I am all in for the 1 for 10 shooting night, as long as it is the smurfs. A win would still have us in position for a possible tourney bid. Just have to take it one game at a time, and get a nice winning streak going.

    Do what now?

I truly dont get where people are thinking Henderson is some sort of savior for the program or team. All the things that were coming out before he got hurt was that he was just a spot up jump shooter with shaky defense that will just play a role in the offense. Now he is all of a sudden some guy who is going to score 20 a night and excels at defense and drives the lane.

I believe he has us positioned pretty well for next year. But I thought that at this time last year. If, as has happened with Gott in the past, we lose a couple of guys (namely Abu) semi-unexpectedly, then it doesn’t look as good.

I think this is where the battle lines are being drawn. Granted both sides are probably biased in this but one side sees next year as a continuation of a dumpster fire while the others are clinging to hope. Like I said both sides probably are not seeing it clearly but alas that is where we are. If we are another bubble team and squeak in then of course he is not going anywhere. If we have a mirror season in 2016-17 then I think the flood gates open and it will be tough to defend Gott.

Of course best case is we finish top 4, get a 3 seed or something and we can move on down the road with everybody being happy.

Personally I think there just are too many question marks with next years team so I would say we are a bubble at best.

    Rick…

No… I was responding to some comments by multiple authors about stuff that happened years ago down in Alabama…

    —————————

    Final Note about “character”…

Every Team is a mirror image of it’s Coach…

    For Five or more years…

NCState Men’s Basketball is not and does not appear to be anyway close to “probabtion” for “bad behavior” by the NCAA or the SCAA.
NCState Men’s Basketball players or coaches had not been in the news or in court for their off=the=court activities.
NCState Men’s Basketball players’ as far as we can tell do not seem to be having difficulties with their academic workloads.

Seems like a bunch of pretty good “characters” to me….

    .

One caveat here, its not just something that happened at Bama, its going on now.

    … extending T57’s query…

    Sh^t happens… to everybody, everywhere… sooner or later…

Now some want to focus on why the Sh^t happened, or what it should have never happened, which is their unfortunate prerogative….
However, the greater question is certainly “What happens next… or How does one handle his Sh^t?”.

To that … there is no one on this Team — Staff or Player — who hasn’t doubled down, reached back, found something extra AND exhibited publically nothing less than a most positive and professional attitude and work ethic in the face of truly adverse and unforseen circumstances.

It seems to me, at the end of the day, on the top level, that’s what sports and “Coaching” is all about — character.

How can any of us “observers” be anything less than most proud of this Team?

I am not even sure which way to go with this one?

Should be a fun year. Finally got season tickets for the first time since I moved back. I loved watching baseball back when I was in school. Such a perfect event. Laid back and all.

Another thing I dont get is how in the hell does Maverick have a green light to shoot. Would any other coach in the country just like him jack up shots like he does? Kid may turn out good in a couple years but sheesh he is a liability at both ends.

The plan was to have Lacey, Washington, and Henderson in the lineup this year. All three are scorers and would have made a huge difference in many of our loses. But that plan was shot and there was no back up plan or an ability to absorb the loses…so we have what we have, one elite caliber player, and the rest, well you know the rest. However, there is no explanation for playing sorry defense, unless it is not an emphasis, and it doesn’t appear to be.

I get that was the plan and yeah with that lineup we would be better. But our frontcourt would still be in shambles and as you mention the defense would be exactly the same. I think folks are trying to look at this on a micro level about losing henderson, lacey etc but I believe its a fundamental problem in regards to the entire program. Its the scattershot approach that Gott seems to be using. Bennett has built something from the ground up and its paying dividends while Gott just seems like he is consistently scrambling. An insider on TOS says we probably will sign a grad transfer big man or 2. Too me that is not fixing the problem and that is why we are perpetually playing catch up.

I just wonder who the other mystery ma(e)n we are losing will be?

I hope it’s no one and you cry yourself to sleep at night.

History says there will be at least one. We can speculate. Too many 3’s next year. Mav or the Martins leaving? Anya just totally quitting the game would be something I can see. His heart is clearly not in it.

Yep BJD – just like Steph Curry. Sad the scouts get locked into “measurables” and not what is the “eye test”. If Cat is predicted to be a top pick there is not doubt he should test the waters. If he remains a second round or later might be wise to add another year of seasoning.

Not arguing against your point but we have seen this bias for decades. If nothing else think Spud Webb.

Its a moot point because someone will gamble on him in the first but another year at NCSU isnt going to do jack for him. He isnt getting bigger and his team this year was the perfect storm to showcase his ability.

Yes, and from what I get…the revised NOA will contain a bit more than what UNx expected.

The NCAA is going to punch them square in the mouth, but what was expected for Spring, will most likely come heading into the Fall semester.

That is simply unbelievable. If they would have just admitted wrong doing from the get go then 2 things would have happened. The ncaa would have swooped in and give them minor penalties and all of this stuff would stop coming out. But no they fought and denied so I think the big guns are going to drop on them. My UNC friends/family swear UNC is going to sue (for what they cannot tell me) if the NCAA obliterates them.

I dont know jack squat about the NBA but help me understand how Cat is not a lock for a top 10 pick. He is literally unguardable on the collegiate level.

I like the repurposing of Reynolds. No way it will ever be the home of men’s BB again. Better repurpose than take down for another parking lot.

For that kind of $ though? Granted Reynolds should have been demolished and rebuilt in the early 2000’s but I dont see the value of a straight remodel just to keep a “historic” building with zero ROI.

Just curious, has there been speculation about DY retiring when her contract expires, or has she said something allusive?

On Yow’s list of long-range plans is retirement. By 2019, she would have 25 years in the ACC as an AD and her career would span more than 40 years as college coach or administrator.

“I don’t have any intentions of going past (2019),” Yow said. “I just need to the do the best I can for N.C. State and hopefully set it up for the next person.”

    http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/college/acc/nc-state/article18772455.html

Mercifully I think she is done in 2019 at the very latest.

It’s the right time to move on Gott, but NC State won’t do it though. If they had the stones to do so, then the “patience” Christmas card would have been great foreshadowing. Instead, I’m guessing nothing will happen and it was as bad as it looks on the surface.

I dont care if you support all things NCSU and Yow, the Christmas card this year is nothing short of mind boggling. Its another bizarre move in a long line of them. WTF does having patience do with anything XMAS and to have the audacity to tell the alums that give money to stop being restless. Just another blunder.

Coaches with questionable moral compasses make questionable decisions. Pitino is an excellent example of this.

Couple of points here. I think its funny that (mainly) TOS is hammering on how sleazy Pitino is but totally refusing to even acknowledge our ol ball coach has a pretty shady not too distant history as well.

To the point on Pitino, there is no way on Gods green Earth anyone could convince me that he didnt know what was going on. Thats juvenile and naive to even consider he was in the dark. Not knowing is probably 10x worse than actually knowing because that would show a clear cut lack of control within the program. No way he didnt know.

She and DD are contracted until 2019 and got until 2020.
From my understanding her spending on non revenue sports limits our ability to pay any buyouts so I think it is safe to say we will have these three here for at least two more years. At this point all we can do is hope the two coaches figure out how to win a title. IMO Gott has shown what he is going to do. For some its great for some they want a chance to win a title.

I feel Yow has been way too free with unearned extensions and spent too much on nonrevenue sports.

I hear what you are saying but these contracts get bought out every year. I also hear what you are saying about not having the funds to even buy them out if we wanted but these things tend to have a way to work themselves out IMO. I think if the bottom falls out, and I think it very well may in 2016-17 in both sports, then whoever that makes the call will not have much of a choice. Has a school ever had to replace the AD, and both revenue coaches in the same year?

The basic question goes back to the heart of the Great Herb Debate. Some people are happy with not being a laughing stock. Some people want alot more.

The legitimate question should be…how does Debbie define success/failure.

She has said it numerous times and I have heard her say it in person. She wants a top 25 program and all that comes with it. In theory she is right. If you are a top 25 bball program you are probably contending for your conference title and getting a high NCAA seed. If you are atop fball program then are more than likely going to good/great bowls. So after 5 years in bball we are a loooonnnnngggg ways off to that goal

Gott has never won 4 ACC games in a row* so I doubt this is the team that he does it with.

****unless you count winning 3 of the last regular season and then one in the tourney

I too was glad to see Kirk play, should have been seen more long time ago. Did anymore hear Vitales dribble about how Cat would not be drafted or perhaps just a late 2nd round NBA pick? He suggested Cat stay in school another year. I can’t imagine Cat’s stock being any higher by staying. Vitale also said Brice Johnson was a better player than Cat who deserved ACC POY. Course we all know how much Dickie loves BLUE.

Honestly for the past 2 or so years I have muted both football and bball for the most part and put on a good album or whatever. Not that i think the announcers are against state just that they pretty much all suck. All of them. Blowhards. Its actually pretty refreshing to just hear music and watch the game. I am knowledgeable enough to follow the action and know whats going on without those tards telling me their opinion.

Just curious, is Terry Henderson ever gonna play this year? He didn’t break anything. Any info on this news?

    Probably not anything meaningful.

He didnt break anything but what he did was far worse. He tore ligaments. One poster on TOS said after a recent home game that Terry was still limping noticeably so who knows.

I would guess the next time we see him is next season. Doesnt make a whole lot of sense to trot him out in this trainwreck to get reinjured.

uhhhh, why MD took off? They left this crooked joke of a conference. Good for them.

Hell yeah good for them. That had the balls to exit stage left. Something we should have done with Vatech when we had the chance. State will never ever be proactive in anything. We wait until we hit rock bottom before a move is made. See Les, Ocain, Herb, TOB, Gott and the list goes on. Its not our nature for whatever reason.

We sure didn’t hesitate to toss V.
But yeah we don’t seem to have strategic leadership in regards to athletics.

True and I get your point but V didnt do himself favors by becoming the AD and trying to sustain his image. In hindsight we should have just demoted him from the AD position and gave him 2 years to get his stuff together. But the order came from the top as I understand it. The political pressure from the governor on down just got too overwhelming. I would love to read a book with an honest account of what actually happened. I have heard numerous times (no way of verifying ) that Dean Smith himself pulled strings to get V kicked out.

Since this is now a bitching thread I would like to hear how the experts at this site would evaluate the hiring of Yow. At the time I believe there was much support for this hire and many expressed that we made out better than the Terps. Hmmmm Terps get new AD,join the BIG,both Men and women BB teams in top 10,and FB recruiting in THE BIG better than our recruiting in the ACC.

Believe it or not there was a lot of anti-yow feelings the second she was hired for many reasons. A)many people wanted a clean break from anything NCSU related. Start anew essentially. Thats the same reason a lot of people were leery of hiring Purcell. Not sure I agree with it but those vibes were certainly there. B) She wasnt even on the list of the search committee that the school paid for. That is huge to me. C) Her reputation (right or wrong) preceded her and a lot of folks, myself included, didnt want to find out. D) Her rep for spending money that schools didnt have was an issue.

I think when its all said and done Yow is just going to be another failed AD at NCSU. We keep shooting ourselves in the foot. At the time I was incredibly adamant that Gary Stokan take the job because he is all business and that is what collegiate sports has become. Now that time is long gone.

But yeah as someone mentioned above, the results kindof speak for themselves

If anyone cares….in ’06-’07 Duke went 8-8 in conference. This might end up their worst year since then.

As another “old” Big Four guy — (e.g. the greatest Christmas BBall tourny ever…)

it’s also worth noting the Devils still have to play the Holes this month…
although they only play ONE TIME in Swoffy’s new and improved ACC….
which by all accounts is blaspheme…

    No lie

My 10 year old could come up with a better system for the ACC scheduling format. It aint hard swoffy
