^except for that last double by McClain. We need solid innings from orwig if and when play resumes. Short leash on brown when there isn’t much in the pen

we didnt tough bilous’ slider or change all night. All fastballs. Too impatient with him. We need to get to them soon because Morrison is tough, and we’ll get him soon enough

Dumbness gimmick on coastal’ part. That’s some little league bs.

Gonna take more than 3-4 to win this one. Bilous is using our aggression to his advantage. Hard sliders out of the zone and the change. He’s a very similar situation to Rodon. Would’ve likely been a top 3 round pick if not for the injury.

We’ll need to score a bunch and stay in winners bracket. Throw Wilder in game 1, save Brown. We may get out the regional but the lack of starting pitching and bullpen depth hurts. Even with a healthy Williamson, it was a problem. No Williamson, big trouble. Somebody needs to step up.

The only thing that could get me excited about this rendition of pack basketball is if the players have nicknames or denomominational affiliations on their jerseys. Can you imagine, “smith feeds the Muslim brotherhood, who kicks out to ghost face killa.”

Jeebus folks, it wasn’t Marshall who bowed to the blues. That was Turgeon. Get it straight. Marshall ultimately turned us down because: 1. He’s a family guy, likes Wichita state, and the underdog role; and 2. He was our second choice behind Shaka smart who he’d just lost to in a very tough and wrongly seeded first round matchup. Marshall wanted the job here when he was at Winthrop. He wanted it again but we went for the shiny new face.

Nice. I’ve been down on him nice to hear Avent compliment his bunting and then finally get another bomb. Been a while

What’s the word on Williamson? I understand he was a no-go for ACC tournament regardless of how many we play. Will he be ready for the regional?

So we went from looking like a turd to a pile of gold plated turd? Or did we strike real gold? I’m thinking Pyrite.

Thank you, Cowdog. Selectively attack. You don’t have to whale away every time it’s close. Ain’t no Vlad Guerroros in this bunch

He got off to a slower start this year, and I have no idea how much the grind of catching duties takes, or if he’s injured or just pressing. Nice rip first time up tonight

^I agree. Just a little more plate discipline, patience, especially the first time through the order, would really benefit some of the guys imo. The situational awareness has to be taught at this level, and it starts with the skip.

For those of us who never caught, or made the college level transition to catcher, what’s up with Kizner? Swing looks totally different, even from last year when the transition took place. He used to be really short and quick to the ball. From my point-of-view, now his swing really long. Completely different and he looks uncomfortable. Was this a deliberate change?

I don’t care about transfers. If that was the only issue, it wouldn’t be a problem. Having a season like last year wasn’t due to transfers. You can make a case that Gott has won the transfer battle by upgrading, but you can certainly argue the opposite. We haven’t always been able to recruit and fill out rosters when there have been transfers, leaving inadequate depth, regardless of the quality. Hence last year. 1 eligible uninjured scholarship guard on the roster. One.

We should be better this year for the simple reason that we have more guards. Better on offense, better on defense. I don’t expect anything more than a mid-ACC regular season finish, some wins against quality opponents, some letdowns and losses to mediocre opponents, and a dangerous but underseeded team due to the mediocre season.

Had to give up my tix to this one unfortunately but watched it on the tres. I don’t think scouting of pitchers is a big problem, not as this level. No doubt it could help, but plate discipline imo is the bigger issue with this bunch. It’s always a problem as far as I can tell. i don’t know hitting coaches there but it seems constant since Avent’s been the skip. Few teams have I seen who come out hacking at so many first pitches. Last night is case in point. Later in the game, the counts went deeper, they saw more pitches, we squared up balls. More chances for pitcher to make mistakes, better timing, the list goes on and on. Rain, rain, rain. Situational hitting is an area where we struggle. We got key two out hits but it’s the approach that’s important. Deatherage last night, late in game, bunts for a hit with 2 down with the lead and momentum. Just another example. I don’t care how well you run or if the infield is all playing on the grass. Swing the bat in that situation.

You’d never hear me yelling to take the bat out of a kid’s hands, but I think this talented group of youngsters, most of whom have no problem catching up with the 90 mph fastball, would benefit by seeing a few more pitches, especially early in the game. Against better pitching, you’ve got to strike a balance between seeing more and not falling into a pitchers count. It doesn’t have to be the same approach for all players, but some of our guys shouldn’t have the green light every time they step in the box. Like to see a little more rotation into the DH slot.

I like deatherage. Coached against his high school a few times. They play some good ball in his neck of the woods.

Hell, I’d have probably let the 3 hole swing in that situation. But he strikes out a fair bit. I do like the lineup direction, if you can call it direction. I spot id like to change up but if he’s gonna tinker with the card every game, he’s done much worse this year

Sounds like it. Yard work day so I missed all but bottom of 9. Lemme guess, we swung away and had unproductive outs to squander the leadoff double in the 8th. Amma I wrong?

Didn’t fincher set a single season or career record for being hit by pitches? He who crowds plate need wear much body armor.

D1baseball.com is solid for tracking games. It’s a little delayed.

Sometimes you need the skip to make some good moves and help you win a game when the ball ain’t finding the holes. Tied 1-1, Bottom of 8, speed on first and nobody down, what do we do? We swing away. No runner in motion, no steal, no bunt. Then after a fly out, we run on what looked to be a delayed steal (and possibly a bad call) and get thrown out. 9 out of 10 amateur coaches bunt and get the runner in scoring position with a sure two chances because they half a brain.

Question: if you’re in a sudden death game, who the heck is your 8 in the field and what is your batting order? If you can answer that question, then try sticking with those cards for more than one game.

I needed a sweep this weekend. Had to put down my 14 year old dog yesterday.

I’m less optimistic. To me, it seems as if we’re blaming our woes on recruiting, as in, we haven’t recruited good enough players. I think that’s the attitude from the top. So I don’t see it as a significant change in strategy. Maybe these new folks are better evaluators, not just recruiters. I see these as connected but also unique facets of the job.

I think the recruiting philosophy cannot be so imbalanced as to lean overly heavy on recruiting 4-5 star players. I think a roster needs to be complimented by role players, developmental players, and a few stars, or potential stars. The game planning and style of play needs to play to those strengths. I don’t see us doing that. And I don’t see a real change in that direction.
