My point just being sustained incremental success, breed success.
See Sendek, Herb for a counterpoint. Plenty of improvement, not enough accomplishments. And 06/07 looked to be a stinker even if Herb stayed.
VaWolf82KeymasterYou’ll find that pack fans are patient if the program is trending in the right direction.
For a while. Eventually folks won’t be happy without some serious accomplishments because mprovement eventually stops. Where it stops is the key determinant in the satisfaction level of the fan base.
VaWolf82KeymasterFrom the yahoo article:
Dayton coach Archie Miller and Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall are obvious potential targets for the Wolfpack, but there’s no reason for either to leave their current gigs unless it’s for a top-tier job. Both are well-compensated and lead programs that are indisputably among the best in their respective leagues. As a result, they would be wise to follow Shaka Smart’s lead and wait for a chance to jump to one of the nation’s most coveted jobs, especially with the possibility of Indiana opening in the near future.
With a little thought, this doesn’t make sense. Several coaches have failed miserably at Indiana since Bobby Knight. If a coach can win enough at Indiana to keep their fans happy, why wouldn’t he be able to win enough at State to keep us happy?
From the outside, Marshall would seem to have the perfect job. He’s the king pin of his conference and is making more there than a lot of schools in power conferences pay. If he wants the prestige of an Indiana job, then there’s that if we wants his ego stroked. But the chances of failing at Indiana are substantially higher than those at Scary Wheat and the pay probably wouldn’t be much better.
VaWolf82KeymasterI’m tired of “making the tournament” being the bellwether of a good season.
I agree, but that doesn’t change the fact that making the NCAAT is both the definition of a “good enough” season and the minimum expectation for most schools in the ACC.
Herb was not fired and was not going to be fired in 2006. However the prospects for the 06/07 season were bleak and it wasn’t clear then, nor now, what would happen if State didn’t make the NCAAT in 2007. People tend to forget that LF had built expectations for the 05/06 season when he said that State was going to be a lot better because of the players that other schools was losing. (Yes, he is that stupid and he really did say that.) But instead, State suffered a collapse of near-epic proportion and barely made the NCAAT in Herb’s last year. Herb jumped at the opportunity to move to another school and reset the countdown clock. (He must have been either surprised by the ASU firing or couldn’t find anywhere else to go.)
In general, ACC coaches are given a certain amount of time to build a program good enough to make the tournament. How long they are given and how often they have to make it obviously varies from school to school. But ACC coaches are routinely fired for not making the NCAAT. That doesn’t matter if you’re at State or any other school.
Side note: Off of the top of my head, Doh’s 3 years at UNC is one of the shortest ACC tenures that I remember.
VaWolf82KeymasterAnother take from yahoo.com on State’s job.

That’s really funny for those of us that have been around for a while.

02/21/2017 at 8:31 PM in reply to: Your “Where’s Gen. Wm Tecumseh Sherman When You Need Him?” at GT Open Thread #118608VaWolf82Keymastertheacc.com feed is working for now. It doesn’t seem that long ago that State blocked all of the radio stations in the Wolfpack network from streaming over the internet so that they could charge for the radio feed. Now we can watch video for free.

Been happening for decades so I’m not surprised.

Just pay the nice lady at the toll booth. It’s always worked for me.
VaWolf82KeymasterLong article on the first stages of the Carousel. Nothing earth-shattering about State, but interesting anyway.

VaWolf82Keymasteryour posts are very enlightening but the acronyms make them brutal to comprehend.
Just wait until they start using player’s nicknames that were made up here at SFN.
VaWolf82KeymasterJust checked Pomeroy and Clemson is at #38. They’ve had a ton of close losses to some really good teams which helps with Pomeroy. They’ve got 4 Top50 wins which helps with the Dance Card. For a change, their OOC schedule didn’t include a dozen high school teams which helps with every ranking.
They’ve stayed in the conversation based on several things….RPI (or other) ranking staying in the traditional bubble zone along with their quality wins. Plus, I’ve heard several commentators mention that the mid-major ranks are weaker this year than the past several….so this group isn’t pushing them out of the conversation.
They’re not a bad team. They have 12 losses and 9 of those were to Top50 teams (similar story to WF). They just haven’t won enough games to prove that they are good enough for the NCAAT.
VaWolf82KeymasterThis is Crean’s 9th year at Indiana. He took them to the NCAAT 4 times with 3 S-16’s.

Not necessarily on our list. Just posting about a potential, competing destination for Archie.
VaWolf82KeymasterWiki’s take on Matta:
Thad Matta, former head coach at Butler and Xavier, was hired by Ohio State in July 2004.[2] Ohio State has won 20 or more games in all of Matta’s twelve seasons, received a berth in the NCAA tournament eight times, and made it to the Sweet Sixteen four times and to the Final Four twice. Ohio State has also been the Big Ten regular-season champions five times and Big Ten Tournament champions three times, appearing in the championship game six times.
OSU went to NIT last year after 7 straight NCAAT appearances. Year by year breakdown:

Not necessarily on our list. Just posting about a potential, competing destination for Archie.
VaWolf82KeymasterI know nothing of Mr. Featherston
He used to write for one of the local newspapers (Durham?) and got downsized. He’s written for Duke Basketball Report since then. (While obviously Devil-centric, it’s still a site with plenty of good content and analysis.) There are quite a large number of sports reporters around the country that I would have gotten rid of before him.
VaWolf82KeymasterI just noticed SYR’s schedule for next week, Duke at home on Wed and then at L’ville on Sunday. Looks grim for the Orange.
VaWolf82KeymasterAnd Notre Dame is just poop. They used up their Irish luck last season.
It’s beginning to look like Boeheim did as well.
VaWolf82KeymasterDance Card has been updated after Sunday’s games. I wouldn’t call GT even after last night’s win. The Dance Card put them two spots ahead of bubble break.
VaWolf82KeymasterIt’s rare that I call BJD on optimist, but putting Marshall at 20% seems pretty optimistic to me. If he’s interested, then clearly State should be interested in him. But I don’t think that State should get in a bidding war over him.
Archie being an alum may not play much into his decision making process. If it was someone close to me, I would advise to look at the best situation for him and his family. But little would make me happier than for Arch to come to Raleigh AND be successful.
VaWolf82KeymasterIMO Parrish et al are just outing themselves as ill-informed, surface-level gadflies.
And in other late-breaking news, water is wet. 🙂
That said, you can lead a troll to facts, but you can’t make him think.
Ain’t that the truth.
VaWolf82KeymasterHere’s another article with a few digs, but more balanced overall:
In truth, NC State isn’t a very good job. Sure, there’s a strong history, great facilities and a loyal fan base. But there’s an endless winter in the shadow of Duke and North Carolina. Plus, the Wolfpack also lead the ACC in unrealistic expectations, as Gottfried made four NCAA tournaments in six years and got fired two days after Valentine’s Day. (To be fair, his team played with all the poise and discipline of Marmaduke chasing his tail for most of the season).
The article also has a list of coaches, mostly pulled out of thin air….pretty much like we do here.
EDIT
The article does a pretty good job of including coaches that might be ready for a change. That supports the approach of hiring a search consultant to make it easy for someone to reach out with little fear of their current school finding out that they are looking.
VaWolf82KeymasterAs expected, the land of trolls (ie CBS Sports) takes the first shot at State fans titled:
This should temper wild expectations for NC State: ‘I wouldn’t touch that job’
