Sound familiar? For their sakes, I hope it is accurate.
According to a source, Anderson and Senior Associate Athletic Director David Cohen on Saturday interviewed former ASU assistant Scott Pera, who’s now an assistant at Rice. Buffalo’s Bobby Hurley, Texas Christian’s Trent Johnson, Memphis’ Josh Pastner and former St. John’s coach Steve Lavin also have been connected with the ASU search.
VaWolf82KeymasterConfession time….Who doesn’t know who Mr. Greenjeans is/was?
No Google Allowed.Sorry, CD. Haven’t worked in a garden since my junior year at State. (Which was long enough ago that I distinctly remember Mr. GJ.)
Corn, potatoes, and peanuts were my favorites….and squash the absolute worst.

This set of rankings doesn’t seem credible…
Rankings this time of year are never really credible…especially since we don’t even know for sure who will be on most of the teams just yet. They are intended to generate clicks for the website and have the side benefit of giving us something to discuss.
VaWolf82KeymasterFascinating article. When I opened the thread, I was expecting something along the lines of this TED Talk:
Hugh Herr is building the next generation of bionic limbs, robotic prosthetics inspired by nature’s own designs. Herr lost both legs in a climbing accident 30 years ago; now, as the head of the MIT Media Lab’s Biomechatronics group, he shows his incredible technology in a talk that’s both technical and deeply personal — with the help of ballroom dancer Adrianne Haslet-Davis, who lost her left leg in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, and performs again for the first time on the TED stage.

Having three years to judge the players should minimize the busts and wasted dollars.
VaWolf82KeymasterCBS has UVA #1, UNC #2, Duke #15, State #16, Miami #21, FSU #25
VaWolf82KeymasterPulling for Wiscy, but expecting a Duke W. Best thing I can say is it beats the Heels getting another.
If Duke wins, you’ve forgotten the added benefit of how much it will irritate the UNC fans.
VaWolf82KeymasterHardly a straw man. You (and others) are speculating on improvement because of the decline in coaching within the ACC. But one of the problems with this line of logic is that there are strong programs and coaches all over the country. If State can’t move up nationally while those coaches you mentioned are still here, then there is no reason to think that their absence will somehow improve State’s position.
I’ve always said that the credit or blame for the results falls on the head coach’s desk…not who is sitting behind the big desk at other universities.
VaWolf82KeymasterI didn’t read it as ONLY possible during those periods.
Ok, but that’s the way it reads to me:
I also think there is good reason to believe that more in conference opportunity will open up in the near future, with all of K, Roy, Pitino, and Boeheim (and Larranaga) all likely to retire within the next 5 years, give or take.
I see no mention of moving past anyone before the better coaches retire. But my main point is the same one that 1.21JW made with a ton of statistics…State and Gott have to improve if it is going to do substantially better in the NCAAT. Some are optimistic about the future and others are quite pessimistic. For now, I remain agnostic (and of course, sarcastic).
VaWolf82KeymasterI also think there is good reason to believe that more in conference opportunity will open up in the near future, with all of K, Roy, Pitino, and Boeheim (and Larranaga) all likely to retire within the next 5 years, give or take. It’s hard for me to see any of those programs replacing those guys seamlessly. Gott has positioned our program to make a push for top 2-3 in the conference as those coaches turn over.
I know that Tau isn’t the first to posit this, but I completely disagree with this logic.
What this is saying is that State can’t move up in the conference and we have to wait until everyone falls back. All that would mean is that State would be at/near the top of a weakened ACC and would be in no better position wrt to the NCAAT than we are today.
If State can’t really compete in a strong ACC, then either fight for a change or learn to accept your current position. Waiting for people to retire serves no purpose whatsoever.
From BJD:
But even if you told me that MG would never grow beyond his current B+ level of performance…I’m not sure I would roll the dice.
You know the difference between an optimist and a pessimist? Experience!
I’m not ready to go through another coaching search either.VaWolf82KeymasterVaWolf82KeymasterGood summary article, but doesn’t include anything about Texas/Shaka
VaWolf82KeymasterI know I am biased, but it seems like the State job is better to me.
The two coaching searches that we’ve endured over the last decade says something completely different.
After the football coaching search, it was obvious that State’s football coaching position was better thought of than the basketball job. In fact the last two coaching searches in both sports shows that the football program is considered more desirable than the basketball program. I think that BJD’s line about letting the market decide what something is worth has merit.
VaWolf82Keymasterhttp://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/12608854/shaka-smart-new-texas-longhorns-coach
Terms of Smart’s contract were not immediately released. Barnes made $2.62 million last season. Smart made $1.8 million with the Rams.
On the radio this morning, they said $2.8M + $800k incentives.
VaWolf82KeymasterTweeking of the rules won’t help the inconsistency of the referees. Even this is fixable, but the conferences are going to have to want to fix it; instead of covering it up.
VaWolf82KeymasterI don’t know what goes through anyone’s mind, but it really isn’t a terrible life to have a 7-figure salary along with the adoration that he is getting from his school and the local fans. If he is really never planning to leave, then all of his comments play really well to his home crowd.
However, he needs to remember the line about getting off of the bridge before you set it on fire. The AD’s he makes fun of today may be in charge of NCAAT seeding decisions tomorrow.
VaWolf82KeymasterI love the internet when it fills in the blanks in my memories. Remember these guys?
Justin Flatt – SG
Dominic Mejia – SG
Adam Simons – CMichael O’Donnell – PG
Cam Bennerman and Engin Atsur were the only two players State actually got from those two recruiting classes.
VaWolf82KeymasterI doubt we’ll get either of those two high profile guys, and I think the staff knows that. So I hope there is other activity going on of which we are unaware, and not just focus on next year.
This is a tough line to walk. Do you throw away scholarships just to get bodies? That didn’t work out too well for State or Herb when he had four transfers out of six scholarships given out over a two-year period. Obviously, empty spots on the bench might not work out any better.
Normally, I would say that this is the time to take some chances on potential diamonds in the rough that would be willing to work and wait for playing time. But I’m just not sure that there are many kids these days that fit this description.
VaWolf82KeymasterA salary of >$3M/year would put Marshall in the top 10 of coaching salaries…making him a very big fish in a small pond. But even during the season, he said that he wouldn’t leave WSU for a middle of the pack team from a power conference. So it sounds/looks like the only thing that MIGHT interest him would be if one of the current blue-blood schools had a coaching vacancy.

VaWolf82KeymasterMarshall parlays Alabama interest into pay raise at Wichita State
Marshall’s contract has been enhanced for the third straight year, this time from $1.75 million to in excess of $3 million per year.
I guess this means that he isn’t interested in Texas either…or that Texas isn’t interested in him.
