Time for deep route off of play-action.
VaWolf82KeymasterCan we play big boy football?
Never have, never will.
Youngster. You never watched Ted Brown.
VaWolf82Keymastershould continue to push the Pack towards getting untracked.
Do they really need help jumping the rails?
🙂Thanks for the writeup. Good summary and glossary building too:

VaWolf82KeymasterAnother way to look at the bottom of both divisions is to see who they beat in conference
State has two wins, ‘Cuse and WF
‘Cuse has one win, WF
WF has no winsUVA has two wins, ‘Ville and Pitt
Pitt has two wins, BC and VT
VT has two wins, UNC and DukeThe top half of the Atlantic got three easy conference wins (BC still has to play ‘Cuse) compared to the more even play in the Coastal.
VaWolf82KeymasterSagarin Rankings
 15.. Florida State
 25.. Clemson
 32.. Louisville
 54.. Boston College
 72.. NC State
 78.. Syracuse
 149.. Wake Forest 28.. Miami-Florida
 30.. Georgia Tech
 36.. Duke
 41.. Virginia Tech
 62.. North Carolina
 63.. Virginia
67.. Pittsburgh– Neither division is “good” so I don’t see the point in arguing that one is better
– A team is more likely to have “sure” wins in the Atlantic
– A team is more likely to have “sure” losses in the Atlantic
– As noted above, the Coastal is much more balanced and competitiveVaWolf82KeymasterVaWolf82KeymasterKudos to BobLee for pointing out that:
North Carolina will pay PR firm $1.65 million for help with academic fraud scandal
A UNC spokersperson told Kane that the public relation will not be covered by state funds or tuition dollars.
I’m so sure.
VaWolf82KeymasterSo, if we can win at Carolina do we effectively raise ourselves out of this lower tier of bowls where playing ECU is a possibility?
There was a confusing article about the bowls in the N&O last week(?). It said that at 7-5, the Belk Bowl would be interested in State.
VaWolf82KeymasterThere are obviously alot of people that love them, but I’m not one of them. My one visit was to one in Southern Cal and I’ve never been back..even though they opened a chain here last year.
VaWolf82KeymasterThere was a big difference in SOS between what was shown last night and what Sagarin calculates for TCU. On Sagarin, there is not much difference between Miss St and TCU…but not on what the committee is using.
I suspect that Ohio St’s SOS will tumble over the next two weeks after playing Indiana and Michigan. Hopefully, the Big 10 championship game won’t be enough to pull them into serious contention.
Baylor vs TCU is an interesting discussion. But for me, the interesting point is that the committee doesn’t seem to be paying as much attention to the head-to-head results as the talking heads. Shocking huh?
VaWolf82Keymasterbut can be incredibly frustrating when you try to make a high information post that is blocked because you used a word, phrase or link that is filtered, and you have no way to know what’s triggering the filter.
Quoting this again so that the people behind the scenes (that can actually spell HTML) will hopefully see it.
For the rest of us, compose long posts in a word processor so you can try various combinations. In other places, posts with a lot of hyperlinks will get blocked (have no clue if that happens here or not).
VaWolf82KeymasterDo you think your view is skewed because MSU’s loss is more fresh than the others?
Not really. I’ve been expecting Alabama to beat them for weeks, so I’ve spent some time thinking about how I would rank a very good team that doesn’t even qualify for their championship game. The other interesting scenario is what do you do with a one-loss FSU that still wins the ACC?
Both of these scenarios would make for some interesting discussion…with the emphasis on ‘cuss.
VaWolf82KeymasterThere is no Big 12 championship.
You don’t have to play a championship game to have a conference champion. But since State hasn’t won one since 1979, you’re forgiven for forgetting. 🙂
Do you say that because you think the Big12 champion is better than MSU?
Don’t know. But I’m betting that a team that doesn’t even play in the conference championship won’t be selected over two one-loss conference champs.
VaWolf82KeymasterNote that the ultimate goal is “good”, not just improving. But it would have been silly to have expected “good” this year.
Luckily, wins and losses are quantized so improvement has no choice but to lead to good.
Not so. After 10 years, the Herbavores were still trumpeting “improvement” over meaningful accomplishments…which is what it takes to meet my definition of “good”.
VaWolf82KeymasterThere are those who feel at this point in time every win is a good one. Considering the dearth of talent and experience on this team valid arguments can be made to that extent.
Every win is always a good one…but that doesn’t necessarily mean that is something to crow about. Your claim of quantitative data on GSU doesn’t stand much scrutiny….unless you use the sliding scale you spoke of. You shouldn’t have been shocked when others reject your relativistic approach. (Note that I don’t remember anyone specifically complaining about GSU…which supposedly was the reason for this thread. Most of the complaints that I remember were about the weakness of the entire OOC schedule.)
Personally, I had 6-6 as the absolute best-case scenario for this year. So I’m happy that the team will reach or exceed my projection and show real progress over last year. Note that the ultimate goal is “good”, not just improving. But it would have been silly to have expected “good” this year.
VaWolf82KeymasterA one-loss B-12 champ (TCU or Baylor) will go over a one-loss Miss St team that doesn’t even play in the championship game.
VaWolf82KeymasterSo I’m not allowed to say I feel someone is being overly negative in their view of NC State?
I think that it would be better if you focused on the accuracy of the statements being made; or the completeness of the conclusions reached and stayed away from anything that could be regarded as a personal attack. That’s what I try to do when I counter points as opposed to saying that I think that the poster has their head up their a**.
VaWolf82Keymasterthey moved up this year.
That makes all the difference (not!). Their record (and State’s) speaks for itself.
VaWolf82KeymasterDiscredit is the wrong verb. They are a good team in their division, but that is it. The record amassed by a I-AA school is never going to be impressive, regardless of how you spin it.

VaWolf82KeymasterIn other words, Doeren and his charges hold their future in their own hands.
Well said

First of all, this just isn’t true. When the choices are limited (like for daytime TV), a football game is often the best thing available. Secondly, what are they going to broadcast that would get more viewers?
VaWolf82KeymasterThankfully, ND has their second loss. But unfortunately this just means that they will take a bowl spot away from an ACC school.
VaWolf82KeymasterSomeone who knows the game can see progress being made and the program moving in the right direction.
True, but there’s always someone claiming progress is being made even if it isn’t visible in the W/L record….and those someones rarely meet your qualification of “knowing the game”. I’ve seen this scenario played out twice a year for the last 20 years that I’ve been on the internet. I’m not from MO, but I want to be shown; not just told.
PS for the overly sensitive – None of this says that I’m rooting for DD’s dismissal. For me, there is not enough evidence to say either way.
