    It was always a real possibility that the B-12 would eat their own. I’m still pulling for the Cowboys.

    With Ohio St going down, a one-loss Oklahoma team will definitely be in the playoff discussion. Head to head, I suspect that a one-loss Oklahoma would have a better resume than ND.

    I would guess that a one-loss Ohio St that doesn’t play in the B-10 championship game is out of consideration.

    My two immutable facts of recruiting:

    – No one knows/understands what goes in the minds of high school kids.
    – Some “can’t miss” kids do.

    That’s why I don’t pay much attention to recruiting. I’m happy when State signs highly-rated kids. But I don’t get excited until I see them do something special at State.

    When I wore a younger man’s clothes I followed recruiting. And I learned my lesson.

    Following recruiting is a frustrating and time-wasting proposition.

    Plantar fasciitis, by definition, is microtears in the tissue, which connects the heel to the base of the toes. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport tweeted something slightly different than Schefter, along the lines that Manning caused further aggravation to his foot on Sunday:

    As Schefter noted in a subsequent tweet, partial tears are very painful. Manning’s brother Eli played the 2009 season with a fully-torn plantar fascia, but that is not as uncomfortable.

    Generally, treatment for a torn plantar fascia is simply rest to let the microtears heal.

    A grand total of 6 teams in each conference have records at or above .500. This is the time of year where the large majority of NFL games are not worth watching….which I’m used to since I’m in the Redskins coverage area.

    To claim that State has recently had some great years, you first have to redefine “great”.

    Progress? You gotta know what you’re looking at to see it, or what you don’t see to know it’s not there. Any 6 year old can do an analysis of the single metric of W’s vs L’s.

    And any idiot with a keyboard can claim that they see progress and predict future success based on virtually nothing. I’m not saying that you are wrong about progress, but if you use the dumpster fire that DD took over as your starting point, then you have set the bar pretty low. But in the final analysis, arguments about “progress” are pretty meaningless because “progress” without real “success” is not worth much. Herb certainly made progress over the Les years, but his progress hit a fairly low ceiling.

    And for the claim that State has had periods of “great” years, how many years has State had more than 5 conference wins over the last two decades? I think the answer is “O”, which pretty much says that State HAS NOT had any great years. IMO, the year with the victory over ND in the Gator Bowl is the best year we’ve had since Sheridan….and I believe State finished fourth in the conference that year and jumped over two teams (UVA, GT?, UMD) to get that bowl bid.

    PS. They keep score for a reason. In the end, wins and losses is all that really maters.

    If the B12 doesn’t have an undefeated team, then ND will get the fourth spot if they win out. Go Stanford!!!

    While I despise ND, the bright side if they win out is that they won’t be taking one of the ACC’s bowl games.

    State fans have insisted that progress/improvement was being made as long as I’ve been on the internet. I’m not saying that they are wrong now, just saying that I’ve heard the claims before and don’t have much to show for all of the alleged improvement.

    Real improvement will produce meaningful wins. We ain’t there yet.

    I’m sorry, but wins over BC (3-7), WF (3-6), Troy, S. Alabama, ODU, and E. Kentucky don’t show me anything. I’m not screaming for anyone’s head, but you have to beat someone before I start pointing at “progress”.

    A comparison to Herb’s teams/records is right on point. He could wipe up the bottom of the conference, hold his own against the rest of the muddled middle, but had damned few wins against the top of the conference.

    In the end, good teams prove that they are good by beating other good teams. State hasn’t accomplished that yet.

    Dan Wetzel writes for yahoo.sports and attacked the BCS system at every opportunity, generally with as few facts as humanly possible. Now that we have a playoff that he always argued for, he is taking pot shots at the selection committee for their mid-season rankings. His choice of wronged teams? Memphis of course. (oops!)

    I would quote some key lines from his rambling attack….but it rambles so much that you have to read the whole thing to see how disjointed it is. It appears that Wetzel has developed his shtick…he is going to attack whatever process college football uses and champion the underdog no matter what. Several years ago, an undefeated Hawaii was “overlooked” for the BCS championship game and was utterly destroyed in the Sugar Bowl. I dread the thought of what idiots like Wetzel will be spewing when an undefeated team with no real resume is left out of the playoffs.

    But buried in his drivel, Wetzel does have one point worth discussing. He doesn’t want mid-season rankings released because there are so many key games left to play. For me, the mid-season rankings don’t mean a whole lot, but they are worth releasing because it gives a static target for people to comment on. If the committee members bother to read the commentaries that will follow every week, there is at least a faint possibility that they may hear/read something that they haven’t thought of. If you’re more concerned with “getting it right”, than in just “being right”, then open discussion can only improve the process.

    A whopping 5% of major league baseball players go the college route.

    Baseball’s extensive minor league system makes a comparison to leaving for NBA meaningless.

    Football players have to wait for three years after high school to go to the NFL. So there’s every reason to think that a similar system could work for BB.

    The Fibonacci Sequence is the series of numbers: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, … The next number is found by adding up the two numbers before it. The 2 is found by adding the two numbers before it (1+1)

    Just for kicks, I copied this ranking down for review on the Jan 1 entry where I look at RPI at the end of the pre-season.

    Surely no one can be surprised whenever cbs puts up another troll piece. I’m sure that Doyel has taught them well.

    PS – according to wikipedia, doyel left cbs for the indy star. With Doyel and Goodman gone, if they got rid of Parrish, cbs might be close to troll free.

    we have not been able to gameplan or “find an extra gear” elsewhere to get around (like we did late last year).

    Some if not most of the “extra gear” at the end of last year can be traced to a drop off in competition from the middle of the season. Here’s how last season ended according to Sagarin (noting that State’s Final Ranking was 48).
