Way out of character? No, hold the excuses, that’s his character shining through, and very brightly I might add. That’s who he is. Good kid? No, he’s a playground street brawler-baller, and there is no room in college sports for “good kids” like him… May UConn welcome the jerk with open arms…They deserve this punk…Yeah, I know, Chris Paul is a good kid too… Look, the “out of character” excuse is played out….I don’t know anyone who buys it in situations like this..If it was truly out of character, it would not have happened..John Hinkley acted out of character too, so I’m told..

WolfanaticParticipantIt looks like Louisiana Tech’s Michael White could well be the new Gator coach. Meeting with Foley today.
WolfanaticParticipant^ The drafting of Winston by the Bucs makes me feel like the Howard Pelakudis of Bucs fans. I’m the victim.
WolfanaticParticipantYes Wufpacker, It was a Billy B. reference. So many great lines in that movie…
WolfanaticParticipantSo far, 313 rookie undrafted free agents have been signed, and not one wolf amongst them.

WolfanaticParticipant^ I’m a die hard Bucs fan that is very close to washing my hands and my feet of them after taking the fool with the first pick. So many Bucs shirts to burn and so little time. The crab legs photo was a real nice start to this moronic side show.
^ I hope your Panthers bludgeon him with little to no mercy. Merci, beaucoup.
WolfanaticParticipantWolfanaticParticipantGreat job?
You betcha! For the life of me I can’t understand what some Gott detractors were expecting after two decades of irrelevancy. Four trips to the big Dance, two trips to the S16 and no trips to the NIT. If you were expecting a couple of ACC Championships and two NCAA Championships to boot, then you might want to re-evaluate your expectations. Gott, in my opinion, has the program on the right track to become the kind of program that we all wish it to become. It takes time.
Back in 1980 Duke hired Army’s coach who was fresh off a 9-17 season, his second losing season in five at Army. His five year record at Army was a pedestrian 73-59 (.553). His first four years at Duke were even less impressive, as his overall record was 62-57 (.521), and in the conference he was an abysmal 20-36 (.357). It wasn’t until his fourth season that he took Duke to the Big Dance where they were bounced in the round of 32. In the ’82-’83 season Duke was 10-17 and 4-10. The following season ended up 11-17 and 3-11 in the conference. It took Coach Rat time to build his program. I’m sure Duke and its fan base looks back and counts its lucky stars that they didn’t give up on him during the years of rough sledding. I’m sure that Dr. Phil might want to ask Coach Rat’s early detractors, “What were you thinking?” This is not to say that Gott is the next Coach K. Only time will tell how he compares with the creme de la creme of coaches. Again, it’s just my opinion, but I believe Coach Gottfried deserves time and appreciation for the GREAT job he has done in resurrecting State’s insipid basketball program, and returning it to relevancy. As far as I’m concerned, he can sleep on all the airport floors he wants as long as we keep improving and dancing in March.
WolfanaticParticipantAn interesting read….Thanks for putting that up..
WolfanaticParticipant^ Indeed, it is a matter of concern, but there is time to go, and I definitely don’t see this as evidence that Gott has peaked. You say that recruiting is trending down, and with zero recruits so far that is hard to argue, but Rivals rated last year’s class #22 down from #15 the year before. Abu (45), Caleb Martin (#60), and Cody Martin (#81) was an excellent class. No, we didn’t get three Big Macs as we did in 2012, but what did that get us outside of T.J.Warren? 2013’s class was Barber (#15), Anya (#58), Kyle Washington (#93) and Desmond Lee (Juco 3 star)- also not a bad class. Between the ’13-’14 classes (7 players) some State fans are predicting that 3 of them (Anya, Barber & Abu) will be turning pro after next season. If that’s true, then I’d say Gott has done a good job of recruiting since he came to State, Just because he has no 5 stars lined up for next season, at this point, does not mean the sky is falling. Geez, and I thought I was a doom and gloomer.
WolfanaticParticipantRick, just so I’m clear…. You said that I answered my own question. I actually asked 3 questions. Which one did I answer, or am I to assume you meant that because Gott has no recruits lined up for next year that that is “evidence” that he has peaked? Really?
WolfanaticParticipantbackthebackagain wrote:
In your opinion, lets say Gott gets in the tourney next year, do you think he draws interest from another program?
Personally I think we have seen the peak with Gott and if the recruiting doesnt pick up then we are dead in the water.
As for your question, I’m certain that there are over 100 schools that would like to have Gott as their coach. The question is how many head coaching jobs are considered more prestigious than an ACC head coaching job that might have their feelers out. I can name a few that would be considered more prestigious from an historical standpoint, but not too many. But, consider that if UCLA were to can Alford, would you be surprised if they wanted to talk to Gott? I wouldn’t. Given his capabilities and his history at UCLA, I think he might be on their short list after going five for five. What programs would Gott covet that would be more high profile, and might be considering a coaching change? Not many. He’s not going to make a lateral move.
As for whether or not Gott has peaked, I find your statement amusing. Look, I get it that you don’t like Gott, but for Chrissakes, how can you say he has peaked? I’m not sure Gott knows what his peak is. Are you clairvoyant? How can you back that statement up? On what evidence? As for recruiting, I’m not concerned too much at this point. Come November there will be a few new quality players on State’s roster that will see quality playing time. Just because a guy “Duffners” and sleeps on airport floors doesn’t mean he has peaked, and that he’s damaged goods. For crying out loud, we got a horse in the race and you want to be a “don’t bettor”. Please, don’t ever stand next to me at a craps table.
One last point: I’ve never heard Gott address the question, but would love to ask him how much working as a college basketball analyst at ESPN for two years helped him to prepare for this job, and to be a better coach over all. All the time he spent with other high profile coaches, picking their brains, and watching how they ran their programs on an up close basis seems to have helped him become successful in a more challenging conference than from whence he came. Additionally, I’d rather have a coach who runs a clean program and is highly competitive than one who wins a bit more while directing his players towards AFAM classes. I’ll take integrity any day, and I’ll keep betting on Gott to “make his number”. You, mi amigo, keep betting on him to “seven out” and we’ll see how the dice roll. Good luck.
WolfanaticParticipantI have steered clear of the ongoing questioning of Gott’s capabilities, and the job he has done up to this point, but something inside me says that had we beaten Louisville and moved on to the Elite Eight and lost there, we would still be having the same conversation about Gott. College basketball has changed drastically since State won a National Championship. Hell, our conference has changed drastically since then. Gott is four for four getting us to the dance and moving to the S16 twice. Shoot, in the 21 years before Gott we went to the big dance a mere six times. None of the three coaches prior to Gott had a winning conference record in their tenures, and the conference is arguably much tougher and more demanding since 2013. Gott is 92-52 (.643) overall and 39-31 (.557) in conference. We were 125-209 in the conference under Robinson, Sendek and Lowe. Personally, I look at Mark Gottfried as a stunning success so far. For him to be successful with four very diverse teams says that the man can coach, and coach very well, thank you. Counting his 3 years at Murray State and 11 years at Alabama, Gott has taken a team to the big dance 11 times in 18 years and is 371-206 (.643) overall. That doesn’t suck. Yeah I know, we all want to win conference and National Championships, but our expectations should be tempered with reality. Only one of 16 wins the ACC Championship and only one of 68 wins the National Championship. The odds are what they are. With the right mix of players those goals are not out of the question with Gott steering the ship, and I wont be surprised when that mix of players is on deck and more goals are met.
WolfanaticParticipantA 33.7% increase in annual compensation is pretty strong, but Dr. Yow has done an admirable job in my estimation, and is well deserving. Why, why Hillary Clinton would have to schedule at least three or four speaking engagements per year to rake in that kind of money. Congrats to AD Yow.
WolfanaticParticipantCoddling, Alpha, coddling…It’s the same in English and French, or even Belarusian…coddling..Tommy John pitched for 18 years after he underwent his namesake surgery. In those years, he went 182-147..He routinely threw 200 innings plus, hurling an amazing 276.1 innings in 1979, just four years after he got the bionic arm, then he followed that up in 1980 with a paltry 265.1 IP. The problem is that the coddling starts way, way, way too young..That’s just my take.
WolfanaticParticipantDuke lands PG Derryck Thornton..Jones out, Thornton in..problem solved..
WolfanaticParticipantWolfanaticParticipant“Another thing, as we develop a history of not giving players PT, it will make recruits think twice.”
Well, someone is going to get playing time, and that should make recruits think twice also. In other words, they should be thinking that if I go in there and bust my butt and make the most of my opportunities then playing time will take care of itself. Likewise, if I don’t do those things then I probably will be riding the pine. We had 6 players average over 19 mins PT this year, and three more average double figures. It seems to me that under Gott, those that are deserving of more PT get it, those that are not, don’t.
WolfanaticParticipantI’m old and my memory ain’t what it used to be, but who has transferred out of State since Gott arrived, that has gone on to be an impact player or all conference 1st or 2nd team at another D1 school?
WolfanaticParticipantVaWolf82, Thanks for the informative and moving Ted video. There is hope. “Remember Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.” ~Andy Dufresne…..Thanks very much…Laugh, think, and cry everyday…
WolfanaticParticipantSpeaking of Coach Rat “hanging” it up, it seems our PC-minded friends at Rat U. aren’t so PC-minded after all. They’ve got roaches in their house too.
