I have a good friend that is a die-hard Cowboys fan:
– He watches the 4th quarter of preseason games
– He got Direct TV so that he could watch all the games
– He reads all of the draft articles and all of the first-round projections. He looked absolutely heart-broken when I told him that he should never get his hopes up as long as that idiot is making all of the key decisions. If not for an even bigger fool (Herschel Walker trade) and a friend from college (Jimmy Johnson), they would have never won anything with Jones in charge. I think that his look was due to both the accuracy of my statements and his inability to rebut them.
The capper was when I asked him how many games they would have won over the last several years if they hadn’t lucked into Tony Romo…who was expected to be cut before Q. Carter got busted on a drug test. Once again, the look was priceless.
VaWolf82KeymasterThat is why we pounce on them when they do open their filthy traps (and they often can’t contain it forever) – it serves as more than adequate deterence.
I think that the punishment should fit the crime…and Sterling’s punishment goes far beyond that. People are bringing up past issues…which prove that he is a loathsome piece of trash. But if those past actions weren’t sufficient for punishment by the NBA, then what was said in a private conversations doesn’t justify the penalties levied. The punishment is clearly directed at the quelling the uproar, not because of righteous indignation over what was actually said.
Note that I’m not losing sleep either way.
VaWolf82KeymasterSince Gottfried arrived, he not only has signed three straight top 20 recruiting classes
When I looked up the rankings of those 3 classes, I saw a trend. It might just be data scatter or it might not. Let’s see if the 2015 class continues the trend or reverses it.
As someone else already noted, there is no one left from his best class and the accomplishments of that class were rather meager. Accomplishments are always better measuring sticks than subjective rankings.
VaWolf82KeymasterIt makes sense to put one of the VA teams against MD for their first trip with the Dark Side.
VaWolf82Keymaster(only one of which is actually in the league – JJ Hickson).
Which obviously brings into question the supposition that State is squandering talent. Personally, I think that a number of those early entries were grossly overrated by both the media and State fans. Their absence from the NBA tends to support my opinion.
However, it is important to maintain perspective…..the real issue is wins/losses and everything else is secondary.
VaWolf82KeymasterKatz always has more than a bit of uninformed garbage in his writings,
Say it isn’t so!
I was going to give Katz the title of “Master of the Obvious” or MOO for short. State doesn’t have anyone on the bench or in the in-coming class to make up for Warren’s loss. Thus it is pretty obvious that State has to be listed among the big losers.
04/29/2014 at 3:46 PM in reply to: Troy added to NC State Football Schedule + more on scheduling #51507VaWolf82KeymasterYes, in the world of Craigslist ticket availability…no idea why anyone would bother with LTRs or season tickets at all.
I think that BobLee is the first person I saw write about the impact of large, high-def TVs on sports. The obstacles/cost of seeing games in person are substantial to many. Poor schedules are just another reason for people to stay at home on their couches.
You have always been a big proponent of ESPN’s GamePlan. You can go to the stadium and watch one game or stay at home and watch anything that interests you. Not one of life’s hardest decisions for many.
Notre Dame either joins a super conference or they don’t get invited.
Pardon me, if I don’t hold my breath while waiting on this.
VaWolf82KeymasterPlus you wouldn’t have to PAY small schools to play you. More game-day revenue. Cha-ching.
I don’t think so. If you drop the small schools who play for pay, then you end up scheduling more home/home series with NO REVENUE on away games. A home/home against Ohio State will net less money than two home games against Ohio University.
There are plenty of reasons to want a better OOC scheduling. Increased revenue isn’t one of them.
VaWolf82KeymasterAs long as ND has the NBC contract, they will never join a conference in FB. The major conferences will always schedule smaller schools so that they can get the money generated by home games. You don’t have to like it…but to think otherwise is delusional.
VaWolf82KeymasterI don’t have to take a test to know the answer to this one.
VaWolf82KeymasterI voted for Nate.
VaWolf82KeymasterThe ACC was second-rate by every conceivable metric. Piss-poor performance in the NCAAT was simply the last possible measuring stick.
VaWolf82KeymasterAny survey that starts with “90s music” is automatically invalid. Then follow it up with picking a topping for something called “fro-yo” means that I don’t have a clue…and couldn’t possibly care less.
Level #3 – Gluttony. (not a bad guess, but I have no idea how they figured it out)
04/10/2014 at 12:30 PM in reply to: TJ Warren declares for NBA draft; future of NC State basketball #51028VaWolf82KeymasterFifteen schools have already called Graham to show interest in recruiting him since he received his complete release late Wednesday night. Among those to reach out to the Class of 2014’s best available point guard are Boston College, Cincinnati, Creighton, Florida, Florida St, George Mason, Georgia Tech, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Providence, South Florida, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Xavier.
VaWolf82KeymasterI should have expanded the section on raising tuition to cover coaching salaries. According to Wikipedia, VCU has an undergrad student population of 24,000 students and total student population of 30,000. An across the board tuition increase of $100/student would net $3M.
That option doesn’t work for small schools like Tulsa with a total enrollment of about 5,000. (Never realized that they were a private school.) But there are a lot of LARGE schools that are considered mid-majors
VaWolf82KeymasterI assume that the NCAAT tournament works hard to balance each bracket in terms of seeds 1-16 strength to weakness.
The Selection Committee does this to a certain extent based on THEIR overall seedings. But they also play games with getting teams to play close to home and there are also rules about when teams from same conference can play each other.
Not a perfect system by any means, but it’s not horrible either.
VaWolf82KeymasterI guess my rather limited inner mathematician would like the NCAAT to be the exact teams listed 1-68 on the season end RPI list for a solid starting point for all topics but that would take all the fun out of the madness.
I think that the fun in March Madness comes from watching the games, the upsets, and the kids. BJD and I disagree over the ideal tourney make-up…as I would like to lose the bottom 10-15 conference champions and increase the no of upsets.
The huge differences in strength of schedules across the breadth of college basketball makes it impossible for me to put faith in any mathematical system for selecting/seeding the field. Absolutely no one (regardless of any claims to the contrary) really knew how good Wichita St was going to be when they had to play some real teams. You can repeat that statement for about a dozen other teams.
Here’s an interesting item to ponder: all of the pundits claimed that the Mid-West was the toughest region. Does the fact that the 8-seed Kentucky (RPI of 17 should be ~ 5-seed ) won that regional support or refute the pre-tourney evaluations?
VaWolf82KeymasterAnyway, the anal retentive accountant in me wants to reconcile the NCAAT Champion RPI for 11-25 which should be 23.8% for a column total of 100%.
Thanks. Found the screw-up on my spreadsheet and will update that table sometime today.
I would have thought that the average RPI of the champ (6.9) would be closer to the average RPI of the runner-up (11.38) if I am reading the columns correctly.
Why? If the ranking system has any correlation to reality, shouldn’t the average champion be ranked higher than the average runner-up? (Yes, you’re reading the columns correctly.)
I’m not sure how much significance we should put into averages, but it is something that I had never thought of looking at. It’s interesting that the average Final Four loser ranks 11.98, very close to the average champ game loser at 11.38.
VaWolf82KeymasterState will definitely need that kind of season out of Cat.
VaWolf82KeymasterThis makes more sense:
Turgeon was going to be over the scholarship limit next season, so the writing was on the wall in College Park that a couple of players could be in trouble.
VaWolf82KeymasterLast week, Maryland was over the limit of scholarship players, having 13 in the program.
What was left out of this sentence? As written, it doesn’t make any sense.
Scout shows UMD with 5 incoming freshman. Were the transfers anticipated or was Turgeon inviting kids to leave?
VaWolf82KeymasterI thought about comparing the best mid-major programs to teams routinely found in the middle of the power conferences. But the prospects were just too depressing to seriously consider.
VaWolf82KeymasterHe directly/indirectly is trying to fix one of his weaknesses and we slam him for it. Gott can coach O, but needs the guys with right tools/attitude to play D.
There are a lot of assumptions in that conclusion. Actual evidence shows that gott’s teams have always been weak defensively.
VaWolf82KeymasterAnyone know what time tip-off is tonight? (I’m not going to watch the pre-game show!)Looks like tipoff is 9:10pm Eastern
