Saying the searches were bungled–as they were–is far different than saying we’re viewed in a negative light or that the job isn’t desirable. Isn’t desirable by who? For what reason? Multiple components go into a decision like that. Pay and contract, relocation of families, chance to compete for national championship. Because Smart turned us down, the job isn’t desirable or we’re viewed in a negative light. That’s bunk. Coaches were chomping at the bit for that job. Yow swung and missed on choice 1 (Smart). Choice 2 (Marshall) felt miffed because he should’ve been choice 1. Choice 3 (Turgeon) was too reverent of Roy and K. And as far as we know, there were others who didn’t particularly want to work for Yow. That’s far, far, different than saying our basketball program isn’t a desirable job. The backup plan was a solid coach, probably better than at least 1, maybe 2 of our top 3. THe Lowe debacle has nothing to do with desirability of the job. It had everything to do with incompetence of Fowler. Shawn Miller and others were begging for those opportunities.

^Jeebus folks…the basketball program and job is not viewed in a negative light. That’s ridiculous. Fowler bungled searches monumentally. Yow went after Smart and his wife didn’t want to move. He took a few years before going to Austin. Marshall has wanted the job twice–I repeat–two times, but he was miffed this last time that we offered Smart first (who had just beaten him in the NCAA tournament in a 5 v. 12 matchup). This was bad mojo on the part of Yow and any others involved in the search. Marshall has since beaten Smart head up several times. No way he comes here now. Should’ve hired him when he was at Winthrop.

Personally I think the expectation that Brissett would somehow help carry us to a higher level were a little misguided. We finished last season beating cupcakes and a mediocre UNC team and bowl team. We did it by running the football. On offense, Thornton’s loss was the biggest blow.

Defensively, without looking at the numbers, we may have been better this year. But that’s not saying much. The improvement on both sides of the ball can’t be so incremental that it’s not enough to win games. That reminds me of “day-tight compartments” and “chopping wood.”

I think philosophy on both sides of the ball is still a problem. What is it? Are we a team that spreads to run? spreads to throw? spreads and wants balance? Balance is overrated. Do what you do well, and keep doing it. Defensive philosophy just doesn’t play well for recruiting. It’s boring. We’re not Alabama. Please show me some creativity and adaptability going forward.

In gottfrieds case, I think the past 2-3 coaches and their sluggish starts color judgment.dont confuse maximizing potential and establishing a foundation with core principles with the results of past seasons with core contributing players which he largely inherited. I’m not for canning him. But let’s be truthful, he inherited talented players with solid role players that had underachieved and been unprepared. He improved performance but Imo he also underperformed after year 1. Regular season results and play matter.

Wasn’t the knock on brisset at fl that he held the ball too long, didn’t have good field vision, and made poor decisions, which led to turnovers? Well, he cut down on the turnovers but the other characteristics seemed only slightly improved. Is the concern about qb improvement from this year or next?

Canada won’t have a problem landing on his feet. Hope this one doesn’t come back to bite us. He did mystify me with the play calls on more than a few occasions. To me, this spells the beginning of the end of dd unless he brings in some A+ recruiters.

I’ve always been confident that Gott’s past squads would make the tournament. Not this year. OOC schedule hurt us, and ACC is relatively weak from the middle down this year. I don’t think our RPI can rise enough, and we don’t have enough wins in us during league play. We’re bad. Firm believer his teams have underachieved during the regular season every year given the talent. WE’re not capable of dancing this year. Fanbase will get more and more divided as season wears on. Sorry.

Talking to high school coaches I know that routinely send players to Power 5 teams, they like Doeren. I don’t know about their impression of the OC or DC and other assistants, but I’ll ask.

I’ve seen enough from Canada to stick with him. I do think he occasionally gets away from what works, and goes a little too Tecmo Bowl for my taste. Too much horizontal running and passing. I’m a north-south guy. The side to side junk only works if you can smash and go vertical, or have superior speed and big receivers who block well. Without those elements, you’re not going to be able to effectively stretch teams horizontally. With that said, I do think the loss of Thornton hurt us, far more than losing Dayes, and we desperately need more talent at the receiver position. Not getting the ball to Samuels more is/was inexcusable, particularly after injuries. Hand it to him.

Haven’t ever seen anything from Huxtable that I like. Too many issues on that side. We chase too much and play too soft. It’s not a recipe for luring recruits or success against the spread. Need more creativity and aggression on that side. I’d go young and creative, take a risk.

When you aren’t fundamentally sound, your shot selection sucks, you don’t defend well, you better be able to score. Now that gott has a full roster of his recruits, we are struggling. With Henderson, maybe we have 1-2 more wins but I’m not convinced of that.

We’re sitting in the 90s in adjusted defensive efficiency per Kenpom. We’re in the 60s in offensive efficiency. And our competition has been bad to mediocre. Doesn’t look good for this team. Both the offensive and defensive numbers are bad for gott. They’re reminiscent of his bad bama teams.

The wolf images are shockingly bad. Given that we have a school of design and deep roots in textiles, you’d think we’d insist on something a little more sophisticated with some edge. I would not be caught dead in the shoes or gloves. I don’t even think snoop or whoever the kids listen to these days would wear that crap

Go with a checkered hand towel-red and white, black and red. I don’t think the solids work with this uni. I dig the helmet but the wolf is too busy for my taste. I’ve got a friend in atl whose wolf designs crush any logo we have. Check out some nice work at

2 points: Missouri is terrible. No wins over top-150 rpi programs. Nice to win on the road and win with ease but I doubt we’ll look back on this as a quality win. Not knocking schedule, gott does a good job with it.

Cat needs to continue to take more threes. Throughout his career, he’s simply taken too few. Look at his percentages. He’s a capable shooter from behind the arc. It helps open up the drive for him and outs incredible pressure on defenses. I’ve always thought cat was too unselfish. Shot selection occasionally has been a challenge for him but he is the best option and he should be getting about 20 shots per game.

This is GOTT ball. Your head will explode if you expect significant changes. For those who think he hasn’t peaked, I applaud your optimism. I wish I hadn’t followed SEC basketball years ago. As DSD points out above, roster management and bench utilization are weaknesses. Always have been, always will be. Recruiting isn’t just about getting the best players. It’s also about having enough depth to weather injuries and transfers. Defense, not going to be a strength of this staff. Lutz’s teams weren’t defensive juggernauts, and Gott’s have never been either. The teaching is missing.

To criticize Gott isn’t to demand his head or even say he’s a bad coach. To say that’s he’s a bubble coach, in some places, would even be a compliment. He’s a good coach. His teams are capable of winning any given night. But they’re also capable of losing to inferior opponents. They why’s are obvious. I’ll repeat it time and time again, his first team was his best. He will never have a better team at NC State. Bank on it.

I’ll add that NC High School football has definitely been on the rise, but if you look at the number of D-1 players from the state per capita, or NFL players, it can be misleading.

High School football in NC is okay. There are pockets of the state where the ball played is really good. But as a whole, it isn’t a great state for the level of teaching/coaching and football competition from the youth level on up. Youth and middle school programs generally suck. High School ball really depends on where you live. High School coaches, particularly the good ones, develop relationships with college coaches. They hunt, fish, attend camps, etc together. They may say they don’t try to influence a kid’s decision, and a lot of them don’t, but they will tell a kid what they think his best interest is. And that often doesn’t lead to a NC school.

^ I stand by my statement. Didn’t say he didn’t land some great NC kids. To clarify, the net outcome of his time here was alienation of many high school coaches and programs.

Amato recruited well but not particularly well in NC. He landed Mario Williams and Tank Tyler but his recruits in-state weren’t phenomenal. He upgraded speed by hitting Florida. Helped that Joe Pate and staff landed a few NFL picks from Alabama. More problematic was that Amato managed to alienate and insult a number of NC High School coaches and programs.

His tenure was followed up by arguably the worst recruiting staff in NC State’s last 20-30 years. O’Brien and co just didn’t work hard enough here or elsewhere.

DD has done pretty good in-state until this year. If he wants to continue that progress, he has to win on the field now. The next two years are pivotal. I wouldn’t measure success in-state by looking at the top 10 players. Lawrence wasn’t only a top 10 player in-instate, but a top 10 player in the country supposedly. Sure, it would be nice to land a few of those, but classes vary in depth and position from year to year, as do team’s needs. We could definitely use help at some of the positions above, but some aren’t priorities for this year’s class either. IMO, if you expand the list to the top 25-50 players, we should be getting at a minimum of 10% given the number of schools in state. Anything less, I think, doesn’t bode well.

Still think Clemson is the best team in the country. Disagree about how poorly they’ve played. Always get the impression that they can mix in Watson in the run game when it’s a tight one, and that puts them over the edge. Bama and msu have what it takes to beat them-stout against the run and power run games. In an offensive shootout, I take Clemson over Oklahoma. Saban and dantonio get the edge as coaches.

Msu replaces Iowa. No other change in top 4.

Heard interesting stat. Clemson has the most touchdowns from outside red zone in ncaa. Unc has given up least number. Unc solid against big play, and I think they’ll get the offense going in second half. Still get the feeling Clemson can run Watson whenever they want and get big yards. Tigers win but holes keep it close. And if they don’t, that punter better just enter witnes protection

I also wouldn’t be surprised if there wasn’t serious interest by usc or the other big openings and the fedora camp spun this to at least get a raise. But the floor for their punishment is still pretty jaw dropping. Why knowingly sign on for that?

And I’ll add that what frustrates me most about Gottfried is that he doesn’t play to what he openly admits are his strengths and preferences. His teams generally are among the mores efficient on offense in the conference and NCAA. What does that mean? It means you need more possessions so you can exploit that advantage. How do you get more possessions? You either play better defense, or you speed up the game, try to play faster. He does neither.

I suppose you could make an argument that the offense is generally efficient because they do play methodically. And if they were to speed up, the offense would suffer. I don’t buy it. I think his teams have gone farther astray each season from the UCLA high post. They waste a lot dilly dallying around and put little pressure on defenses off the dribble. And they typically seem uncomfortable against zones.

^rye, I tried to answer that question in the recruiting thread. No built in advantages sustain you. Recruiting and winning feed off one another. His recruiting at State has trended downward. It’s not horrible but it’s not excellent either. He’s been able to offset some transfers, even upgrade a few, with incoming players, but I’m not sure I’d say his record in this department is a net positive. He could round out a nice class to go with Dennis Smith, Jr., but I think some of that depends on this season. And that’s not encouraging to me. With a coaching change comes excitement and program rejuvenation. That’s when the major culture change and momentum starts, but it has to be sustained with winning, player development, etc..If not, the recruiting levels off. In Gott’s case, if the recruiting levels off, I don’t think he’s good enough relative to his peers to win big. He needs top recruits. But the shine starts to wear off after 4-5 years. All his players now. Not someone elses. I’ve always thought that he had a talented bunch in Year 1, and a hungry bunch–kids who were highly recruited and talented, along with some role players who worked their tails off and were hungry. That’s his best defensive club. Coming down the home stretch of the ACC and the NCAA, they flat got after it. Even Calvin. Not since have we seen a team play as hard as that team did for the last 10-12 games. That’s telling.
