VaWolf82Keymaster
I wish that I could prove him wrong.
EDIT
On 2nd thought, I think I can prove him wrong. Most State fans that I know think that the basketball program SHOULD be relevant; not that it IS still relevant.VaWolf82KeymasterAny links to look for for those of us who don’t have cable TV?
I don’t have a link, but the game is only available online…ESPN3
VaWolf82KeymasterNice job on the preview.
The Pack should be able to easily move the ball against the ODU defense. If it can’t things are worse than we feared and it’s going to be a long night and season.
Fans all too often maximize the positives and minimize the negatives in these types of games. I tend to concentrate on the negatives since too many of the perceived positives disappear when playing better opponents…while the negatives will only get worse. It appears that you take the same approach.
If the Pack defense has truly improved during the off-season then they shouldn’t have a problem out scoring ODU and essentially cover the spread.
With so few offensive starters returning, it’s hard to judge just how good ODU’s offense will be this season. Nevertheless, a poor defensive performance will certainly be bad news when looking towards ACC play.
VaWolf82KeymasterSarcasm should never be taken personally ’round these parts.
Except when it is personal.
😉VaWolf82KeymasterThe list of disagreements between BJD and myself continue to grow….politics, cats, and now this inane love for fantasy football. Before long, I won’t even talk to him. 😉
VaWolf82KeymasterVA-wuf… at least you’re good on VaMountainApples and maybe Clover & Sourwood honey ( theere used to a great roadside stand off Hwy29 near Soapville and another on Hwy8 near Stuart for that)… idk.. Sorry about the rest of your diet….
I’ve given up fruit and honey for now. Once weight and blood sugar stabilizes, then I’ll see where I’m at. But where in the heck is Soapville? I’ve driven on Hwy29 from Danville to I-66 and never seen it. (Stuart is one of those places that you will never end up in accidentally…it takes real effort to get there.)
VaWolf82KeymasterThe nice thing of being stressed the f-ck out and having migraine tendencies AND a stomach that can’t handle anything good anymore…I’m down 25 pounds this year and 10 away from my college weight.
Oatmeal, v8 fruit/veggie blend, saltines, wheat toast with spreadable fruit, boiled chicken a few times a week for protein. Oh yeah, you must be so jelly.
Sorry to hear that. I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in May. Shifted to low carb diet in the hopes of coming off medicine (metformin). I’ve lost 30 pounds so far with no exercise (with alot more than 10 to go to get back to college weight). For the most part, low carb is a matter of shifting, rather than giving up stuff:
– No wheat, but still have pancakes, waffles, and gravy/biscuits (more like muffins).
– No potatoes, but still have garlic mashed and twice-baked (cauliflower). (“Tater” Tots, french fries, and hash brown substitutes remain untested.)
– No sugar, but still have desert (Bought ice cream maker and been making it all summer).
– Eating out is now more trouble than it is worth….which hasn’t made momma too happy. But it could be worse…I have a friend that is allergic to beef, pork, lamb, venison…all from a tick bite.

(May wear off over time. He’ll be retested this fall, which would be two years from initial diagnosis.)VaWolf82KeymasterWarning….Rabbit Trail ahead
All of this chatter about the UNC scandal got me wondering about whatever happened to dear old Butch. Google to the rescue:
VaWolf82KeymasterI see the following scenarios:
Worst Case: Minor sanctions confined to only football.
This seems impossible. The issue is no longer about improper benefits…it’s about fraudulent classes and academic eligibility. If the NCAA restricts discovery to the last few years (when BB players didn’t play with Prof ‘Roo), FB can’t forfeit the same games twice; but it’s possible that the sanctions could spread to non-revenue sports.
The key issue is how far back does the NCAA try to look and how far back is reliable info on fraud available? This issue will determine how far and wide the sanctions go.
VaWolf82KeymasterDamn. You people are posting faster than I can edit the post you’re quoting.
VaWolf82KeymasterAlso, their accreditation has already come into question at least a little.
http://www.newsobserver.com/2012/12/14/2545326/accrediting-agency-to-review-academic.html
I didn’t remember that (article from Dec 2012). If the accrediting agency was interested in reviewing how cheating was handled, it seems likely that they will be really interested in fraudulent classes. We’ll have to see what the accrediting agency’s response is to UNC’s Sgt Schultz defense. I certainly hope that they talk to Prof ‘Roo and Mary Willingham.
VaWolf82KeymasterFERPA works with the media. But with the NCAA?…not so much. FERPA just means that no info can be released without the student’s permission. The university may just provide info with the student’s name removed. Another possibility is that the athletes are required to give permission for NCAA review.
Side story about FERPA…My son’s degree required an unpaid internship which counted as a summer-school class that I had to pay for. There was confusion over the credit hours required and I ended up having to pay for one additional credit hour. The school wouldn’t tell me how much more I had to pay because of “FERPA”. I told them that I wasn’t sending them a blank check so exactly how did they see this issue being resolved? I was quickly transferred to a “supervisor” for resolution.
VaWolf82KeymasterIn general, the NCAA doesn’t interfere or control the university’s academic business. They have placed requirements on high school classes and SAT scores for entering college, but say very little about what happens after an athlete is enrolled. So is a no-show, one-paper class acceptable to the NCAA? Even today, the NCAA would probably say that the university is responsible for the academic requirements for any given class, department, or major.
I believe that this is where UNC screwed up when they took money away from Prof ‘Roo. This action proves that his classes DO NOT meet UNC’s own requirements and thus these classes are fraudulent. The fact that the fraud classes included regular students along with a high percentage of athletes doesn’t change the fact the classes were fraudulent.
If I were on the NCAA team, I would simply ask for an explanation of how UNC justifies uses fraudulent classes when determining eligibility for ANY athlete. When the stammering stopped, it would then be time to recalculate the eligibility of ALL athletes with fraudulent classes on their transcript. ANY team that used ineligible athletes would be required to forfeit all games in which those athletes played. (Look at the the FSU case that was just finishing up when Marvin started tweeting for a reference.)
The fact that regular students attended the fraudulent classes is another big mess that UNC doesn’t want to acknowledge. Basically, UNC sold class credits to the students..no work required, just cash. (Que up all of the jokes about mail-order degrees.) It would be a very bad day for UNC if this issue caused their accreditation to come into question.
VaWolf82KeymasterI can’t see any reason not to spread some of that money out to the people who are at the core of the business. Otherwise, you just wind up with stuff like what’s happening at UNC.
Your if-then isn’t realistic. No matter how much colleges “pay” each athlete, the top athletes are always going to be worth more. So even if the athletes were being paid significant amounts of money, there would always be agents looking to secure potential first-round draft picks as clients.
As for not seeing any reason to pay..that just means that you haven’t looked at the available info on athletic dept finances (beyond ND, Texas, etc). Football and men’s basketball make money. Everyone else is red ink (with women’s basketball being the worst offender). So the bottom line will always come down to which sports are you going to eliminate (while staying Title IX compliant) to fund your athlete’s payroll?
VaWolf82KeymasterAs Va Wolf has so brilliantly illustrated, you MUST play good competition to receive an at large bid to the dance.
I have obviously failed miserably. You have to BEAT good teams to make the NCAAT. 🙂
VaWolf82KeymasterIf the offense includes a QB this year, then this would certainly constitute a change.
VaWolf82KeymasterIs Washburn’s restaurant still open?
It didn’t look open a few weeks ago.
More:
Washburn co-owned a restaurant, Washburn’s Wings and More, that opened in Hickory in May 2011. Washburn said the Hickory location was closed around April 2013 to open the restaurant at a larger location in Conover. The new Washburn’s Wings and More location closed in February 2014.
VaWolf82KeymasterI’d rather be delusionally optimistic than morbidly pessimistic.
I strive for realism and will get excited after I see something…well exciting.
VaWolf82KeymasterThe delusionally optimistic are excited at the start of every season. All too often, that excitement is extremely short-lived.
VaWolf82KeymasterAnybody that wouldn’t put Bruce Pearl in their Top 50 is an absolute moron.
If Herb is getting the pity factor, then Pearl is being penalized for the sleaze factor.
VaWolf82KeymasterLooks like they are going to drag out the top-25
#24 Bob McKillop of Davidson
http://espn.go.com/ncb/notebook/_/page/top50coaches/no-24-davidson-bob-mckillop
VaWolf82KeymasterHerb in the “just missed” list. Makes sense to me. He had a horrible record versus the RPI Top-50 at State while cleaning up on the bottom half of the conference. He must not be doing much better at ASU based on NCAA appearances/performance.
Since he can’t beat the Top-50, he can’t be in the Top 50
VaWolf82KeymasterI was a chaperone on an NHS trip to NYC. We took the train and had subway passes. Left ~6am and got to Penn Station (underneath MSG) at ~1:30. Great trip and avoided all of the hassels of either driving in NYC or flying.
The train might not be economical for a family of four, but for one or two people it is a no-brainer (at least starting in central VA).
VaWolf82Keymasterbut they had better be aware that many season-ticket fans are fed up with the cupcake games
They are aware of ticket sales. Beyond that, I wouldn’t hazard a guess at what they might be aware of or care about.
VaWolf82KeymasterConsistent top-20 classes are what it is going to take to take us to another level, and so far Gott has acheived that.
It takes more than recruiting rankings. I’m not from MO, but so far I haven’t been shown enough to warrant boundless optimism.
