if there is any way we can get Greg Marshall, get him.
There were rumors floating that he shit the bed during his interview with DY last time. If there is any truth in those rumors, there may not be any interest on either end.
VaWolf82KeymasterPitt is ass-ugly, especially of late.
Lost to FSU. Struggled mightily against VT and ND. They’re not exactly hitting on all 8 cylinders.
VaWolf82KeymasterI think Gott’s S16 run and recruiting (for the most part) have helped with the perception of NC State. I think we’re way more likely to get a serious look now that we got at the end of the Lowe era.
Doubtful, but maybe.
Don’t forget that DY will have to overcome the perceptions of her distributed by GW. She will also have to fight against cbssports.com as Doyell, Goodman, Parish, and Davis run their “unreasonable State fans” articles again.
VaWolf82Keymastera sputtering 2013-14
Calling a season headed for a 4-5 seed “sputtering” is an extremely high standard. 😉
The pressure to print “something” leads to a lot of nonsense being printed in the sports section. Pile that pressure on the mentally challenged and the trash piles up much faster than the content worth reading. I frequently go to yahoo sports. I rarely read Forde’s stuff.
VaWolf82KeymasterFor the record.. neither Sloan nor Valvano “built a program from scratch”
MG didn’t start from scratch either.
Did Clempson win an ACC basketball championship… I must have missed that…
Clemson being far way from the Triangle proves that distance is no advantage.
EDIT
Bottom line – I don’t believe in blaming some one else for “my” problems. It doesn’t wash in politics nor in sports.VaWolf82Keymasteroach-ing v. Coach-ability => chicken v. egg ??
In any one year, you could argue that it is impossible to tell.
Over time….the only common denominator stands out.VaWolf82KeymasterBut to say stuff like the Coaches don’t emphasize, don’t teach, don’t care about defense, unless you’ve been to a couple practices…. may well be just a little myopic…
This is not his first year coaching. We don’t need to watch practice to judge his effectiveness by what we see on the court year after year.
VaWolf82KeymasterGott must produce next year. This is now two years in a row that he hasn’t.
If you’re implying that Yow will take action next year, then I’m not buying it. (Short of a dead cheerleader showing up in his car.) I doubt that she’s looking forward to another BB coaching search.
VaWolf82KeymasterYou don’t just wake up one morning and suddenly find high IQ BB players on your team. Sound basketball players are created, not just discovered. Even solid high school players have a lot more to learn after they get to the ACC.
VaWolf82KeymasterNice opening to an important question… Wufpack!
Lesson #1…. Geography matters….
Which is to say simply… the farther you are from the intersection of Hwy 15/501 and I-40… the easier the job of building a championship ACC basketball program will be.
Norm Sloan, Jim Valvano, and Clemson all prove that this is horribly wrong. If you’re not getting the results you want, then there is no reason to look anywhere other than the head coach’s office.
How long do you give a coach? There is no one answer that fits every situation.
VaWolf82KeymasterSince we aren’t playing ND, I will just assume that “Irish Classic” means there will be a bunch of drinking and fighting.
I knew that there was a reason we kept you around.
VaWolf82KeymasterNote that this column absolutely does not put Pitt on the bubble. They are in by every projection that I’ve seen. (But that would quickly change with a few more losses.)
As I said just below the bubble graph, the ranges are screening criteria based on historical data. They are not intended to be an absolute judgement.
VaWolf82KeymasterI’m surprised. More optimism here than I expected. Certainly more than I have.
I don’t have much optimism either. But it doesn’t take any at all to say “This is what they have to do.”
Optimism would be “I think that they will make it in.”
VaWolf82KeymasterBut if I saw a team with our record get in, I would think it was ridiculous.
So would anyone that bothered to look. However, absolutely no one is talking about getting in with the current record.
I’m not seeing it. We are big 0-8 vs the RPI top 50. We have zero wins of any consequence and versus the top 4 in our conference we are 0-5
Pitt is IN on every bracket that I’ve looked at. They are 1-6 vs RPI Top 50 (win against #40 Stanford) and are also 0-5 against the Top 4 in the ACC.
VaWolf82KeymasterDoes anyone else smell a strong finish and good run in the ACC tourney all to end up just short and get a high NIT seed?
No. A run to the ACCT championship game (while unlikely) would be enough this year. State just had too many losses in Sid’s first year for anything less than the conference championship to get in.
VaWolf82KeymasterI wouldn’t bet my house on it, but I’m hoping that 2-1 (demoralized loss to UM followed by a win @Pitt and BC) and a Friday win would be enough. Less than that will surely not be enough.
VaWolf82Keymasterat least one in the ACC tournament, we’re in.
Thursday losses are horrible, but Thursday wins are virtually meaningless.
VaWolf82KeymasterThis game will have little if any bearing on the NCAAT for this State team. Barring a run to the ACCT title game, that ship has already sailed (and sunk).
Herb proved beyond all doubt that this statement is horribly wrong. In 2002 and 2003 combined, State won a total of three games against NCAA teams. Yet State made the tourney both years.
Note that there is a big difference in having a chance and being good enough to take advantage of that chance. But State definitely still has a chance at a NCAAT bid without playing in the ACCT championship game.
VaWolf82KeymasterThe previews are wonderful, but kinda tough on the ol’ pc when going through page by page when the previews double as the game thread.
You can add comments to the preview entry from the forums. Thus we shouldn’t need a separate thread.
VaWolf82KeymasterMy first State-Carolina game was Clyde the Glide with the between the legs pass to Hawkeye Whitney for a slam.
My first was Clyde to Dudley Bradley for a slam.
VaWolf82KeymasterOver the years, I’ve missed alot of UNC/State games because they’re not carried by the local cable company. The football game wasn’t carried one year so that they could show the locally-produced recap of the Hokie football season. Naturally, tonight’s game will be carried.
I’m not much for predictions, but I’m expecting for some LOL comments in tonight’s game thread.
VaWolf82KeymasterImprovement only matters when your team is improving faster than the opponents.
They keep score for a reason.
VaWolf82KeymasterCaptain Obvious here:
I don’t blame ESPN at all. Why would you discuss a team that hasn’t beaten anyone of note all year long?I would change the end of your post to “latest dagger”.
VaWolf82KeymasterIn one of the quirks of RPI calcs, State’s OOC SOS dropped about 9 spots over the weekend. This change was obviously not a product of the VT/State game but added to the misery of playing a bad team late in the year.
VaWolf82KeymasterI took a look, too and Dance Card has us as the 14th team out – not even close.
Losing to Clemson hurt big time. If you noticed, FSU took a big jump up at the Dance Card with their victory over Pitt (now ~3 out). They were over a dozen out before the Pitt game. So a couple of big wins would pay huge dividends for any of the bubble teams.
The announcers on the FSU/Pitt game were horribly wrong about FSU’s chances (as witnessed by the jump on the Dance Card). It’s one thing to say that you don’t think that FSU can win enough big games. It’s another to proclaim that Pitt is in with one questionable Top 50 win while saying that FSU needs 3 or more (in addition to the two they already had) to have a chance.
