If the reports of an interview with Bubba last night are correct, and they get punished under the new penalty matrix they are looking at 3-4 years with no postseason
Pat Forde’s article at yahoo says that the “old” penalty matrix would be used because of when the allegations occurred. (Note that I haven’t read enough about new vs old to even have an opinion yet.)
VaWolf82KeymasterPat Forde’s take:
Did the NCAA enforcement staff give the COI a big enough hammer to smash the sacred cow, UNC men’s basketball? Or will Roy Williams’ program continue to avoid substantial damage from an academic scandal that has scorched a path through the school?
We don’t know. [Taken out of context, but accurately summarizes the article]
I don’t always like Forde’s stuff, but this one is surprisingly well balanced.
VaWolf82KeymasterFrom the CBS article, the only sport mentioned was women’s basketball. Unless something has been left out, I see no reason for State fans to celebrate.
VaWolf82KeymasterWell that certainly sucked
VaWolf82KeymasterMiami up 3TD’s to one FG
VaWolf82KeymasterIf that isn’t enough, then I just don’t know what to say.
05/29/2015 at 12:01 PM in reply to: ACC Basketball: Charlotte transfer Torin Dorn considering N.C. State, Texas, Mia #86670VaWolf82KeymasterHe’ll have three years of eligibility remaining after sitting out the 2015-16 season, and while he can’t do anything for the Pack’s guard shortage this year, he’d be a nice backcourt piece to have down the road.
VaWolf82KeymasterJust say “no” to a night game in Jacksonville. I still remember attempting to watch the Gator Bowl through the fog.
VaWolf82KeymasterSome previous Memorial Day entries:
VaWolf82KeymasterThe strong finish was at least partially aided by a weaker schedule to finish the season. In any event, next season is always a new team and we’ll see what we see. Right now the important thing is for the coaches to use the finish to take a big step forward in recruiting.
VaWolf82KeymasterNow anything can still happen even with a signed LOI
The number of bad things that could happen after signing a LOI is extremely limited.
VaWolf82KeymasterNo.
In the space of those 24 hrs. Gottfried lost a 5 star that he never had in the first place, and he got a verbal from a “rising star?”You left out the reason for the article…the “rising star” may bolt to Kentucky.
VaWolf82Keymasterbut overall it feels like Gott has done a great job.
This is where personal evaluation scales come into play.
Good job?
Absolutely!Great job?
Nope04/29/2015 at 12:44 PM in reply to: The last 24 hours haven’t been stellar for Mark Gottfried #85878VaWolf82KeymasterLike it or not, it [the title] reflects negatively on Gott and thus on the basketball program.
Is the title accurate? I think that it is and thus any “reflection” is accurate as well.
If you think that the title is inaccurate, then maybe you could explain why.
VaWolf82KeymasterHowever, the same understanding is expected to be displayed by the Mods.
Absolutely.
As rye has quite elegantly elucidated, the battle lines are slowly but surely being drawn. Some have already given up hope and others refuse to acknowledge that any issues exist. Disagreeing without rancor is a difficult line to walk. But navigating that thin line should be the goal of any intelligent conversation…and I’m not really interested in participating in anything less.
Within about six months of him being forced to retire, I had the “pleasure” of getting screamed at by Admiral Hyman G. Rickover. He was a controversial figure, but absolutely nailed it with his definition of responsibility.
“Responsibility is a unique concept… You may share it with others, but your portion is not diminished. You may delegate it, but it is still with you… If responsibility is rightfully yours, no evasion, or ignorance or passing the blame can shift the burden to someone else. Unless you can point your finger at the man who is responsible when something goes wrong, then you have never had anyone really responsible.”
Many discussions run aground because there is no common ground on exactly what to hold the coach responsible for. But for me, this is quite simple. The good and the bad from any college program begins and ends with the head coach. He/she gets credit/blame for wins/losses, running a clean program, etc. He/she does not deserve any “credit” for finishing second in a recruiting battle. In recruiting, second place is merely the last loser. Winning a recruiting battle is “good”…but doesn’t mean anything until it translates into wins/losses. Transfers and transfer rates might be interesting to track, but doesn’t necessarily mean anything in the larger context. Just like signing three McD AA in the same recruiting class didn’t really pay huge dividends for State.
In the larger context, all stats should be used to explain the final score/record. If your “data” doesn’t do that, it might be interesting to discuss but it doesn’t really mean anything. If we focus our conversation on meaningful facts/observations, then it might be easier to walk the line between disagreement and being disagreeable.
BTW…for the life of me, I can’t figure out why anyone would be offended by the thread title. Is anyone saying that Gottfried had a “good 24 hours”?
VaWolf82KeymasterLet me remind everyone that dissenting opinions are not discouraged…while personal attacks are not acceptable. If you disagree with someone’s opinions/conclusions address those without attacking the individual.
Whining about the mods is also frowned upon and I cleaned up several of those.
VaWolf82Keymaster#3 on the Draft Loser’s List
3. NC State: All the elements were in place for a special 2015-16 campaign for NC State until its leading scorer made an unexpected decision. Trevor Lacey opted to forgo his final season with the Wolfpack and enter the NBA draft even though there is probably a better chance he goes unselected than that he is taken in the second round. The departure of Lacey will force returning starter Cat Barber and West Virginia transfer Terry Henderson to handle most of NC State’s perimeter scoring. That duo and a solid frontcourt can take the Wolfpack back to the NCAA tournament, but a preseason top 20 ranking is probably no longer realistic, nor is contending for the ACC title. Lacey has received criticism for his decision, but he’ll turn 24 in October, young by real-life standards but not for a basketball prospect. Another year in college would mean forfeiting another year of earning potential, something a lot tougher to do at 24 than at 19 or 20.
VaWolf82KeymasterVaWolf82KeymasterTo the best of my memory, BJD was one of the first (if not the first) to predict that Amato would flame out at State. I distinctly remember hoping that the issues that BJD raised would “work themselves out”. Unfortunately that experience just reinforced the conclusion that hope is not a plan.
VaWolf82KeymasterJust because he has no 5 stars lined up for next season, at this point, does not mean the sky is falling.
I didn’t see anyone say that the sky was falling. Recruiting has been trending down ever since the class with Purvis and Warren….all the way down to zero freshman (so far) for next year. While that doesn’t mean that the sky is falling, it is certainly reason to be concerned.
BTW, Malik Newman chose MSU as expected:
VaWolf82KeymasterWhat do the last two coaching searches tell you about the desirability of the NC State job?
but I think our two rivals to the west have as much impact on attracting a coach as anything.
Possibly, but only if every top coach is either completely satisfied where they are at OR they are complete f****** idiots. On a national level, every coach that has ambitions of a final four (or more) has to compete against nationally ranked programs and every power conference has consistent top programs. To think that Raleigh’s distance in miles from two of them is a significant detriment doesn’t make any sense and is just a cop out.
VaWolf82KeymasterWhere I AM complaining is when people run down the job to support their argument.
I didn’t see this, but let’s assume that you are correct. What do the last two coaching searches tell you about the desirability of the NC State job?
There are extenuating circumstances in both searches, but the overall conclusion that I draw is that the job is not seen as desirable. I don’t like that conclusion, but I don’t see any evidence for any other conclusion.
VaWolf82KeymasterThe 2014-15 Wolfpack were probably the best defensive team of Gottfried’s tenure, which isn’t saying a whole lot.
I had to laugh at this and flash back to 1.21JW’s work.
VaWolf82KeymasterMe
You’re welcome.VaWolf82KeymasterAnother like that and someone is going have to show me how to do more than just close down the stupidity.
