Seth Greenberg just reversed course during halftime of the Miami-Richmond Nit game and is now picking Louisville. Says that Pitino will find a way to neutralize Barber and Louisville will win. The narrative has shifted to ‘Pitino can’t be beat with a week to prepare’.
Excellent.
wufpup76Keymaster‘Herb just fired the ASU fans. Good for him!!!’
wufpup76KeymasterFor any of you who wonder if stuff written here or elsewhere is read by the players or otherwise gets back to them:
Trevor Lacey was just on Adam & Joe’s radio show. They discussed a lot of things, and motivation came up … I didn’t hear or see this over the weekend, but the players knew of and apparently referenced the VUhoops blog post that referred to State as a “mere speed bump” after the game.
Just something to consider for everyone when they’re writing about 17-22 year old kids, the team, program, etc.
Unfortunate or not, they’re very aware.
wufpup76KeymasterMark Price may have been offered the Charlotte job
That might be interesting
wufpup76Keymasterwufpup76Keymaster^People who actually know basketball – i.e. – other head coaches – drool over what Cat brings to the table (no pun intended).
Buzz Williams and Jamie Dixon raved about Barber over the weekend. They seriously did not stop talking about Barber the whole weekend.
wufpup76KeymasterRemember all year how I talked about variance. I said we would be more likely to upset Duke than UVA, because Duke was more high variance, and UVA was extremely low variance.
The exact same people who belittle State and Gottfried for their ‘inconsistency’ immediately turn around and belittle Bennett and UVa for their ‘consistent’ ceiling.
It wouldn’t be as funny if it weren’t this sad.
Really, f*** them.
wufpup76KeymasterSome interesting comments following the article. One commenter referred to State as moo u.
Behold, the entitled, elitist hole fan decreeing what others should want and expect in their own programs … of course, this thought process doesn’t apply to his school – they’re better! What I wouldn’t give to have Herb as the next Cheats coach.
“second school he’s been at that has fired him after consistent success. every school thinks they can just change the coach and win a national championship. news flash, asu, you will never win the championship so be satisfied with someone who takes you there half the time. so many schools would kill for the success they had under sendek, just like at moo u”
If there is a just God, Chapel Hill’s sports programs will receive the brimstone that they deserve.
wufpup76KeymasterI think most of the experts equate good coaching with consistent performance
^That’s the thing about perception and media and fans, etc. – people like Goodman are far from experts. Goodman is a troll weasel who uses his position as some form of psuedo-power fantasy. He yearns to be a part of the story rather than just report it.
I get a good laugh when people like Goodman bring silly, ignorant criticism. This is the same guy that trolls the fanbase with ‘know your place’ quotes and then when State / State’s coach gets even a little success he revels in making fun of how it occurred and belittling the current coach.
Criticism is fine. Absolutely fine and necessary. But when it’s just throw away trolling crap like Goodman delivers it’s lowest common denominator ‘story’ conjuring.
I’ll listen to Greenberg, Jay Williams, Bilas and the rest who actually played and/or coached the game. I may not always agree with what they say, but their words carry a ton more weight. I think (know) ex-coaches can go way overboard on sticking up for their brethren, but at least they’ve been in the trenches and know what others are facing.
On the Gottfried discussion, he was on Andy Katz’ show yesterday and the interview really cuts to the heart of the matter imo. I haven’t been able to find the interview online, but Katz began by stating he watched the Nova game w/ State fans and that the fans don’t know what to expect from State each time out. Katz then asked how “challenging” this team has been this season. This set the tone for a fairly contentious interview.
Gottfried immediately stuck up for his team and said the entire process had been rewarding, watching them grow and turn into the team they are currently and that he couldn’t go along with that line of thinking. Katz then, I felt, intentionally antagonized Gottfried by framing his next question as “You’ve got top-2 line talent, so why hasn’t it always played out that way with consistency and why are they doing it know?”
I really credit Gottfried here for keeping his cool. The question could easily have been taken as insulting to both Gottfried and the team – and I felt the question was meant in that manner. Gottfried retorted with (paraphrasing all of this): “You know Andy you didn’t start out the season stating that we had top 2-line talent. We were picked 10th in the ACC. What has happened is that these guys have grown and gotten better as the season has progressed. It’s been great, etc.”.
Katz then wrapped up the interview and Gottfried responded with a fairly gruff ‘thank you’. I like Katz fine, but all-in-all I thought that was a shoddy, ambush style interview. It’s “funny” how media types just flip the script whenever a narrative changes or a new narrative appears.
Anyhow, the point is – this is a talent-laden team. While on one hand it’s fair to criticize certain aspects of the season and how some stuff played out, on the other hand there should be due credit given to the improvement of the team, individual players, and consistency. It’s fine to criticize Gottfied’s past results and actions, but it’s beyond disingenuous to fit and frame those narratives around a March run in the NCAA tournament. The results will always speak for themselves. Notice how the keyboard jockeys didn’t have much to say when State was doing “what it was supposed to”, but now that State has had a tiny amount of success they’re out in full force with the narrative pushing of “underachieve” and the surprise success despite Gottfried’s “incompetence”.
^Those type of statements come from people who have never played, never coached and in general have no idea what they’re talking about. It’s always a chicken-egg argument with no validity and no reasoning. Rather than focusing on why this season’s team was “inconsistent” and giving due criticism plus due credit where warranted, they ham-fist a storyline based on, at best, anecdotal evidence and narratives. That’s what the Goodman’s and Seth Davis-es of sports “journalism” do – push their drive-by opinion off as “fact”.
Hand-wringers will always hand-wring, and haters will always hate.
wufpup76KeymasterGood luck Herb.
wufpup76KeymasterThis is really cool … she’s a good sport and didn’t hide from all the attention.
Edit: there are actually some State fans in the crowd that help deliver a good laugh
wufpup76KeymasterACC to net over $28M off tourney
This is a more important record to shoot for.
More ammunition for Swofford to get the holy Cheats out of their holy mess.
😉
wufpup76KeymasterHey so IDK if I should start a new thread for this or what–hoping someone can help. (I rarely post on the internet, so idk the usual etiquette.)
I graduated from State in ’11, and am now in law school at Syracuse–literally across the street from the Dome. I am hoping to find out how to get a lead on a single ticket (maybe two tickets) in a State-fan section at the game on Friday. I’ve looked on stubhub, and seats seem generally reasonable, but I would rather be in a block of State fans than a red dot. (Though there is something to be said for being a red dot.) Is this possible? And, if so, are the prices not-outrageous? Any advice is greatly appreciated! Go state!
P.S. If anyone needs to piss before/after the game, I can swipe you into the law school.
Really not sure how the seating works, sorry. Maybe someone can chime in.
Have you tried calling the Carrier Dome box office to see if they have that type of info?
wufpup76KeymasterI’m sorry, I’ve listened to both the First Take and His and Hers podcasts from today and there was hardly a MENTION of NC State.
^Espn2’s morning shows are tabloid. They’re always going to sensationalize and focus on mostly hand-wringing, negative ‘talking points’. The only thing remotely redeemable about ‘First Take’ is the lovely Cari Champion. Straying a bit off topic here, but Espn made a wise decision when they split their programming between Espn and Espn2 and basically chopped EspnNews (which they should re-brand at some point). For a while, Espn couldn’t decide what to show where and in what direction to take everything. Every show, including SportsCenter, started to devolve into lowest common denominator clickbait crap. They were hemorrhaging viewers and receiving a ton of backlash.
Finally someone with a little reason and logic split the programming – Espn for main SportsCenter style programming and Espn2 for tabloid programs, with EspnNews being used as auxiliary programming and live sports coverage (ECU basketball was on EspnNews quite a bit this season – good for them. They’ve got to be happy about that). Now people who enjoy tabloid programming can watch it on one channel, and people who don’t enjoy it aren’t having it rammed down their throats on every channel they turn to. I can finally tolerate SportsCenter again in the mornings if I have it on in the background while I’m working. I don’t have to hear about Tim Tebow every 10 seconds nor do I have to listen to middle school level debates about who Lebron James included in his group photo on InstaGram.
^ Meh, don’t worry about it. We’ll be on the main frequency when we’re playing Duke in the Final Four.
^Unfortunately, Final Four is TBS only this season. No CBS coverage. I think this a mistake on CBS’ part, but Turner broadcasting probably forced the issue in whatever deal they made. Only the championship game will be on CBS.
wufpup76KeymasterThanks for the update.
wufpup76KeymasterBama to possibly make big pitch for Marshall
wufpup76KeymasterBut a favorable matchup is a favorable matchup. And basketball is very much a matchup-flavored sport. Pitino would rather be faving Nova, I assure you.
Agree.
wufpup76KeymasterWe’ve played 35 games so far, and I’ve probably been wrong something like 35 times. So I’m going with Louisville all the way, and you can thank me later.
🙂
It’s all about the good juju homey.
wufpup76Keymaster^I rather like that design.
wufpup76KeymasterWhat was the call in the second half of the Nova game where their big got fouled (not called) and then got the ball back, scored and then there was a foul called. I have watched that play over and over. He goes back up uncontested.
Yeah the call when Freeman blocks Pinkston’s shot and then it bounces off of Abu back to Pinkston was brutal. Fine, they got a fortunate bounce and Pinkston scored … but in a scene reminiscent of ’89 State-Georgetown, the ref at half court comes steaming in with a non-existent foul call. It never ceases to amaze me how one blows their whistle off of assuming what happened without actually seeing what happened. Just why? Insanity.
There was also a call in the UVa-Sparty game yesterday that was a call usually reserved for the Blues. Virginia was putting together a mini-rally and Atkins made a completely clean block on an MSU player and it was going to be a clear run-out for UVa. Before Atkins even blocked the ball, the ref on the baseline blew his whistle. Just amazing. It was an awful call, but the ref had to follow through with it after blowing his whistle from anticipating what would happen. My God, we better not get that guy this weekend. We block so many shots I can’t imagine how many of our guys would foul out off of clean plays.
Also, I think they’ve completed their adjustment from losing Jones.
If I’m being honest, Pitino’s adjustments get the nod over State’s ability to anticipate his adjustments and scheme counters.
…
If the staff and players have the same concerns, I like our chances. If they don’t, I don’t
^I agree. Even though it’s anti-Pitino, I can’t help but to think State will see some variant match-up zone or a half-court double on Barber. Barber basically won the game in Louisville … they will account for him with more than one wrinkle. Other guys are really going to have to step up. Outlet game is going to be a huge factor – there’s going to be more on Lacey’s shoulders this time around. As others have alluded to, we need to see a couple of 7-11 games out of Ralston this weekend. I also expect to see a continued surge of Dez Lee minutes. Stick him on Rozier and see how easy he penetrates then … I’m fine w/ Lacey/Ralston on Blackshear. Don’t fall victim to the pick-and-roll with Harrell.
If we can get and keep them in the half-court and shooting uncomfortable jumpers and then utilize release valves we might be ok.
Re: Bilas – I can’t blame him for picking Louisville … But if he just outright dismissed NC State then that’s disingenuous. And yep, Bilas loves some Bilas 🙂 . Imo, he doesn’t come across as smug, elitist, or condescending as he used too but he’s still an unrepentant know-it-all.
wufpup76Keymaster^It was funny as hell.
wufpup76Keymasterfollowed sfn for several years but 1st time poster
glad to have you … Go Pack … good juju
wufpup76KeymasterThe Obama nonsense didn’t even come up. Thank God. Time for that crap to be put to bed.
As the Cheats like to say, Moving Forward …
wufpup76KeymasterWho is almond joy and how did that name come about
There was a ‘discussion’ in one of the open threads about a nickname for T. Lacey. A few things were tossed about as suggestions, and Cowdog suggested ‘Almond Joy’ because sometimes he drives you (him) nuts (if you read this Cowdog please correct me if I’m wrong).
It kinda took off from there / stuck … I like it because you can also say ‘Almond Joy’s got nuts’, which he does with the clutch shots he hits. Almond Joy the candy bar is also sweet, and Lacey smiles like all the time … so it’s a nickname that works on many levels!
wufpup76KeymasterI’m thrilled that the talking heads are all talking about Pitino and Izzo. Absolutely thrilled.
