^Hire coaches with established relationships or roots in your state or region. You need some salesman who can sell mama or daddy or Jimmy to wear the red and white.

Every year, nick saban hosts a group of high school coaches on a fishing and hunting trip in the offseason. I know a few of the attendees, some of the best coaches-active and retired-in Nc and Sc. We aren’t getting enough of their players. And when The SEC and pac-10 and other ACC schools (including the one down the road) are getting more cookies from the pantry than you, you got a problem. We need tastier cookies.

When you’re building or rebuilding, you better be able to either out recruit or identify overlooked diamonds, develop players quickly, or outcoach–or a combo of all of the above in this landscape. I like DD. I think we do show incremental improvement (and that’s not a jab). As foose and many others have said, this may be Dd’s best team and still have a losing record.

That doesn’t cut it. It may not be fair. it’s the way it is. We’re not winning enough recruiting wars in NC or outside the state. We’ve not out coached anybody to the point of wins.

Let me elaborate on defensive scheme. I should’ve said style or philosophy, not scheme. nothing wrong with the 4-2-5. Ours is just too vanilla. And lacking in speed. Success breeds success. On the field and reeling in recruits. style influences both.

dd and staff need to do more on the field and recruiting, particularly in NC. Macallum is right. live on 74 and hit a few select schools.

Talent level doesn’t pass the eye test in several areas. Incremental improvement isn’t enough in this day and age. You have to have positive results in the win column.

Imo, defense is the biggest issue. speed lacking in back 7. Scheme lacking. Looks very Big 10ish on defense.

Having seen TA run roughshod over 1A teams, and only having seen Frazier in the Shrine Bowl, the speed and explosion thru the line looked very different.

^Completely agree with rye. Roundabouts are wonderful if drivers know how to use them, they’re paired appropriately with lights and merging traffic (walkers, cyclers, and vehicles). I don’t recall how long ago, but Hillsborough Street had roundabouts decades ago, so this wasn’t a completely novel idea. I don’t know if the current locations completely replicated the old roundabouts, but I’ve seen images of the older roundabouts. The biggest issue imo is the frequency of lights in close proximity to roundabouts. These bog down traffic. Traffic has to constantly flow. This from a non-engineer, but one who’s driven plenty of roundabouts stateside and abroad.

Enfranchise criminals who’ve done their time. Income and/or property requirements have no place in the discussion of voting rights. Period. That was settled many years ago.

With that said, voting is a privilege. Too many with no skin in the game. If you really think, however, that those with no skin in the game are really shifting the election curve and determining outcomes, I don’t buy it. Show me some to back that up. It’s like arguing social welfare programs drive the economy down the tank. Most of these folks don’t vote. Retirees, the exception.

I’m all for a military service, or public service (domestic or foreign) requirement, which could be deferred depending on education, etc. Don’t fulfill that requirement, don’t get the privilege of voting.

I think McCrory wins again in spite of HB2 over Cooper in a recount. I think Ross pulls off the upset on a last minute shot.

Wouldn’t the market have forced a correction if the Charlotte ordinance hurt individuals, families, businesses?

If consumers boycotted said businesses who didn’t provide safe accommodations, don’t you think those businesses would adapt? Why on earth is anyone not living in Charlotte threatened by an ordinance there?

Dumb and Dumber: Charlotte Council and NC State Legislature.

First, the Charlotte ordinance was poorly written. No doubt about it. But the response in the legislature was not only idiotic, it was illegal and irresponsible. The responsible thing should’ve been for the legislature to ignore it. That’s right. Ignore it. The ordinance would’ve eventually been challenged if there was a problem and corrected in the courts and by the council, without state legislative intervention. But this is really about fear and offending sensibilities. It has nothing to do with protecting children or wives. That’s a masquerade, and if you believe that facade, I’ve got a pile of poop to sell you.

Certain municipal privileges have to be conferred by the state, and the state does indeed have an obligation to intervene in certain cases. The bathroom portion of the law wasn’t one of those instances. But our supposed Conservative legislature has made a habit of stepping into county and municipal matters with regularity in the last few years, all the while ranting against “Big Guvment.” I can give you long list.

I consider myself a moderate. Vote for Dems and Reps and the occasional third party candidate. One team doesn’t have all the answers. I’ll give credit where credit is due to our current legislature, but his bill was crap. It’s an embarrassment.

^You better believe it. I’ve enjoyed watching Gilmore coach. That team can really scratch out runs when they aren’t pounding it. Rarely do they fail to put the ball in play and move runners, and he’s aggressive. Not going to lose lagging puts for sure. Hope they pound Zona tonight.

Cd, In your day, did y’all travel south in March on spring break to play down south or did y’all just throw on the sleeves and play in the cold? When I was coaching, we hosted a few high schools from PA and Ny who needed some sun in March.

I agree cd. I watch a lot more acc and sec baseball but my impression is that the leagues, as good as they are, are just a little too hyped. Conference strength may be better but the top pac 12 and the Fullertons and Rices and Dallas Baptists would fair well in either conference.

to me, the sec has been a power league for a while, and the acc has drifted in that direction. It’s the long ball and the power pitcher. Plenty of finesse teams and players who aren’t overpowering but are fundamentally superior. It’s like putting the burger boy Dunking and dribbling machines against a group of solid 3-4 year players. show me a d1 starter who can’t catch up to the 90 mph fastball.

Thinking back to early season comments after the BC series loss. BC was definitely a worthy foe. acc and sec baseball overrated. D1 baseball carries on the baseball America tradition. pac 12 and west coast teams, plus southwestern clubs underrated.

Shocked Louisville goes down. Thought they were a lock for Omaha. I really hope Miami gets sent packing. That joker gets one in the rib cage or worse if I’m on the bump.

My pop knew him well. As a boy, we lived in Fayetteville and my dad and Chris’s dad were friends, and I remember meeting him. Didn’t know he was drafted that many times

Close to where cd predicted he’d sign. Will be an interesting decision. I didn’t look at their other picks, and I don’t know what kind of demands they have, but I’m Not sure he can really improve on that significantly. I’m guessing he goes.

^I’m not really exaggerating to make a point. When you win, it masks some of the deficiencies. My general critique of Avent as a manager (and this is strictly fromm the pov of an observer who has very little inside scoop) is that there’s no real baseball philosophy at work. This leads to the ever constant knee-jerk decision making, the willie-nillie bench calls, mound visits, and pointless tirades, not to mention the constant lineup or batting order shuffling for what appears to be no good reason.

On the one hand, I like that Avent plays hunches. But when you always appear to pluck a decision out of your rear, it catches up to you. I think some of the best college managers play the percentages, but they also have a real feel for their players, team, and situations, and know from experience when to deviate from the odds play. Ultimately, I think that’s what separates Avent from being good to great. I think the kids like Avent. He appears to be a “player’s coach.” That aint’t always a recipe for greatness.

I wouldn’t can him, and I rarely see a game where there’s at least a handful of bench calls or mound visits and decisions that piss me off. I’m come to anticipate them and am no longer surprised by some of the moves. He’s to be credited for luring some really strong talent. There were years when I coached and was more in tune with nc high school baseball when I didn’t think he and his staff effectively scouted nc talent. I still think that’s the case. But I’m impressed with what he’s assembled from nc recently. How well we pitch and catch next year will determine our success. We’ll be fine in the field and at the plate.

^I witnessed some Palmeiro’s frustration the past two seasons. Occasionally, you need the skip to help you win a few in the close ones. The musical chair lineups and pitching changes, plus the game management, cost us a handful of games this year.

I’d have liked to have seen Gilbert today if he had two outs in him, but I expected Braband. Gilbert got the win both times out against Coastal this year. Give him the ball.

Tip a the cap to the boys. Defense was outstanding and pitching stepped up regardless of outcome. Losing Williamson really hurt our chances. Had a feeling we’d need 6 or 7 and that liberal use of the pen early and in the mid-innings of this one might bite us. Too many walks, hit batters. Some of that may have been rain induced with in the 9th last night, which sucks even more. But as Wuf alluded to in his preview, Coastal ain’t no slouch. We got out of some major jams where they could’ve put up big runs. We weren’t able to capitalize in a few of those situations either. Tough one to swallow.

Braband. Same as last night. Can’t reenter someone who’s been used up in this game just because it’s another day. Could possibly throw the rubber arm Gilbert if he has anything left in the tank and we need a lefty. Otherwise, Braband’s to save or lose.
