I didn’t think about the Dance Card until just now. Here’s their analysis of the ACC teams going through Sunday’s games. Later in the season, they will switch to a daily update.

Not random at all. Keep your comments focused on the posts and not the posters themselves. I acted before another thread fell apart.
VaWolf82KeymasterI’ve been wondering if it’s worth the effort for the few people that read them.
Can you include an “I read this” checkbox/counter feature? I’m one of those who reads but does not always reply.
There’s a stats widget that shows how many times the article on the main page has been opened and another counter for how many times the forum thread has been opened. This week’s readership was about half of a “normal” entry from last year. I’m guessing that drop-off is being driven by a growing apathy about the basketball season.
Either that or people are getting tired of my tables and graphs….no that couldn’t be it. 😉
VaWolf82KeymasterFun day in what has been a disappointing season. Hope there are a few more like this one.
VaWolf82KeymasterSyracuse and Clemson should probably move up one level.
Not unreasonable if you use an “eyeball” test. I’m using criteria derived from my Selection Sunday analysis done a number of years ago and refined slightly over time.
SYR has a losing conference record. That is not necessarily a crippling issue, but one that would require a significant ACCT win to overcome if we were at the end of the year. Plus their RPI ranking is in the range that you can expect some teams to get passed over every year.
Clemson’s RPI ranking is worse than any that have ever received an at-large bid to the NCAAT.
People like Lunardi and Palm evaluate the NCAAT resumes from all across the country (or at least claim to). Then they try to pick the teams with the best resume and fill a preliminary tournament bracket. I have neither the time nor interest to attempt my own total analysis. I just use the end-of-the year criteria to judge the work-in-progress of the ACC season. My method is not perfect by any means, but it provides a fixed measuring stick to evaluate the ACC teams with no speculation about future results required.
VaWolf82KeymasterWhat if they gave a blog and nobody came?
That’s a pretty good title for my weekly ACC Updates. I’ve been wondering if it’s worth the effort for the few people that read them.
VaWolf82KeymasterHaha…send the kid to Wake Tech and party like it’s 1979.
Been there, done that, that year
VaWolf82KeymasterPlus, It’s tough to call it rebuilding when you only have one recruit.
VaWolf82KeymasterMore like this:
VaWolf82KeymasterThe Pitt game showed our capabilities
Yeah, when the opponent shoots 25% in the first half. I think that the GT game is more representative of the team’s capabilities.
VaWolf82KeymasterIt appeared we were improving
I missed that. It must not have lasted long.
VaWolf82KeymasterVT only down 4 to L’ville (top 25 team). State getting blown out at home by a fellow 1-win ACC team.
The only good news is that the VT game got the split coverage here in VA. Interestingly enough, the UVA game wasn’t broadcast here last night.
VaWolf82KeymasterIf this year turns out to be just a blip for Gott, then his results won’t be substantially different from Brey’s
In case the formatting jumbles to mush, I tried to copy/paste his record from wikipedia.

I’ll give you Tony Bennett at UVa, but I would have to look at multiple years before I would agree that the others are indeed building programs versus a one-year peak….I simply don’t follow much outside the ACC. Marshall and Witchita St are another example, but I discount accomplishments at the mid-major level.
Take Larranaga (who I have a great deal of respect for)…who has won the ACCT while at Miami. That’s great, but that was also the only year that Miami has went to the NCAAT while he’s been there. So at best, you could say that he is working at building a program; along with having another great year.
But even if I agree that some coaches can indeed build programs, is there anything in Gott’s resume to make you think that he can be one at NC State?
VaWolf82KeymasterIn theory a coach is building to something. Once he purges the players he did not recruit, he is dealing with what he recruited so he should be moving forward not regressing by year 5.
Then why did Roy go 5-11 in conference in year 9 or 10? There is no little/no team building in college basketball these days. The player turnover is so high that you have to be in constant reloading mode….where Gott failed miserably this year. (Don’t even start about recruiting more 4-year guys and coaching them up. That isn’t what Gott is doing and is probably not even something he can do.)
But what a coach IS building is his and the school’s brand and reputation. No one is concerned when Roy or K have an off year because of the confidence that they will reload and be as tough as ever next year. I’m not nearly as confident in Gott and I don’t know how he and State are viewed on the recruiting circuit.
I don’t follow recruiting closely, but I scan the recruiting thread on the monkey board and look at the individual and class rankings (which isn’t much, but all we have). If you look at Gott’s recruiting rankings they have been trending downward the last several years. With the exception of what most are considering a one and done PG, I don’t see any positive buzz indicating that State’s holes will be filled next year.
So I’m not worried about a down year. I’m worried that Gott is not going to be able to bring in enough good players to stop the bleeding after just one year.
VaWolf82KeymasterYear 5 and….
Nitpick Alert:
The length of time at a school has little impact on whether or not a coach/team is going to have a bad year. For instance, in 2010 UNC went 5-11 in conference.
VaWolf82KeymasterI just looked at the yahoo sports app (highly recommended) and saw that Pitt visits Tiger Town tomorrow (or actually Greenville this year). Another chance for Clemson to show what they’re made of.
VaWolf82KeymasterDon’t knock it just because you don’t like the findings.
You must be new around here. 🙂
That little tendency goes all the way back to the glory days of the HSSS.VaWolf82KeymasterIIRC, The bottom 6 teams have had a losing conference record the last two updates. The big difference between RPI standings and conference standings are VT and Clemson. I expect VT to fall back, but I don’t know what to expect out of Clemson. Three big wins and they were hanging tight in C’ville.
As with most things, time will tell.
VaWolf82KeymasterIf Gott did any of those three things, then I would apologize for this:
Who among is truly and totally constrained by their past?
Any coach with a decade or more experience has an established track record at that level. That record doesn’t establish absolute min’s and max’s but does a pretty good job of defining the mean/average. If you’re happy with that average, then great. If not, don’t hold your breath hoping for dramatic improvement.
On a more analytical level, 1.21JW spent alot of time and effort comparing Gott’s teams to those that make various levels of achievement in the NCAAT. Bottom line, Gott’s teams don’t play good enough defense to expect much more than what he’s accomplished in the past.
That doesn’t mean that he couldn’t come out of no-where like UNLV did with Augmen, Johnson, and Anthony. But until he recruits three NBA-quality players on the same team, it’s not likely to happen. And frankly, the recruiting over the last year or so doesn’t lead me to think that he’s going to build up enough talent any time soon.
What would I do if I were Yow? Get him to bring in an assistant from a team noted for defense and try to shore up the play on that end of the court.
VaWolf82KeymasterThis is the start of the worst two weeks of the year to watch SportsCenter. They stretch a total of about 30 minutes of worth-while news into several hours EVERY DAY.
I didn’t get to see the Broncos play all that much this year, but that was really impressive defensive performance yesterday. And speaking of impressive, Carolina did pretty much whatever they wanted to do on offense.
VaWolf82KeymasterI expect a full on apology from many this time next year, but I’m sure that won’t happen unless we’re undefeated and win each game by 50.
So where do you think State will be this time next year?
I’ll happily give an apology right after Gott wins the ACC regular season, ACCT, or makes a Final Four.
VaWolf82KeymasterUnfortunately, the conversation has dropped down to monkey board standards. It’s time for entries to start disappearing.
Address the post and not the poster.
VaWolf82KeymasterNor do I want Yow performing another coaching search.
Football search was pretty painless, but I couldn’t stand another basketball coaching search. Her’s was nearly as painful as Fowlup’s.
VaWolf82KeymasterThe number of people who want to fire Gott is extremely small. The real question is how many people think that Gott can move state into contention for the top of the ACC and something beyond the S-16?
