^ no matter what you just said above if DD goes 3-5 next year in conference (as I suspect he will) he is going to get fired. Period.
wolfpack92owenParticipantMorgan Miller tweet
Arch’s wife isnt helping our collective heartburn over the situation. I expect a well measured and coherent response to her post from Wolfpack nation.https://mobile.twitter.com/BballWife4Life/status/833508256874065920/photo/1
I know these two things are not connected but I spoke with a guy that works in the WPC this weekend and he said the general tone about Miller coming was positive, much more so than the national pundits.
I think if the stars align and a couple things break our way we can hire him if we wanted with what we may potentially be offering.
wolfpack92owenParticipantGreywolf I get that you are passionate about DD but the reality, and it is the reality is that this is the year for DD. This is it. He simply must have a stellar season or he is done. All the goodwill, all the things you listed above only go so far when you are only winning 3 games in the ACC.
wolfpack92owenParticipantHe makes a great point in regards to athletic directors. Cannot argue with that one.
wolfpack92owenParticipantShe is as dumb as a stump if she doesnt think her retirement is going to be a factor.
wolfpack92owenParticipantAndy Katz of ESPN fame “interviewed” FIRED HC Mark Gottfried during the half of the Valo – Oakland Game…
Gee, Mark, you went to the NCAA 4 out of the past 5 years and also advanced to the Sweet 16 twice. You also recently beat ranked Duke at HOME. Why do you think you were fired?
I guess that AD Yow thought that our wins this year were not adequate and decided to go in a different direction. The league is much stronger. We have a young team and we had some tough losses.
We had a phenominal practice today…probably one of the best of the season. We will play on and see how it pans out….
Neither pointed out that it is almost statistically impossible for Coach Gottfried’s TWO final seasons to match what Sidney Lowe did in his final two seasons. Lowe was 37 out of 69. Gottfried will be pushing it go get to 32 out of 65…. Minor point of course.
All that was missing was…
Gee, Mark, that is really a bummer, but we are looking forward to working with you again and there are a lot of your fans that will be looking forward to getting up close and personal with you as you travel to the games…..Thanks for the interview…..did I ask the all the questions that you texted me?
The gamesmanship have begun….
This is precisely the reason you dont let him finish out the year coaching. Fire him and move on. Dont let him stick around to do this and let him form the argument of why he was fired.
Its also telling that in 2 interviews that Yow has given she has brought up a coach drinking and the search committee looking into a coachs background.
wolfpack92owenParticipantWhy not do this before the UNC game and leave the man a little dignity. Eff Yow
wolfpack92owenParticipantArch is a hot commodity and will command a premium, particularly if Ohio State is in play. The chance to get Arch more reasonably was last year, and that’s why we should have moved then.
Anyone who thinks we are getting Greg Marshall needs their head examined. The Koch Brothers pay him handsomely, could pay him more if they wanted, and he has a private jet to use at his discretion. The only reason that we could outbid them is if they decided that Marshall just wasn’t worth it. That should stop and give one pause in and of itself. I personally think there is a lot of “noise” that comes with Marshall. Great coach, but is he worth it? I am not sure.
Jesus dude Marshall is absolutely worth it. Not even a remote question. Whatever conference he is in he makes it his own personal playground. Dude can coach. He is a pipedream for sure but since he almost left for Bama a couple of years ago that tells me he may be getting sick of KS, sick of being a mid major, wants to feed his ego against a top conference. Probably all three. Pay him 4 million per and the return on investment would be insane.
Its a pipe dream but at least ask.
wolfpack92owenParticipant…so, this is really happening tonight? she is really gonna trot him out there.
In a slow motion train wreck sort of way its going to be entertaining as hell.
wolfpack92owenParticipantUnless they have someone in mind that is a shoe in for the right money this search will be tough. I agree, what we have offer the top tier coaches will be a tough sale without a crazy amount of cash. Great facilities, great conference, great tradition blah blah Charlie Brown. That sales pitch doesn’t work like it used to (or did it ever for the Wolfpack?) And we normally screw everything up from a coaching search perspective. Still a funky way to start with the current fired/not fired reporting.
I bet we end up with Keats
I just know he would come here, steep learning curve perhaps but good pedigree
wolfpack92owenParticipantMy understanding is also that it was Marshall. Turgeon was the guy DY thought wasn’t really gonna leave TAMU but was just after a pay raise (wrong).
Will never be known for certain. We do know that Marshall has a habit of not interviewing well.
Thats so dumb about not interviewing well. Look at his body of work. If she honestly didnt hire him because of an interview then she is dumber than I though
wolfpack92owenParticipantESPN now reporting:
NC State coach Mark Gottfried’s tenure in Raleigh is likely coming to an end following the season, unless the Wolfpack go on a run over the next few weeks and in the ACC tournament, sources told ESPN.
“He could be gone this week, if they get pounded by North Carolina tomorrow night,” one source close to the situation told ESPN on Tuesday night.
Gottfried, 53, was hired by athletic director Debbie Yow in 2011 and proceeded to go to the NCAA tournament in each of his first four seasons, including a pair of Sweet 16 appearances.
However, the Wolfpack were 16-17 last season and are 14-12 and 3-10 in ACC play this season, with a likely high lottery pick on the roster in Dennis Smith Jr.
Yow, according to several sources, has been unhappy with the lack of effort with the current team.
“They have more than enough talent to get to the NCAA tourney,” one ACC coach told ESPN. “They just don’t play hard at all.”
NC State spokesman Fred Demarest told ESPN that Gottfried remains the coach and that the focus of the team is on North Carolina. He also denied that the school has reached out to other candidates, as several reports have indicated.
If NC State does make a coaching move, it’s likely that Dayton coach and NC State alum Archie Miller would be high atop the list, although sources told ESPN that Miller is unlikely to take the job.
and Yow is still going to let him go out tonight, unreal
wolfpack92owenParticipantI think they are denying this report
Well, if you read between the lines, they’re not technically denying the report.
If he’s not going to be on the sidelines tomorrow we should find out today, and probably before 5pm. Choosing gameday against our biggest rival to announce would be unbelievably terrible.
Listening to our favorite, David Glenn, and he said his “sources” have told him a slightly different version of Mark Armgstrong’s report.
such as?
wolfpack92owenParticipanti cant believe there hasnt been an announcement that he is not coaching tomorrow. Rick, do you honestly believe Yow would let him coach tomorrow (against UNC of all people? Roy must be licking his chops).
I think they are denying this report. So yeah, it appears they are doubling down on stupid.
Again I know she is headstrong and doesnt like to be showed up, but surely for the love of God she wouldnt let her ego get in the way of this, I simply refuse to believe that.
My 11 year old, when told of the news last night, even said gott has coached his last game for us.
wolfpack92owenParticipantI’m halfway expecting a press conference to be scheduled today saying Gott has “resigned” effective immediately. I don’t see how he can go out there and coach anymore this season and have to answer all the questions surrounding his job.
I think thats a foregone conclusion at this point. I dont think Yow has the balls to trot him out there tomorrow night. Thats not going to do anyone good at this juncture.
She might be stupid enough to do this.
I cannot stand this lady and I dont think she is the greatest thing since sliced bread like a lot of people but I feel deep down she is smart enough to not let this happen. She has to be or someone close to her has to get in her ear. From every angle this would go down as a historic cluster f***.
My guess is there is an announcement this afternoon. She is probably meeting with him right now.

wolfpack92owenParticipantI don’t buy that multiple unconfirmed sources relayed this info to the reporter. Just don’t buy it. No way an Ath Dept. can be this bad.
Trust me, our AD is that bad.
What people are just not understanding here is that Armstrong isnt going to come out with this unless he is dead sure. Dead sure. He said he had multiple sources and they knew he was going public with it. My guess is its one of the coaches and someone within the AD. No way in hades its not. He wouldnt take that risk.
wolfpack92owenParticipantboom
lords know I love a good coaching search
wolfpack92owenParticipant^ I see your point I really do, but I think at this juncture of our program I would say for the bulk of us its “MILLER OR BUST”.
If we hire someone in the same mold as gott and then arch goes to say OSU and does awesome things we would never recover from that. Never.
I say to Deb or whoever is making the call get Arch is what most certainly we want. If he fails he fails but at least we gave him a try,
Personally I think he is a slam dunk. His teams play crazy tight defense and that is a hallmark staple of any good/great program. Shaka to your point is/was a more run and shoot fast based style. My feeble basketball brain tells me you can run down and tire out your VCU rivals but in a p5 conference the athletes are too good for that.
wolfpack92owenParticipantMe, wrong?
About what?
I figure he was always prowling, with his history there never was any reason to think State had hired the pope.
Morals ain’t part of the issue either. Just look over in Orange County and that will tell you what morals count for Rick.
State will keep him, State will always be true to its nature and that means losing, sucking and making bad choices.
McCallum
I think State keeps him as well, Deb has already primed the pump by hyping up the sweet 16’s etc. However if what I heard last night is true then he is a dead man walking. Pretty much in line with what is posted above. Since Deb has already addressed this issue at least once and the couple it with the on court performance then she is not going to have a choice in the matter. Its like I told my guy last night, its almost like Gott is trying to get fired.
Which would sortof make sense on a weird level.
wolfpack92owenParticipantFor the record, I am QUITE supportive when it is merited, and I don’t think I am in any way unfair about how I judge coaching performance.
Just be sure I understand you: are you saying that you are QUITE supportive when a coach wins 5 or more of his conference games but not supportive when he wins less than that? (I picked 5 conference games because that seems to be the demand.)
you are one odd bird
wolfpack92owenParticipantHe is not the coach for us.
I agree to an extent.
I know some posters have said this but its true. If we make a change (still not convinced Deb has the balls) and we cannot hire Archie Miller who is an alum, with his wife who is an alum, whose parents live a couple of hours from Raleigh and we basically would double his salary then we need to purge the entire athletic dept. If it has gotten so bad perception wise, operationally, or whatever then we need, no have to make massive changes. In no bizarro world should we not be able to hire Archie Miller.
Give him a 7-10 year deal, give him input on the next AD and load it with incentives.
wolfpack92owenParticipantI wonder if greywolf still thinks we are just being negative here?
wolfpack92owenParticipantBTW did you see where our defense was second in the nation in first down yards per game given up?
How are we ranked on fourth down plays run into the wind in away games played against Coastal division teams?
lol
wolfpack92owenParticipantI know you like DD but you have to admit he hasnt built any excited around the program.
No buzz on this site but plenty of buzz on another, much bigger site. The quality and depth of the DL, the development, depth and quality of coaching on the OL, emerging WR core, the small number of seniors from the starting line up graduating, etc., has many people excited about 2017. Coaches are leaving for promotion to coordinators of other programs or moving up to coach in the NFL. Openings are being filled by good, young coaches — and very quickly too. Perhaps we don’t see Doeren as a good HC but he is apparently seen that way by the coaching fraternity.
There is a lot of buzz on blogs by professionals and on radio such as Steve Logan’s show.
So, you are right there is no buzz about the football program but that is only true on this site. This site thrives on pessimism, complaints and put downs.
Lets wait and see how the ticket sales do before we anoint DD as the next Bill Walsh.
No matter how you try and build him up in the post above his best season to date in conference is 3-5. TOB had a better record and was fired for it. So yeah I would think the masses can see through this charade. He gets next year for sure but I would bet dollars to donuts only a handful of folks really think he can break through and get 8 regular season wins.
