Better article (better context for financial numbers) on finances from USA Today.

Well the big question is whether or not the domers opt for a better geographical and financial fit by going to the big 10.

True, but not possible for a while (2025?) because of the contract they signed with the ACC.

As expected, ND denies any interest in joining the ACC for football.

    http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/college/ct-notre-dame-acc-football-rumors-20170517-story.html

That article also supports my conclusion in the original post that ND’s NBC deal no longer puts the Irish ahead of other schools:

…The program maintains its partial football independence thanks to the television deal it has with NBC, which runs through 2025 and pays the school $15 million annually.

But here’s the thing: Notre Dame would make more money annually as a full-fledged ACC football member, and it would make significantly more money as a full football member once ESPN gets the ACC Network off the ground in 2019…

The Chicago Tribune article then manages to combine delusion along with a few useful facts:

but what happens if — sometime between now and 2025 — an undefeated or one-loss Notre Dame team is passed over for a College Football Playoff berth simply because it doesn’t play in a conference championship game?

It’s not impossible that we could end up with four undefeated conference champs along with ND….but the odds are so low that the possibility is not worth discussing.

A one-loss ND team would then have their strength of schedule ranked versus the other one-loss teams. Whether that evaluation would be rigged either for or against ND is impossible to predict. But it seems like the voting being rigged against ND is low enough that their administration is probably not worried at all.

As with most things, it comes back to the money. The difference is that ND gets to decide how much money is enough.

    2016 (actual)

    SEC: $40.5 million
    Big Ten: $34.8 million
    Pac-12: $28.7 million
    Big 12: $28.45 million
(The ACC has not reported FY16.)

Timely thread since the ACC released its tax records showing that the ACC revenue went down versus 2015 and is in last place among the five power conferences:

The 14 full-time member schools received an average of $26.3 million. Notre Dame, a member in all sports but football, received $4.25 million.

    http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/19420865/acc-revenue-slightly-373-million

The espn article ends with the ACC’s excuses/dreams:

In acknowledging that gap during ACC spring meetings Thursday, Swofford said, “That’s why we’re doing the channel,” referencing the forthcoming linear ACC Network, set to launch in 2019. “We fully expect a gap with particularly the Big Ten and SEC here for a couple of years, but that’s the very reason we’ve signed to do what we’re doing. We fully expect that gap will narrow considerably when we get the channel up and running.”

Yeah I know the “Laceys making $100000 now” posts are going to come rolling in but the take home from that and the longevity still doesnt make it worth it in my opinion.

If someone is willing to pay him 6 fiugres now, then I don’t see how it couldn’t be worth it. He can always go back and get a degree if that is something he wants and is able to accomplish. Take the money now, because everyone is only one knee injury away from being a spectator.

My occurrences of “looking out of the windshield” are attempts to see where we are going, not predicting where we are going.

Sorry, but I don’t see how you can claim to know where we are going and that your rosy view is something other than a prediction. Doesn’t matter I guess, since we’ll see what we’ll see soon enough.

This is what I see looking out of the windshield. Looking in the rear view mirror I still see the past which must improve.

Cute analogy, but it falls apart upon closer examination. Before nearly every FB and BB season, there are optimistic projections made that soon wither once the season starts. I may be forgetting something, but it seems like the only time a State team has exceeded expectations in the Internet era is when there are literally no expectations. (Not that having no expectations is a good thing.)

So what you see as a windshield is just another optimistic projection for me. I hope yours turns out better than most, but I wouldn’t bet any money on it.

I’m not at all worried about Keatts leaving. When’s the last NC State football, men’s basketball, baseball or women’s basketball coach who left for greener pastures? It’s been over 20 years.

Bo Rein for LSU (who unfortunately didn’t live long enough to actually coach there). To the best of my knowledge, Dick Sheridan and Jimmy V were the last two coaches that were even approached by another school.

Keatts leaving for another job is way down the list of things that I’m going to even think about.

Let’s play at least three seasons that way before we discuss this anymore.

Now that’s funny right there. I don’t care who you are; that’s funny.

If you’re happy with success in only the non-revenue sports, then great.
If you’re happy with fund raising and capital improvements, then great.
If you’re happy with preseason projections rather than actual accomplishments, then great. (Though after this current dumpster-fire BB season, I don’t understand why any State fan would attach any value to preseason projections.)

I didn’t say she should be fired. But the only thing that she has done for the revenue sports is to remove coaches that weren’t performing. That’s good, but not enough. Thus I don’t understand the claim that “she’s looking better and better”.

Why? Because this BB coaching search wasn’t as grossly incompetent as her last?

    In Defense of Keatts’ Defense

Not much of a defense…mostly just an attempt to get everyone to ignore UNCW’s defensive stats.

Note that there was no discussion of UNCW’s defense in comparison to other teams from the same conference. If UNCW’s defense was near the top of their conference but sucked on a national basis, then there would be adequate reason to suggest that overall talent explains why UNCW defense had a poor national ranking. The absence of such of an argument makes me wonder if it was missed or if such an argument would just add more fuel to the fire that they were trying to put out.

    EDIT
If you read the article by PackMentality linked in the “In Defense” entry, you can find some actual statistical analysis of UNCW’s defense and places it in the context of the CAA. My recommendation is to skip the “In Defense” puff piece and read Pack Mentality’s article.

I think the takeaway here is that we have taken a chance on a coach with 3-years of NCAA coaching experience in a small conference. As much as you may like him, you have to admit this is a hire based more on potential than track record. We should realize that it is going to take some time to get things right. There may be reason to think he will have a top-25 offense next year. He has the track record. There is very little reason to think he will have a top-50 defense in the next 3 years. I think we need to be ok with that.

    http://www.backingthepack.com/2017/3/21/15013504/kevin-keatts-defensive-record-as-head-coach

I’m not going to be ok until I see positive results show up in the W/L column. But if we don’t see good results in the W/L record, then it’s pretty obvious where to look for the whys.

Great coach but still a major risk at that price tag.

I agree but the recruiting rankings don’t really prove anything because you’re talking about Wichita St…..WICHITA STATE – Land of the Scary Wheat.

All we really know about Marshall (or any other mid/low major coach) is the relative scale you can get by their performance within his conference and that conference’s overall ranking. (Gonzaga being an obvious exception based on their OOC schedule and performance over multiple years.)

MVC (Wichita St) – 12th in conference RPI
    A-10 (Dayton) – 8
    Colonial (UNC-W) – 11

    http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/bracketology/conference

I would love to hear Marshall’s press conferences if he was State’s coach…but not enough to pony up what it would take to get him.

but I think for whatever reason that job was toxic the last two times around.

Damn. Stretching the same conversation into so many threads makes it difficult to find the message you want to respond to if you wait a little while. Ending mini-rant and moving on….

In an e-mail string, Jeff pointed out that you can track the toxic atmosphere back to some of the nonsense that came out of Fowler’s mouth. Hard conference, hard to compete against the blues, etc. Throw in the crap written by the Troll Trio (Parrish, Doyel, Goodman) and you get a lot of bad press. Since the average “journalist” is lazy, it becomes too easy to pick up someone else’s thoughts and rearrange/embellish them.

There is also DY’s claim that Gary Williams actively worked to slander her. I don’t have any info one way or the other, but there is no reason to think that he would give DY a good reference.

Did some realize that all of that was BS?…absolutely.
Did the BS convince some that State was a toxic, career threatening job?….probably.
Do some still have that opinion?…probably.
How many?….no clue. But anyone that has a look at who contacted the search committee with interest in State and the specific responses from any coach that State contacted and those people should have a pretty good idea of what mid-major coaches think of State’s job.

I might as well say it, I do not see Miller as a “great” coach. At Dayton he’s been IMO not much more than a “place holder” — no damage but no real forward movement to where he can be called “great”.

We have stretched the same conversation into multiple threads, which makes it hard to keep who said what straight. But I think that we agree on a lot of general things, but our differences start to creep in when we get down to specific evaluations/conclusions.

I doubt that many would claim that either Miller or Keatts is a great coach today. Up until this point, both have had to work with the limitations that their mid/low major school places on them. The open question is how good either would be on the main stage with a P-5 school. (Side note, I have the same question about Marshall…in other words, I wouldn’t pay $4M+ for him.)

The difference is that Archie has been very successful in a better conference than UNC-W plays in. While you can’t guarantee the results of either coach, I would feel more comfortable with Archie. But as my favorite example Pete Gillen shows, some just can’t get it done at the next level.

There is no doubt the job is not a toxic as it was the last 2 coaching searches.

I’ve been thinking about this but with little/no data haven’t reached any conclusions. Is the job less toxic or did State just aim lower this time? Either explanation works.

If you want to know how State’s job is viewed, it would be interesting to see who contacted the search firm looking for a step up. That list would go a long way in answering how State’s job is viewed by mid-major coaches.

How the heck do you have all that data you quote at hand? I’m impressed. How do you do dat? ?

I’m an argumentative old fart who has watched ACC basketball since the early 70’s and gotten into a lot of internet arguments/discussions dating back to the Great Herb Debate. So I’ve learned a few things over the years.

But the Pete Gillen example comes from living ~equi-distant to UVA and VT. When Guillen was hired to replace Jeff Jones, it looked like a great hire…but only on paper. By the time Pete was let go, one of the local sports radio hosts came up with the line that Gillen had succeeded in one thing….Making the Jeff Jones years look good.

PS – Xavier’s current coach (Chris Mack) is sitting at 186 wins at X. Someone needs to hire him away this off-season or my trivia question will have to be reworded somehow.

IOW NC State needs more than a good coach to climb back to the top.

I disagree…unless by “more than good” you mean “great”. State has the facilities that many claim are needed to attract talent and the finances to pay a competitive salary (maybe not Top10, but damned competitive). The one thing missing for decades has been a great coach.

I changed the title…but the comment applies to almost every coach that is hired by an ACC school.

My favorite trivia question: With Skip Prosser, Thad Matta, and Sean Miller all getting their start at Xavier, who has the record for most wins in Xavier men’s basketball history?

    Answer: Pete Gillen

From 1985 to 1994, Gillen compiled a 202–75 record, including the program’s first five wins in the NCAA Tournament. The Musketeers advanced to the NCAA Tournament in six of Gillen’s nine years at the helm. In 1990, Xavier beat Kansas State and future Big East colleagues Georgetown to advance to the program’s first Sweet Sixteen.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xavier_Musketeers_men%27s_basketball#Pete_Gillen_era

PS – Bob Staak preceded Gillen at Xavier. (If you don’t how Staak relates to ACC basketball, you’re just too young.)

Conclusion: Wins in the minor leagues doesn’t necessarily mean anything when you move up to the Bigs.
