Since this cuts off in forums, the ask is “Predict seed and who we would theoretically play in Round of 32? (should we get that far, assuming nothing).
Obviously, our glorious leader forgot about the “edit” button to over ride whatever character count WordPress uses.
VaWolf82KeymasterI posted it because I think it is an improvement for the conference over the current system.
How is setting blatantly unbalanced and unfair schedules an “improvement for the conference”?
First reason is their top SOS, which is exactly what you are asking about. So it is self-evident.
What is self-evident is that State was able to put together a great SOS without needing the hardest conference schedule. What is also self-evident is that consistently having the toughest schedule in the conference would make it even more difficult to earn a two-round bye in the ACCT.
– A complete round-robin schedule is fair, but will never happen.
– More conference games would make the schedules more fair, but are unlikely to happen.
– Completely random schedules would still leave some teams with harder schedules in a given year, but should tend to even out over time and is as fair as we could get. What we have now is not fair, but not expected to change.
VaWolf82KeymasterI understand the logic but it still seemed odd coming from a fan of a team that lost on the road at two sub-100 RPI teams that played on the first day of the conference tournament.
Why should piss-poor results change my logic?
VaWolf82KeymasterNorth (a.k.a. the Big East division): Syracuse, BC, Pitt, Notre Dame, Louisville
Central: State, UNC, Duke, UVA, VT
South: FSU, Miami, GT, Clemson, WakeWhy is this in State’s best interests? To be more specific, why is it in State’s interest to have amongst the toughest basketball schedules year after year?
VaWolf82Keymasteryou could move to a 23 game conference schedule,
If you’re going to dream, you should start with something that might happen in this reality.
VaWolf82KeymasterTrout, here’s a blurb from last year’s article:
Line #1 is equivalent. Line #3 is identical. Line #4 is nearly equivalent. This leaves the variation in schedule strength between Duke, UNC, and State to the differences in just one opponent.
Duke’s opponent (SYR) > State’s opponent (Pitt) > UNC’s opponent (State). So the difference in schedule difference between UNC and State…is that UNC played State twice.
VaWolf82KeymasterI guess a head-to-head comparison might give different results than looking at the conference as a whole.
But you could still do a head-to-head comparison using the same technique. For instance, UVA and State played each other and both played WF, so the difference in schedule between these two teams would be:
State: UNC and Clemson
UVA: L’ville and VTGlancing quickly at the matrix, I guess a head-to-head technique would flip UNC and Duke as to which had the hardest schedule. But the difference between the two schedules is slight no matter what technique you use.
VaWolf82KeymasterI’m having flashbacks to a Lee Fowler prediction that State would be one of the top teams “next year” because everyone was losing so much. That “next year”, State finished the year on the Herbble following a collapse of massive proportions.
VaWolf82KeymasterMove ahead, put it in the past
Does it seem like we say that alot, or is just me?
On the other hand, my worst-case projections had this as a wasted year after the loss of Warren. Next year could be good if State doesn’t lose anyone unexpectedly.
VaWolf82KeymasterSide note….The gravatar thing showed up quick. Just uploaded the pic this morning.
Stupid site….wouldn’t properly downsize my license tag that I use on PP.
VaWolf82KeymasterThis page shows State as a probably 9-seed.
VaWolf82KeymasterYou seriously can’t be surprised.
The BC game proved beyond all doubt that this team can drop a turd with absolutely no notice.
VaWolf82Keymaster20 wins, 20 wins. We in.
Some engineer is going to shoot me.
Luckily for you, I don’t know your address.
🙂VaWolf82KeymasterHahahaha – if you couldn’t make fun of me, who would we make fun of?! 🙂
I like to keep my options open….but occasionally I will take a cheap shot even if it is as easy as shooting fish in a barrel.
VaWolf82KeymasterAnyone who supports Gott certainly has similar aspirations to you and BJD.
Note that there is a significant difference between aspirations and realistic projections.
VaWolf82KeymasterAllow me to play Cheater’s Advocate. I would maintain that it’s not the responsibility of the Athletic Department to make sure that AFAM is running a legitimate set of classes. The athletes simply took the same classes everybody else had access to. The NCAA will maintain that they don’t police grading policies and such.
I agree that the Athletic Dept is not responsible for policing academic standards. But I disagree that academic fraud involving athletes ALONG WITH regular students falls beyond the purview of the NCAA. While the NCAA has no say on the regular students, the athletes do fall within their rules.
Bottom line is that UNC staff conspired to commit academic malfeasance to keep athletes eligible for at least two decades. The NCAA will have to come down hard on UNC to maintain even their thin veil of relevance.
VaWolf82KeymasterYou can wait as long as you want and the schools that have ever been penalized over academics (like UConn) will never forget.
VaWolf82Keymaster1) make sure non-athletes had the same benefits,
Academic fraud is not a benefit. The fact that regular students (if you can call frat rats “normal”) also participated in the fraud shouldn’t impact the NCAA punishment of UNC. UNC professors and staff colluded to keep athletes eligible.
If the NCAA lets UNC skate, the uproar would be deafening and would literally signal the end of the NCAA.
VaWolf82KeymasterPalm and the Bubble
In for Now
NC State has been riding the roller coaster a bit of late, but the win at Clemson makes it four wins out of five. If they can avoid another mini-slump, they should be in the field.Work to Do
Pitt has good wins over North Carolina and Notre Dame, but they still don’t have a good record against better opposition. The Panthers have three bad losses, including a recent one at Wake Forest. A home loss to Miami last time out was especially painful. Schedule — at Florida StThe Hurricanes went into Pittsburgh without Angel Rodriguez and found a way to win, which puts them back on the bubble. The win at Duke will only carry them so far though. VaWolf82KeymasterI linked it in the open thread, but this deserves its own entry.
I started it after lunch and before I read your open thread. But it will be good to have a separate thread to archive any juicy quotes from the opinion pieces that are sure to follow.
VaWolf82KeymasterBubble Watch.
What makes the 2014-15 season different? Loyal Bubble Watchers will note that this season’s “others” (read: mid-majors) category has been startlingly thin all winter…The problem is that none of these teams have worthy NCAA tournament résumés. All of them need to win their conference’s automatic bid to get in. A so-so mid-major league with one great team is the would-be bid thief’s path of least resistance. This season, those paths don’t exist. If Murray State loses in the Ohio Valley final, its conqueror won’t steal a bubble team’s bid. It will take Murray State’s.
This means the bid thieves will have to come from high-major leagues… It happens, but it’s rare.
VaWolf82KeymasterBut the biggest issue for Syracuse is the lost scholarships. With the four-year period beginning in 2016-17 since the school has already signed four players for next season (pushing the number of scholarships to 13), the program will lose three scholarships in each of those four seasons. Who moves on remains to be seen, but this will have a significant impact on the program and its depth moving forward.
VaWolf82KeymasterGreat title, but not much else:
Boeheim’s arrogance catches up to him; Syracuse, ACC pay price
I don’t see how this negatively affects the “ACC”.
VaWolf82KeymasterThis looks very, very bad for UNC.

Shocking Conclusion:
Neither the offense nor the defense is good enough to go very far. -
