The excuses never end………
wolfpack92owenParticipantYou have to go to The Tar Pit Forum on Inside Carolina to read stuff like this.
Do you think people give two rat behinds about the “culture” (whatever the hell you mean by that) or character building etc. Thats just a flimsy excuse for having a crap program. You may think that is all good but at some point he has to win. Its that simple. He has to win some games. I dont care what division we are in but he is getting paid to win. Figure it out, the last 2 coaches managed to beat both FSU and Clemson. These excuses are just tired and played out. This is the year, he has to win a game or 2 of significance or he is a dead man walking for the next AD and whatever excitement that is around the program goes down like the Hindenburg. He and Yow created this paper tiger of 8 wins and record breaking offensive stats while not even mentioning who it was against. Its obvious now what her motive was moving forward. At some point you have to quit blaming TOB (who beat #3FSU and won 7 games the fired year) and stand on the team you have built.
If we had just taken Clemson to the brink and won the division then you wouldnt be posting this stupid stuff about character building, Culture etc.
As someone pointed out TOB recruited the same type kid but that is apparently a different “culture” then what you are looking for. In college athletics wins are all that matters. Beating this “we do things the right way” (which is laughable at best) drum is the losers mentality.
And playing the “Hole Troll” angle is not a very becoming way to argue your point.
wolfpack92owenParticipantSo I look for what’s working and what’s possible. Doeren has altered the culture in the football program at NCSU. Check. He has coaches who care about the players as players and people. He is building character and creating an environment where young men can grow to be all they can be. We are gradually attracting both good athletes and good people. We aren’t winking at hazing and beating up walk-ons, etc.

wolfpack92owenParticipantHow were you on your prediction last season?
Actuallt Rick asked the question.
All predictions last year were made before Shad took the infamous Mo-ped ride and Dayes went out for the season. A lot of people forget about that and don’t like the question, “How would EweNC have done if Hood was lost for the season and Logan went down with a season ending injury?”
Injuries are a part of football, true, but Mo-peds shouldn’t be.
What games do you think we would have won with both of them in our lineup?
wolfpack92owenParticipantDD said at the atlantic beach caravan that after 2 years he still hasnt learned to check his ego at the door. He sounded incredibly frustrated at the situation
Yes, he did, publicly. But DD wasn’t talking to the folks at the atlantic beach caravan when he said it.
Is this some sort of riddle?
wolfpack92owenParticipantI think it might be more appropriate to revisit after he’s actually played a down or two. He is just a redshirt freshman going into his first season after all.
DD said at the atlantic beach caravan that after 2 years he still hasnt learned to check his ego at the door. He sounded incredibly frustrated at the situation
wolfpack92owenParticipantI think this is a pivotal year. Do I think coach D is a fool? No. He did see some weakness in the staff (or was helped to see) and adjusted. Were the right choices made? We will see. As to recruiting not natty caliber of course but seems better than under TOB. Time to show improvement in the win/loss – tough thing with the schedule this year but we simply have to see signs of improvement.
He was in fact at the spring caravans touting the recording breaking offensive records, hell he was just talking about it last week without addressing the elephant in the room. Now I like the hire of Eli but the fact that he hasnt even hinted as to why he kept our DC is a head scratcher. Our defense last year in critical situations screwed the pooch in each and every time. But I guess the heat was on to some degree to make a change and firing both OC and DC was too much of a system shock.
I honestly dont get the “give him time he is building something” argument. DD for the most part is recruiting below average, he hasnt shown the ability to out coach anyone at this point, and his teams dont really have any sort of identity. If he cannot pull a rabbit out of his hat this year then really whats the point?
Personally I think we are in the ultimate proverbial holding pattern as an athletic program. Yow is not leaving until 2019 and she isnt firing either coach under any circumstance. I imagine we crap the bed again in football and underachieve again in bball but excuses will come from the top and the cycle repeats itself. It really is a minor miracle our fans continue to buy season tickets for both sports. Almost like a crack addict knowing its totally bad for you but cannot resist either way.
wolfpack92owenParticipantHaving seen TA run roughshod over 1A teams, and only having seen Frazier in the Shrine Bowl, the speed and explosion thru the line looked very different.
I watched TA a ton in High School and it was crazy insane the things he did to those poor kids. One play against a team I cannot remember, TA takes a pitch speeds to the outside and his met by a small corner he unloads on the kid and knocks him about 3 yards downfield, he then did that classic spin right into a player coming to help and knocked him 3-4 yards back and TA pulls up as if he is looking for someone else to hit but then just jogs into the endzone.
wolfpack92owenParticipantGreat write up and I agree I think the ND game is ripe for us. A win there could easily turn this season into something are unaccustomed to.
Two things though.
1. I think the WandM probability is too high, 99.9% for a pretty decent “cupcake” type team. They return a above average senior qb from a good offensive team. One that could give us fits early on. Think we win but it may not be as easy as it seems.
2. Our QB situation now is giving me all sorts of nightmares. I cannot think of any reason to feel good about that position going into the first game without a starter named and with plans to play both players. Given A)one qb is in his 3rd year in the program and was a 4star and b)the other qb came with the new wonderkid OC and reportedly already knew the offense. Not sure how one could spin this as a positive
wolfpack92owenParticipantWhat team with a new OC and a new starting QB can expect to be a big winner? The holes of course. They have a new OC and new starting QB are picked by some on this board to be better than last year. But by some obscure logic the Pack is suspect with All American TE JaySam and a fleet of very good RBs back healthy. Our O-line is suspect with the addition of SR center Scelfo and new line coach who worked miracles at App State. Just saying… ?
Not to get too far into this slap fight but:
I find it incredibly concerning that Jalan didnt play much at all last year (pretty telling actually), hasnt outright won the job and made this his team. Something is really really off in regards to our QB’s. DD’s own words was this is an easier offense to learn. And the comment about Meyers playing another position is a big “WTF”.
The presser he gave the other day was also eye brow raising as they were bragging about the offense and how good it was the past 2 years without even acknowledging the elephant in the room.
As far as predictions I think its going to be a struggle to hit the 6 win mark. We do have a few great opportunities to steal a game or two.
06/08/2016 at 12:56 PM in reply to: Way Too Early Top 25 Shows State Football Will Be Challenged #104544wolfpack92owenParticipantI would like to see us win at least 2 of those. That would show a great deal of promise and optimism. Lose all 6 and I just dont know what to say.
wolfpack92owenParticipantNo. It is not. I wonder how coach k or coach self or a young Dean Smith or wooden would have answered the same question?
what was the question?
wolfpack92owenParticipantI guess there’s no chance we ever see Gregg Marshall here.
Only if his signing bonus is knee pads for when we play the Blues
Wha???????
Marshall famously fawned over Roy and K during his interview with DY. he “knew NC State’s place” relative to the others.
Assuming thats true (I always heard that was Turg) is that a legitimate reason not to hire one of the best coaches in the game right now?

wolfpack92owenParticipantAdd in ND with 9 and this years team may be better than last year but have a crappier record. At the Atlantic Beach caravan DD talked up Eli D a lot and said our offense is going to be a lot different. Hope he is right.
05/21/2016 at 9:11 PM in reply to: NC State Basketball Scholarship Distribution & Discussion #103815wolfpack92owenParticipantNone of the transfers have improved their position for the future or transferred and had great success. The guys who have transferred have all been guys who think they deserve to be stars but are simply not that good.
lol
wolfpack92owenParticipantJeremy – this guy is much more skilled than Bam and should be a better college player.
In terms of talent acquisition – again with that caveat of him being eligible – this gives all those necessary all of the necessary information to make a decision. If he can put together a great season – read the following:
1) top 4 ACC regular season finish
2) ACC tournament title
3) elite 8 or betterIf he can do one of those 3 – there is no way in the world to justify firing him for on the court results after next year.
Finishing in the top 4 ACC is the absolute baseline for next year. No excuses at this point.
wolfpack92owenParticipantI will admit that I didn’t really give a flying f-ck (and could see the silver lining in a loss) at the end of the Lowe and Amato eras. But those were uber extreme examples, when things were absolutely in flames (on and off the field/court).
MG has nowhere near approached that level of contempt earning.
yet…….
He under performs this year and the stuff really might hit the fanThats always the double edge sword of having a loaded team, the expectations get a little crazy. See year 2.
wolfpack92owenParticipantThe Pack are also doing a pre-season international trip like when they went to Spain in Warren’s freshman year. This will be a terrific opportunity for all the new pieces to get some work in together.
True but I dont think DSJ is going
wolfpack92owenParticipantI cannot imagine they will not give him eligibility. And yeah I imagine immediate playing time was a good selling point to the 7.
I don’t know how much credibility there is to the story, but I read his pro coach was upset about him leaving, and has claimed Omer was getting paid. Another story is the team opened up a bank account for him and put money in it, but Yurtseven never owned it or touched the money.
Whatever has gone on, I will breathe easier when he’s cleared.
[/quote]should be an easy thing to clear up then
wolfpack92owenParticipantThere is so much negativity in the discussion about the program that I feel like posting a best case scenario (that doesn’t involve firing Gott this offseason). Here it is:
1. Abu returns to play the 2016-17 season at State.
2. Anya returns to play the 2016-17 season at State.
3. 5 star C Omer Yurtseven commits to State and gets cleared by the NCAA to play the full season. (He visited over the weekend.)
4. Top 25 juco transfer SF Keanu Pinder commits to State. Late rotation player (i.e., minutes, but not too many).
5. 3 star PF Darius Hicks commits to State. (He is supposedly deciding Friday, and is supposedly down to State and Cincy.) Depth player, building for future, answering the call for more 3 star types.
6. A backup PG who can play backup minutes without disaster commits to State. (Perhaps KJ Smith, who visited today.)
7. Freeman redshirts.
8. Henderson is granted a 6th year (i.e., granted a medical redshirt for 2015-16).
8. DSJ and Yurtseven live up to the hype, and both are 2017 NBA lottery picks. This has a positive effect on future recruiting, and Gott lands an elite 2017 recruiting class, which makes up for losing DSJ, Yurtseven, Abu, and Anya.
9. Meanwhile, the rotation of DSJ, Dorn, Henderson, Rowan, Abu, Yurtseven, Anya, et al. stays healthy, and State finishes in the top 4 in the ACC and makes deep ACC and NCAA tourney runs.
10. Despite these things, Gott’s contract is not extended.
11. We have an elite recruiting class that contains a starting PG and two quality big mean, at least one of whom will start. That plus Henderson, Dorn, Rowan, Freeman, Pinder, Kirk, and Hicks for the 2017-18 season means the team is both talented and deep.
12. And it builds from there…OK, I realize that scenario has about the same odds of happening as me winning the lottery. But it is more fun to think about than how much fun Rick is at parties.
Or….
1. Abu doesnt return (which is likely from what I am hearing)
2. Anya doesnt return
3. Omer goes to Cuse, the negative recruiting is too much to overcome
4. Pinder goes elsewhere, the negative recruiting is too much to overcome
5. Sure, I will give you Hicks coming but he is just a body not even a role player
6. Pg, sure I am sure Gott can find somebody to back up DSJ but at what quality?
7. Freeman redshirts, I think this is a foregone conclusion at this point
8. Henderson aint happening
9. Pipe dreamNow which is more realistic yours or mine? I have said all along if Abu leaves Gott should be fired immediately. If Abu and Anya leave then I think 99.9% of the fanbase would be on board with gott (and yow) being shown the door.
After all of this I simply dont understand how Gott can get out of the hole he has dug for himself in regards to transfers and recruiting. The kids obviously know something is going on in the program, parents as well but the biggie would be rival coaches putting the screws in during the process.
wolfpack92owenParticipantUnconfirmed, but there’s a lot of chatter about the NCAA adding at least one more major infraction to the five already announced in the amended LOA.
For someone following this on the peripheral what exactly would this mean if true?
wolfpack92owenParticipantThe more I think and ponder about demoting Lutz, the more I am now beginning to question our overall direction. I gave the AD a mulligan for the obtuse and contorted path that let to Coach Gottfried. That worked out well for a while. BUT, now we begin to see unraveling of the program.
It has been a rudderless ship from the outset. The captain is a mess and the crew is abandoning ship. It is just a matter of time before we hit the iceberg. The only question is do we get in front of it. It appears we are not.
I literally just spent $60 to drive from New Bern to AB to the caravan. Probably really stupid to spend my money on that but they said Gott is going to be there so on some weird level on want to hear his rationale about the program and where we are headed. Probably a waste of money as he will do the proverbial coach speak but maybe he opens up a bit.
wolfpack92owenParticipantAlso to your “cleaning house top to bottom” comment. I have to think that more people may be open to this if the revenue sports continue to crap the bed the next two years. I could see a new AD followed by 2 new coaches in the 2018 time frame.
Please note I had some important qualifying words in there… those being: “at this juncture”
if the shakeup doesn’t work to get us on an upward trajectory going forward it’s completely reasonable to consider cleaning house
I should have worded it differently. I was agreeing with you for the most part about cleaning house now. I then gave a scenario (pretty likely IMO) where that cleaning house probably would be sought after by our alums.
wolfpack92owenParticipantwhat would you do with Lutz? Fire him?
Isnt that essentially what we did?
