For whatever reasons the A list of candidates did not pan out.

Yet people insist that State’s program isn’t viewed negatively.

^Jeebus folks…the basketball program and job is not viewed in a negative light.

As far as I can tell, this is wishful thinking. Even if you blame the insanity of Fowler’s coaching search totally on his incompetence, Yow’s search wasn’t pleasant either.

No hire is “can’t miss”….because what makes a midmajor coach great may not translate to the ACC

The example I always use is Pete Gillen. Skip Prosser, Thad Matta, and Sean Miller all moved up from Xavier and succeeded while Pete did not. Here is a little blurb from wikipedia:

From 1985 to 1994, Gillen compiled a 202–75 record, including the program’s first five wins in the NCAA Tournament. The Musketeers advanced to the NCAA Tournament in six of Gillen’s nine years at the helm. In 1990, Xavier beat Kansas State and future Big East colleagues Georgetown to advance to the program’s first Sweet Sixteen

I agree that when State next needs a basketball coach, that we should look at head coaches that were successful at lower levels. However, the past two coaching searches have shown that for whatever reason, State is not viewed as a desirable destination. So not only is there no such thing as “can’t miss”, there is no reason to think that State will have their pick from the lower levels.

I don’t post here much, but I do check and read the posts here every day. This site is my go-to for all things NC State. But I’ll have to say, lately, it has been waning. Could be the disappointing football season, disappointing start in basketball season, or all the above.

I don’t record and analyze the site statistics, but the site visits are about as good as they’ve ever been. The commenting is down and I suspect that you’ve nailed the reason for the reduced chatter…the results on the field/court aren’t producing anything that people want to discuss.

On the former though, it’s hard to beat good teams when the conference is weak.

I agree that #4 is historically weak for the ACC, but there are still six teams in the RPI Top 30 and another 5 in the bubble zone. Thus there are plenty of opportunities for the key wins needed for an at-large bid…but only if you’re good enough to earn them.

This whole issue looks like one where quantity makes up for reduced average quality.

I don’t agree with the premise that conference RPI doesn’t matter. It matters because it talks about the collective strength of schedule of the conference play, the ability for a conference win to be a good win, and the ability for a conference loss to become a bad one.

While I never said that conference RPI doesn’t matter, it doesn’t matter much. As I pointed out in the RPI section, your opponents winning percentage and your opponents’ opponents’ winning percentage directly contribute to your RPI calculation. So conference strength matters, but you have to remember that even if the ACC is “weak” by historical standards, it is still going to be stronger than 30+ other conferences (currently ranked 4th by realtime RPI).

I never documented a rough calculation I did last year when I tried to figure out how much of the conference teams contribute to the overall SOS. It seems that something like 40% of the winning percentages rolled into SOS come from the conference you play in. The stronger the conference, the more that strength will add to your RPI.

But you won’t make the NCAAT just by playing in a tough conference. What matters is WHO you beat…and a team that lost to Bill & Mary along with a weak VT team isn’t likely to care much about SOS, conference SOS, or pretty much anything else come March.

I’d be willing to bet that if Henderson doesn’t get hurt, this team is 12-2 and we’re not talking about firing anyone. Doesn’t make the situation any better, just something to consider.

Meaningless speculation doesn’t give me anything to consider,

I’ve seen a comment in one of the forum threads predicting that ACC teams will go to a box and 1 to stop Cat. I would think that a zone would be more likely. We pretty much know what Gott has, so let’s see what Buzz rolls out….

Yesterday won’t rank very high on my list of New Year’s Days.

    Yesterday’s bowl scores: 45-6; 44-28; 41-7; 45-16; 48-20 -> Not a single decent game

Then there is the depressing conclusion from this entry that State could easily be headed for a Tuesday game in the ACCT.

Records and performance absolutely matter, regardless of the reason(s) for the lack of performance. You cannot simply excuse it away.

You must be new around here. 🙂

I forgot to mention that if you’re playing for the NIT, then having the bottom teams at home will help you get the wins you need for that tourney.

do we think NC State is in a good place right now to be in the market for a coaching search (when we have a “B+” in hand)?

It doesn’t really matter what “we” think. The coaching fraternity has answered it pretty plainly during the last two BB coaching searches. Right or wrong, NC State is not considered a desirable coaching destination. We can speculate about the reasons, but there is no reason to think that the overall opinion of State has changed.

MG’s not to the level of HWSNBN, Amato, or TOB. He’s still working extremely hard, and creatively. He’s not burning bridges or alienating people that would create a “clear and present danger” if something isn’t done to staunch the bleeding immediately.

Based on the last two coaching searches, there is absolutely no reason to think that State could do better right now.

Tony Haynes called State a “big-time opponent” for High Point. I just wish that statement was based on the current State team.

Hate for the kid but at this point would be considering asking for a medical redshirt perhaps if available.

From what I’ve read in the past, it’s not possible to get a sixth year when kids lose a year due to sitting out after a transfer. The only way that I know of to get a sixth year, is to lose two years to injuries.

I don’t understand why anyone is complaining about last years bowl:
    – Week in Charlotte vs week in St Petersburg for the team
    – Ass kicking in Charlotte vs win in St Pete
    – Shallow reporting turned a scheduling quirk with winning streak against weak teams into a boost for recruiting

I don’t see how last year and the bowl could have turned out better.

I suspect that Clemson will stay #1, which would leave the only decision as who would be #4. I would pick MSU as #4, but won’t get worked up no matter how it shakes out.

There will be deviations, but after 14 years of coaching there’s a definite track record…

Agree completely and I still have an e-mail that I sent to a couple of people after the Gott hire was announced. But in any event, this reminded me of several famous quotes:
