Before the UNC investigation began, but not long before it was reported, I dated a young lass who was employed by the UNC Athletics dept. Good lass. Not a UNC homer, which automatically put her on the outside looking in, even as an employee of the department. There were subtle hints of some of what’s surfaced. She was a critic then and now stands justified. This is just my way of giving a little shout out to her.

^There’s a limit to what they can drag out with the public record requests. I’ve given a few folks some advice on this end. FOIA doesn’t apply to UNC. State Public Records Law does. As long as the media and/or public is focused with their requests, it will come out. There’s no doubt the media will acquire the amended notice of allegations, with redactions, and do so very quickly. The tricky part comes from the clues in the NOA. That will lead to new information. If the requests are focused and not overly broad, then they, too, will be filled within a reasonable amount of time. If the media and public cast too big a net in their requests, the process can and will drag out.

I’m with Foose. I distinctly remember not only seeing it but also sitting around a lunch table the next day back at school getting razzed by childhood UNC and WFU fans, and laughing about it as a youngster. I don’t remember the game. Explaining to the internet generation that the absence of video or news on the interweb doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist is futile. My line of work requires a bit more creativity in research, but my bet, it’s out there on a reel or cassette somewhere.

    Any news on Mclain’s injury?

How many lineups has ea trotted out? The damn batting order isn’t the same one game to the next.

If the situation was as simple as just, say, a few folks testing the waters early for some money, or a few players opting to go for playing time elsewhere, then it really wouldn’t be a problem. Transfers + early departures + inability to anticipate said transfers + inability to recruit and retain role players + willingness to utilize full allotment of scholarships and space said scholarships properly = big problem. And that doesn’t even get into the game coaching. It’s just not a recipe for sustained success. He can beat anyone on any given night, but his odds of laying plenty of turds are fairly high. The consistency is there. It’s just not excellence.

Gott’s style of play isn’t conducive to playing a deep bench and retaining quality depth in this day and age. He could adapt by either playing faster, or changing his recruiting strategy, or both. He does neither.

Not surprised. its only addition by subtraction if he can bring in complementary pieces and win. Show me. I’m not a believer and haven’t been since year 2

The bar has at least been raised. I recall when an ncaa tournament birth was cause for elation.

Hit that juco circuit and sign at least one role player or project with upside to strengthen the roster. The whole I-don’t-want-to-waste-scholarships-on-inferior-talent is a lazy pile of crap

I expect to see us hovering on the bubble next year barring any unexpected defections. With cat, we could be more dangerous.

I’m with rye. Year 2 there were plenty of warning signs. Roster management was a problem that year. i don’t see a coach who’s evolved or improved from his time at bama. There’s an eye test element for me. I learned years ago that there’s playing hard, and there’s getting after it. We don’t get after it. We don’t attack on offense or on defense. When I look at coaches I want, I see schemes and personnel who are relentless. We’ve had some players who embody that, but we don’t as a team, and that starts at the top

Even in a down year, Gott’s team was above average in offensive efficiency. This is a known attribute. His teams are always pretty good on that end. The problem is that he doesn’t appear to acknowledge his weaknesses and try to offset them by using different schemes or systems or teaching and/or recruiting to said changes.

I’m fine with not wanting to play Bennett ball, but there are other ways to play defense that can be effective. He does none. Speeding up the pace of play could arguably adversely impact scoring in the half court, but I’m not convinced. If you’re good at offensive execution, you should still be good at offensive execution with more possessions.

On the defensive end, it would really benefit him by recruiting a bench and utilizing it when he has one. Throw in some full, half, or quarter court press, or trap, and/or a mix of the above, not just when you’re in desperation mode, but regularly. We’re not only bad on defense; we generate very few turnovers or easy baskets. Speed up the game. It should help lure and keep more players, if you can show that they’ll get to play, and there’s no doubt that it would benefit us on offense. Can’t hurt on defense.

Tough matchup for Wichita st after already playing two. Dug themselves too big of a hole in first ten minutes. Bad day shooting the 3 ball was bad news for them all year

^to smarts credit, he had to adapt to the roster that Barnes put together. He’ll be fine at Texas, but I agree, relying on full court pressure is tricky

^Wuf, I think you were right that Zona was underseeded, but more importantly, Wichita State was also underseeded. Losing in the MVC tourney probably cost them a few spots, but even with that loss, they simply weren’t an 11 based on the eye test. Most of the early losses came without their starting PG. My bracket looks good. I have the Shocks taking on KU to go to the Final 4! KU advancing

Shocks take dominate Zone and had an off shooting night from 3. Won’t be surprised if they get to the Elite 8. They may lose to the Canes, but I could see them facing off against KU, and wouldn’t Kansas fans just love it

There was never the slightest chance Wichita State wasn’t getting an at-large if they didn’t win the Missouri Valley tournament. They racked up 4-5 losses early in the year against quality competition, including several NCAA tournament teams, when their PG and reigning MVC conference POY played hurt, or didn’t play altogether. Take away close losses and they were essentially a 3 loss team in a pretty good league. They’re not as good as the teams with Cleanthony Early from a few years ago, but they’re a top 25 club

As for Kenpom, as I understand it, it is not intended to be a predictive ranking. The ranking is intended to rate what the team would do against an average opponent.

I’m never shocked by avent’s moves anymore, but to his defense, he has more pieces to play with in the field and at the plate. I’ve always thought batting orders were screwy. I’ve only seen a few games this year but I like the potential of the order. Nice balance of speed, contact hitters, and some pop. If he plays it right

Wuf, I didn’t see today’s game, so I’m curious how the bottom of 9 played out. Must not have put in play. Hard not to push at least one across in that scenario.

My impression watching bc was that the aren’t as bad as years past, and we’re also not a top 15-20 team yet. In years past, I called it the baseball America effect, where acc and southeastern teams were overrated. I think baseball America has us about right. D1baseball.com is generous with their ranking

I think there’s still a wuss factor involved for the baby blue. I don’t think they’re tough enough to withstand getting punched in the mouth s few times, which inevitably happens come tourney time. Uva is tough but that offense still isn’t good enough to deal the knockout blow
