It was 23-10 State. Now it’s 38-29 UNC. I’ll let someone else do the depressing math on the delta.

have you forgotten where we were last year? On the edge of competing for an ACC and a national championship, and we would have only been better this year.

10-8 in conference and tied for 6th place along with a loss on Thursday in the ACCT is not on the “edge” of anything significant. The Sweet 16 was a pleasant surprise, nothing more.

Va? We talkin’ about the deep problems that got State to the brink of Elite 8,two outta 5?

Come on CD, I know you are not one to play in the world of “IF”. I suspect that the consistently suspect defense will keep Gott from getting any closer to the brink…and if the recruiting doesn’t improve, he won’t get that close again.

I don’t know who you’re talking about, but here are a few questions:

Who is responsible for recruiting him?
Who is responsible for teaching defense?
Who is responsible for in-game corrections and instruction?
Who is responsible for replacing a player that doesn’t perform?

As Rick said, the problem goes much deeper than the players on this team.

I wish that the discussion would switch from blame to responsibility. There are a lot of bad things that happen that are not necessarily the coach’s fault. But the success/failure of the program is the coach’s responsibility.

A win would still have us in position for a possible tourney bid.

The difference between no chance and some chance, because the roster goes from doomed to merely “fragile” in its construction.

Fragile…I like this description. Under the best of circumstances, this team was always going to lose some games that it shouldn’t or let victory slip from its grasp several times…turned ankle, flu, foul trouble….something was always going to happen. That’s why I was never optimistic about this season. There were simply too many ways for it to jump the rails.

Think of it as a Monte Carlo simulation.

BJD knocking it out of the park today.

I truly dont get where people are thinking Henderson is some sort of savior for the program or team.

It’s really not that complicated. People looking for excuses generally grab the first one that they find.

It’s a toss-up which is more frequent on State message boards….blame-storming (everything but the coach), coach bashing, or reasons to WTNY. Though this year, WTNY died about one month into the FB season.

Sometimes in life, you win when you shouldn’t and sometimes you lose when you shouldn’t…
Life ain’t all numbers and it’s certainly not all black and white.

Our BBall TEAM is not Coached by a Fool.

Sure, there’s data scatter in the numbers. But the numbers are what they are. If you’re happy with them, great. If you’re not, but expecting great improvement…then I don’t know what to say. For me….I’m not going to man the trenches nor join the pitchfork brigade.

No one said he was a fool. The open question is he a good-enough coach.

Like to see if we get Henderson, if we have a run in us. Unlikely, but not impossible.

It’s so close to impossible that it would be hard to tell the difference. This team is not one player away from being something special.

Va, you take great care in generalizing the spinmeister movement…

No weight given here or given there. Actual facts are often ignored by “fans.”

You don’t know how much it pains me to me be politically correct. 20 years ago (maybe even 10 years ago), I wouldn’t have bothered.

People who pick their facts to suit their theories disgust/frustrate me at work and on message boards. The facts are what they are and in most situations, we the fans don’t have all of the pertinent ones. But the final results on the score board are incontrovertible. I will never understand how people manage to ignore the scores or W/L records when interpreting current “facts” or making future predictions.

The past doesn’t always predict the future. But only a fool ignores lessons learned in the past.

…you’re going up against better competition than you did in Tuscaloosa, and the results are not remotely close to good. You played on the margins with some really good personnel, and now the personnel is not up to par, nor are the results. That’s it. Any other spin is just that, a spin…

The only quibble that I would have is that the results before this disastrous season were positive steps in the right direction. Not where I want to be, but at least moving forward.

And yes, the spinmeisters always manage to avoid inconvenient truths.

VaWolf: Do we still have over 12k lifetime rights holders? I’d be surprised if that were the case.

    Why would you be surprised?

You need to talk to one of the Wolfpack Club movers/shakers if you want definitive numbers. But I just checked the attendance numbers for last year and State ranked #12 nationwide. So I don’t see any reason to think that a significant number of people have walked away from LTRs.

I haven’t checked these numbers recently but even in the dark days of Sid, State still ranked in the Top 25.

When you sell more lifetime rights than Reynolds could ever hold, you’ve eliminated any chance that men’s basketball would ever return there.

If you look at the last two football and basketball searches, it’s very strange to me that both football searches went much, much better than either basketball search.

I don’t understand it, but it would be easy to speculate (as I do) that State’s football program is better thought of than the basketball program. There are other theories, but I’m going to stick with the simplest one baring additional info leaking out.

Hmmm. You got a breakdown on that non-rev stuff?

As apposed to say…oh, I don’t know…an indoor practice facility, and a new Luxor “jock” dorm, upgrades to Murphy?

It’s very hard to peel back the layers on athletic spending. Dave Glenn interviewed DY shortly after she was hired and she said she didn’t have a handle on the finances because a lot of money moves through the Wolfpack Club before it gets to the athletic dept.

However, there is some info available because schools have to file reports with the Federal Govt. This info is reported on a website called “Equity in Athletics”. Any time you see dollar amounts mentioned in an article, odds are that they used this website to get the info.

Having gone through the numbers several years ago, there are gaps big enough to drive an 18-wheeler through and not all schools report the information in the same way…but it’s pretty much all you or I can get to.

For the year ending June 2015, State reported Total Revenue minus Total Expenses as +$7M.

She has said it numerous times and I have heard her say it in person. She wants a top 25 program and all that comes with it.

Good point, but that brings up several more questions.
    – How long will she allow a coach to build their program and reach this goal?
    – How often are they expected to be in the Top-25?
    – If a coach reaches this goal and then falls back, how quickly will she act?

Side Note: As several other people have stated…I shudder at the thoughts of DY running another basketball coaching search.

The basic question goes back to the heart of the Great Herb Debate. Some people are happy with not being a laughing stock. Some people want alot more.

The legitimate question should be…how does Debbie define success/failure.

it’s also worth noting the Devils still have to play the Holes this month…
although they only play ONE TIME in Swoffy’s new and improved ACC….
which by all accounts is blaspheme…

Duke and UNC are defined rivals. They play Home/home every year.
Look at UNC/Duke schedules in the entry. This year they play on Feb 17 and March 5.

The Big 4 have been split up like this since the ACC went to 12 teams:
    Duke – UNC and WF
    UNC – Duke and State
    State – UNC and WF
    WF – State and Duke

Unlike some other “self-imposed” bans, which are somehow a university’s attempt to make their initial wrongdoing into some sort of altruistic move, this specific postseason ban has very direct and specific victims of the destruction left in the wake of the school’s decision.

The Cardinals feature two incredible talents in Damion Lee and Trey Lewis. Both are players who transferred to Louisville for the sole reason to compete in the NCAA Tournament. Without either guy, Louisville would have been returning zero double-digit scorers, as their leading returning bucket-maker averaged a whopping four points per game last season.

    Their reward? No postseason play.

I’ve watched probably the least amount of NCAA basketball in total in my lifetime.

5 years of Les + first 5 years of Herb. State was too painful to watch and watching other games just reminded me how much State sucked.
