Sendek, 53, stayed out of coaching this season, but he kept busy, traveling to watch coaches run practice all across the country.
VaWolf82KeymasterUVa’s last two losses looked eerily similar to me. Their offense shut down in the second half and they couldn’t get it going again.

VaWolf82KeymasterThe question is, what is our ceiling under Gottfried? Time will tell.
Here’s another question….Why should we expect Gott’s ceiling to be higher than anything he’s shown in his nearly 20 years as a head coach? That question gets even tougher if we factor in the high-rate of roster turnover in his years at State.
VaWolf82Keymaster“If it’s been said on this thread, then you should have quoted it.”
If you are that curious you should read the thread.
I have and you still haven’t quoted anyone.
VaWolf82KeymasterIf it’s been said on this thread, then you should have quoted it. The thing that stands out to me on this thread is the expectation that Gott only has one year to turn it around. I don’t know if DY will move that quick or not.
I don’t want to watch another dumpster fire of a season and I don’t want to watch DY lead another coaching search. I think that puts me in a special kind of Purgatory.
VaWolf82KeymasterFiring a coach after 1 bad season is not a way to build a top 25 program.
You might want to save that comment and post it in response to someone says to fire Gott now.
VaWolf82KeymasterShouldn’t we expect Woodson to understand this?
No. You’ve strung a whole series of assumptions together to reach a conclusion. If it’s time for Woodson to do anything, it’s time to talk to DY about what she’s thinking/planning.
VaWolf82KeymasterWe would be INSANE to give him more than next season.
I don’t know what DY is thinking, but we will gather the following additional info over the next 12 months:
-The completion of recruiting for this year….ie spring signings, transfers, grad transfers, JC players
-2016/2017 results on the court
-Fall recruiting signings for 17/18 season as well as any rumors for kids still in play.If the situation looks as dire 12 months from now as it does today; then it’s certainly time to make a move. AND we might be looking at turning over less to the new coach than any new hire since Case left.
VaWolf82KeymasterI know this formatting will suck, but here is Friedgen’s record at UMD:
2001… 10- 2
2002… 11- 3
2003… 10- 3
2004… 5- 6
2005… 5- 6
2006… 9- 4
2007… 6- 7
2008… 8- 5
2009… 2- 10EDIT
Oops, DY didn’t fire Friedgen and I left off his last year with a 9-4 record.DY was hired at State in June 2010. Here’s TOB’s record at State:
2007… 5- 7
2008… 6- 7
2009… 5- 7
2010… 9- 4
2011… 8- 5
2012… 7- 6IIRC, DY said something about recruiting fall-off with TOB. Or maybe it was just that recruiting one of the keys she was looking for in TOB’s replacement. In any event, there’s some data on DY’s patience level with losing.
VaWolf82KeymasterAnd you can’t have average-to-above average (or worse) attrition whilst being tight with scholarships. You’re left with no players.
You left out one key component. Gott’s recruiting has been tailing off since the Lewis/Purvis/Warren class. When you’re short-handed AND have lesser talent, you get a season like the one we just watched.
Whether Gott’s retention issues are average or worse-than-average doesn’t really matter. What matters is the quality of the team he is putting on the court and this year’s team was unacceptable. There was never any guarantee that next year would be markedly better, but now it could end up being BC-bad.
Don’t get lost in the forest because of all the trees. Recruiting is important. Retention is important. Coaching/strategy is important. But at the end of the day, results are the only thing that anyone remembers. So don’t focus so much on the individual pieces; focus on the results.
IMO, Bad results + bad recruiting = time for a new coach. Gott’s earned the right to try and turn this around. The open question is, how much time has he earned?
VaWolf82KeymasterAccording to dates in Wikipedia, DY hired the Fat Man.
VaWolf82KeymasterIMO he is now coaching/recruiting for his job, with one more year to accomplish something significant or else.
Maybe. I think that there are too many unknowns to say for sure just how hot his seat will be if State misses the NCAAT next year.
We know that Jed was quick to accept excuses instead of results. We know that Debbie eventually worked to remove both Friedgen and GW while she was at UMD. So DY is certainly no Jed, but we really don’t know the extent of her patience. Plus we don’t know her willingness to go through another BB coaching search so close to retirement.
It’s dangerous to make predictions about how someone you don’t know will react. But based on the various interviews I’ve seen/read, I would be surprised if her retirement (assuming that she plans on retiring at the end of her current contract) would enter into her decision making process.
So I wouldn’t be surprised to see her make a move if the 16/17 season was another dumpster fire and the recruiting not dramatically improve. I also wouldn’t be surprised if she gave Gott more time even if State doesn’t make the NCAAT next year (with the assumption that there’s bound to be some positive still left).
Note that I don’t want to watch more dumpster fires or DY lead another basketball search. But it’s beginning to look like I’ll have to watch one or the other.
VaWolf82KeymasterI tried to merge the Martin Twin thread with this one that covers all transfers, but couldn’t. It might be because I created the Twin thread under Basketball and this one was automatically created once the article was posted to the main page. In any event, I closed the Twin thread.
If you have something in the other thread that you were especially attached to, you can always repeat it here.
VaWolf82KeymasterI couldn’t figure out to merge this thread with the other one so I decided to close it. Since Abu may leave as well, we can discuss the Martin twins in the other thread.
VaWolf82KeymasterGott came with a history. To think that that his history wasn’t relevant was always more wishful thinking than sound logic.
VaWolf82KeymasterI have read nothing about the Martin Brothers transferring. Is there confirmation on that, and if that is the case. GOTT needs to go.
Go to pack pride. They have a statement from Gott.
VaWolf82KeymasterWhat are you taking about?
PS: You should really make an effort to insure that your first topic actually makes sense.
VaWolf82KeymasterParrish has an interesting take on the carousel….never stay any where long enough for the fans to get tired of you.
With a title like that, I’m surprised that he didn’t work around to Herb.
VaWolf82KeymasterTimely snippet from yahoo
Some Pitt fans – and, possibly, some administrators – can point to Dixon’s career trajectory and assert that there was reason for change. The old coaching axiom says that if you’re not getting better, you’re getting worse – and Pitt basketball certainly has not gotten better lately.
In Dixon’s first eight years at Pitt, he averaged 27 wins and 7.5 losses per season. The Panthers made the NCAA tournament every year, and his average NCAA seed was 3.8.
In his past five years, three of them in the Atlantic Coast Conference, Pitt averaged 20.4 wins and 12.6 losses. The Panthers missed the NCAA tourney twice, and in their three Big Dance appearances the average seeding was a 9.
Clearly, the program arc is down.
VaWolf82KeymasterSummary that includes way more information than I care about:
VaWolf82KeymasterCBS is still pumping the Herbster
Herb Sendek (former Arizona State/NC State head coach)
Sendek has taken three different schools to the NCAA Tournament — including North Carolina State, an ACC member, five straight times from 2002 to 2006. He grew up in Pittsburgh and graduated from Carnegie Mellon. So he’s a local guy with a résumé filled with accomplishments. He’s won more than 400 games at the Division I level.
VaWolf82KeymasterAs for the “why” – I don’t care.
Exactly. You are who your record says you are.
VaWolf82KeymasterTubby at Kentucky is another example. But like Herb, he bailed when the water got hot.
Arguing against Gott being let go is silly because the odds of Gott being fired for on-court performance rounds off to zero. AFAICT, The number of people calling for him to be fired (even on message boards) is exceedingly small.
My guess (and only a guess) is that he would have to screw up pretty bad for Yow to suffer through another coaching search so close to retirement (another assumption, but a good one). The open question in my mind is how she would handle another year of missing the NCAAT.
VaWolf82KeymasterBy waiting we are looking at a potential worst case scenario. We could end up with a poor talent pool.
I’m not too worried about variations in the coaching talent pool when State starts looking for a new coach. There always seems to be coaches ready to move up or move on. (It’s just not likely that a State alum will be available whenever that next coaching search starts.)
