Good effort by the kids from ND … hope to see a good effort from the Pack. In most games this season, the Pack has given a good effort – regardless of how the season has turned out.
wufpup76KeymasterDang pup, you’re supposed to act like there’s a no-hitter in progress…
The shame is that I knew better 🙁
wufpup76Keymaster^Well, all it took was my posting about it and ND hasn’t scored in 4 minutes … my stupid NC State karma
wufpup76KeymasterND has outscored *nx 22-5 in the second half and leads by 3. It has actually turned into an entertaining game.
wufpup76Keymaster^That’s fair, but I recall some good defensive performances – of course, a lot of teams/coaches look decent defensively compared to Lowe teams and the first iterations of Gott’s teams.
wufpup76Keymaster“Tony Bennett, Leonard Hamilton and Jim Laranaga are amongst the three best DEFENSIVE coaches in the country. I conclude that if you play good defense consistently then every now and then everyone else will be bad enough for you to hit a little peak while other programs struggle.”
^True – plus Virginia has once again benefited from an unbalanced schedule in a top-heavy league. They beat Pitt on the road, and lost to Duke on the road (probably should have won the Duke game). They played Syracuse and *nx at home. That’s it though as far as tests among the top teams. The rest of the ACC is easily beaten home or away. This is certainly not to discredit Virginia’s accomplishments thus far in the season – just factual.
I’ve been ripped for lauding Bennett when he was first hired, and also ripped for making fun of his style of play – so that’s a microcosm of any fanbase I guess. The bottom line is that you will usually have a chance to win if you play D. HWSNBN usually had solid defensive teams, there was just a lot of other things that weren’t right about his teams. Bennett and Virginia may have hit a sweet spot this season, but it’s early yet. I’m anxious to see what will happen with them should they make the Sweet 16.
wufpup76KeymasterI agree with those inferring that Gott is safe through next season, with those results likely dictating the near future. A strong Ncaa birth may mean another extension, a bubble birth probably means no hot seat (not cold, either), NIT equals some real heat, less than that is most likely serious heat or possibly worse if disaster strikes.
While I’m throwing out my worthless $.02, I also wanted to add that if we’re going to continue to get athletes like Cat, Warren, Washington, etc and have a deep roster then I would love to see more of what we saw Saturday – some 3/4 court pressure / trap or some all out press. Warren was super effective at the point of that D, and Lee was a good fit for it as well. If we’re going to play a gambling defensive style then go for broke IMO. If halfcourt defense / rebounding are your biggest weaknesses and transition offense is your greatest strength, then do everything possible to minimize the halfcourt game.
^If we have shooters however, that opens up many more possibilities. We can still pressure the ball on defense, but don’t have to be afraid of an actual halfcourt set when we’re on offense. I haven’t written off this season, but am intrigued to see what next season will bring. I really like the nucleus of this team.
wufpup76KeymasterBiggest play – down 1, Washington gets free for a dunk but misses. Warren gets the rebound but offensive foul.
13-0 run Miami. No excuse, but we looked completely out of gas during that stretch. I think a Wed night hangover from the emotional letdown may have played a part.
wufpup76KeymasterI feel really bad for them. If nothing else, they have fought hard this season.
Defense was mostly awful, but the Cuse, Wake, and *nx games did them in. Now we’ll probably finish 10th and have to play on Wednesday. Damn damn damn
wufpup76KeymasterWay to go Cat, game might be over but that was impressive
wufpup76Keymaster13-0 run after we went up 1 … brutal
wufpup76KeymasterWell sh*t
Now we might finish 10th. Damn it.
wufpup76KeymasterI don’t know if Warren will have enough energy to get the ball to the rim on this upcoming free throw
wufpup76KeymasterWe expended so much energy coming back and taking the lead … and now this 🙁
Doesn’t look like our day. Once again, wrong type of team to play after the heartbreak the other night. Sh*t.
wufpup76KeymasterAn awful turn of events
wufpup76Keymaster“I don’t think WBS is as bad on defense as people think he is.”
^I agree. Not good, but serviceable.
wufpup76KeymasterThis line-up sans Anya or Vandy has been highly effective w/ Warren taking the point on D … huge difference the last 6 minutes
wufpup76KeymasterWarren won’t let us lose … amazing
wufpup76KeymasterThank you sean hull … Jesus
wufpup76Keymaster^Yeah Wuf – I guess … b/c Miami player was nowhere near set
wufpup76KeymasterMan they are getting some breaks holy cow
that was a block … sean hull
wufpup76KeymasterLooked like that might have been a clean strip for Lee
wufpup76KeymasterThere we go TJ
wufpup76KeymasterTime for us to get a bounce (I know we haven’t created our own luck any today, but still – it’s time!)
wufpup76KeymasterFour point swing maybe … Freeman definitely fouled
Warren forcing it too much today. They’re getting every bounce right now. Just when we’re about to get some momentum – I don’t see how the Freeman play isn’t called.
