    This was the breakout year…

I never understood why so many people were expecting this year to be something special. But one thing that I have learned is that it serves no purpose to argue pre-season opinions.

Thanks for this update…I would have never thought to look in the TV listings for a game against ODU. According to the on-line TV listings, I’ll get the game. It probably doesn’t hurt that I live in Central VA and about 200 miles from ODU.

Most of the “good” numbers are pretty worthless (with the obvious exception of touchback/KO). But the “bad” numbers illustrate real areas of concern…like sacks allowed.

    Punting
    A.J. Cole: 4 punts, 37.8 avg, long of 45, 2 inside 20yd line

    Kickoffs
Jackson Maples: 7 KO, 65.0 avg, 6 touchbacks

Considering the competition, these are two of the most useful stats.

Season-opening games will have NO measurable impact on State’s FB program. Season-ending games are a different story.

Only thing I would like to see differently is for us to play unc-g @ Greensboro…. It would make a huge difference rpi wise.

It would make a big difference when the game was played in Dec, but it won’t be that significant by the end of the year.

    Assumptions:
    2-2 neutral + 15-4 home + 7-4 road

    Adjust Winning Percentage:
Those assumed results would give an adjusted winning % of 0.6820
Moving UNC-G win to neutral site improves adjusted winning % to 0.6848
If it counts as a road game, winning % to 0.6886

    RPI Formula:
    RPI = (WP * 0.25) + (OWP * 0.50) + (OOWP * 0.25)
    WP = Adjusted winning percentage
    OWP = Opponents’ winning percentage
OOWP = Opponents’ opponents’ winning percentage

If I’ve done the math correctly, that difference might mean a spot or two in RPI rankings. That’s probably not enough difference to get Debbie to give up the lost revenue.

With State’s weak OOC schedule, we won’t know much for a while.

Don’t the players vote on which uniforms they are going to wear? (or did I dream that?)

I’ll go with 8-4 with losses to FSU, Clemson, Lville and Va Tech.

I agree, though the odds of beating L’ville and VT are not terrible.

Predictions? I tend to stay away from them. But I would pick 8 wins if forced to guess.

If you’re looking for something to get amped for the season, I recommend the second half of the 2008 UNC/State game:

Well, I just discovered that you can only praise the team …

No what you discovered is that we like to keep the comments focused on the topic of the entry. We don’t spend time putting together an entry and then allow the comments to address anything under the world. Shad’s punishment was being discussed in the “A Couple of Football Notes” thread and has absolutely zero relevance to a discussion on memorable non-conference games.

Good Read Ruffles. The @Texas Tech game with Chuck and TA was one I enjoyed as well.

Good call on one that fits in the 20 year time frame.

54 yd FG by Penn State to win as time expires.
I still have scars from that one.

Beating Penn St in Happy Valley when Johnny Evans was the QB. I wasn’t there, but my uncle that was told the story of Evans’ quick kick about 100 times (and I didn’t get to see him that often).

TD catch by Peebles in an untimed down against South Carolina.

    1. There aren’t enough quality NFL QBs for each team to have one. Teams that have one have little choice but to pay market value to keep them, except in very rare situations where two get paired on one team, enabling the team to let the veteran go (e.g., Brees and Rivers, Favre and Rodgers, Montana and Young). The alternative is typically to go through an extended period of years with poor to mediocre QB play, which significantly raises the odds of a losing record over that lengthy period.

If there is an NFL GM that doesn’t understand this, he won’t have a job for long.

The other thing that usually doesn’t get discussed is that the team often goes back to the QB in subsequent years to redo his contract to help out with cap room.

My brother was at State during the EK era and got my parents tickets for the infamous USuC game with a TD to Peebles on an untimed down. My parents still talk about that game. Sad to read about his current struggles.

^ AMEN. A great team, with a great (albeit really f-cking QUIET) leader in Cat. As long as their balls all drop quickly, I like our odds of breaking the title drought and winning the league.

YES, I DAMNED WELL SAID IT.

I hate it when regular posters have their accounts hacked.

    Here’s a pretty good preview:

    http://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2015/6/12/8761427/north-carolina-state-football-2015-preview-schedule-roster

But even a good preview can contain a head scratcher or two:

There was no clear reason for the [2014] midseason funk.

Oh Really? Playing FSU, Clemson, and Louisville over a four-game scratch doesn’t count as a clear reason?

I’m interested in seeing how the two lines do:

Two new starting [offensive] tackles will have to get acclimated on the offensive line, which is a major concern.

Defensive end Mike Rose and defensive tackles Justin Jones, B.J. Hill, Kenton Gibbs and Monty Nelson all got valuable reps last season and will help offset the loss of seniors T.Y. McGill, Thomas Teal and Art Norman. Sophomore Kentavius Street, the prize of his recruiting class in 2014, will get more snaps inside this season, while sophomore Bradley Chubb has been moved from linebacker to end.

I didn’t see any player’s names that weren’t brought up the first time around. So it appears that this article just defines how big a hole that Hawkins has dug for himself. Which reminds me, does anyone know what happened to the drug charges in Georgia(?) against Hawkins?

The significance in the Director’s Cup Standings is that it was another indication that Jed didn’t have any hard, meaningful standards for the athletic dept as a whole OR the two sports that most fans care about. Clearly that is no longer the case.

The open issue right now is how “good” do the two main sports have to be to qualify as “good enough”. But since the overall standards are higher, then there is at least reason for optimism that football and basketball will be held to higher standards moving forward.

But as I move into the realm of pure speculation, two S-16’s in four years probably falls into the “good enough” category.

The UNCheat men’s basketball team brings in a considerable amount of revenue for the university and the NCAA.

This is simply not true. The NCAA gets most of its money from selling the TV rights to the NCAA tournament.

Did you see any articles detailing the reduced viewership when Doherty was at UNC? I sure didn’t.

Hopefully FB will follow suit as the program continues to improved.

I’m not going to guess on what future FB schedules will look like, but the dynamics are completely different between FB and BB. The OOC games are clearly valuable in BB (as I’ve droned on about for the last decade). But they are completely worthless in FB for the vast, vast majority of schools.

I realize that the value of OOC FB games matters to season-ticket holders…but I’m skeptical that this concern ever enters the picture.

You know what else I’m in favor of? Recruiting guys and having them stick around for 4 years.

When I was first driving, gas was $0.68/gal. Those days are gone forever…and so are the days of top recruits staying in college for four years.

The entire UNC debacle would appear to significantly weaken the NCAA’s position that college athletes are adequately compensated by the education that they receive. If the NCAA let’s UNC skate, then that position would only get worse.

Bottom Line: This entire situation gives the NCAA an opportunity to show how serious they are about giving athletes a real education…and the consequences of short-changing the educational benefits. In the end, we’ll see what we see.
