Syracuse made it in a couple of years ago with an RPI 70+ RPI. That I believe was the highest ever. This year, NC State was 64 and Arizona State was 66. Is that the second and third highest of all time? It’s hard to find research on that and thought VA Wolf might know. I remember we made it with a 63 one year but can’t remember higher.
WolfpackCoach17ParticipantHow is the ESPN RPI so far off from the live-rpi.com RPI. Right now, #91 vs #109. In years past they have always been very similar. Any changes in the formula that one of the two sites aren’t getting? realtimerpi also has us at #109, but that site is major pop ups. Just looked at CBSSPORTS rpi, and they have us at #109 as well. So ESPN is either off, or they know a secret that everyone else doesn’t.
WolfpackCoach17ParticipantI love your posts. Unfortunately, we have spent a little too much time on the NIT bubble over the years, so just for reference, it is much tighter than the old days. With only 32 teams, and generally 4-8 bids lost to automatic qualifiers (small conference regular season champions that did not win their conference tournament), the difference between sneaking into the NCAA and sneaking into the NIT is either 2 or 3 wins, and generally requires at least a top 90 RPI. So this team would need at least 17-14 (6-12) to get into the NIT, and that would be a last one in kind of situation. Just putting that out there as a reference. 18-13 would probably get you a top 16 seed for a home game. 19-12 would probably get you a #1 or #2 seed, or possibly get you in the NCAA tournament and avoid NIT altogether.
