullsh*t is bullsh*t is bullsh*t. Yeah ok – I got cheated, but I’m the one who has the issue. Right …
wufpup76KeymasterTony: Unx game coming up blah blah blah
Gott: Yeah, they’re playing really well. Maybe the hottest team in the country. I’m so proud of our guys. No one thought we’d have much of a chance to do anything. I’m sure Unx will be favored by 20 – everyone thinks we have no shot. This is a true ‘David vs. Goliath’. They’re so hot and our kids don’t get credit for anything. We’ll be ready. This could be a huge upset … one of the biggest upsets maybe … ever.
^LOLLLLLLL awesome
Then this from Tyler Lewis:
Gary: Tyler you’ve got 5 billion assists and only 5 turnovers in your last nine games. What do you think the difference has been for you?
Lewis: Playing time.
^HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
wufpup76KeymasterGott’s postgame comments re: the *nx game were lulzy
wufpup76KeymasterGott’s comments on the radio postgame re: *nc were lulz-worthy …
I’ll type ’em up in a sec
Edit: Oops wrong thread
wufpup76KeymasterHE MADE THE SECOND ONE. HOLY SH*T.
wufpup76KeymasterIf VT could do anything AT ALL they would’ve won this game. This doesn’t even feel like a win.
wufpup76KeymasterHaha there’s Barber
This is infuriating.
wufpup76KeymasterWhy Kyle? Why????
wufpup76KeymasterNo matter what happens, this homestretch has been particularly embarrassing. Hokies shouldn’t even have hope right now.
wufpup76KeymasterThat dude double-dribbled.
wufpup76KeymasterWe’re are trying manically to give this game away.
wufpup76KeymasterHow is that their ball?
