triadwolfParticipant06/04/2014 at 11:54 AM in reply to: Additional Non-Conference Football Scheduling information #52512triadwolfParticipant
For the most part NC State has historically done a pretty good job of trying to get at least one quality out of conference opponent each season. The problem has been that historically these schools back out of the agreement and we end up scrambling to fill the schedule with crap opponents. It sounds as if the former administration was a major culprit here, but I can remember other schools backing out of deals before Fowler came on board.
And you give ESPN too much credit. The home and home scheduled series had nothing to do with ESPN. What they did was take a 2 game series and turn into a single event. They robbed both teams of a home game and eliminated a game from the schedule that both schools had to fill – probably with a nobody opponent.
I agree that it has to improve, but it has not entirely been for lack of wanting to play a good opponent.
triadwolfParticipantKids that leave early for the pros or transfer to another school should be removed from the equation. For the most part these events have little or no correlation to academics. I know in theory schools are supposed to be recruiting true student-athletes, but…
triadwolfParticipantI wouldn’t worry too much about this. If our strength of schedule is affecting our ability to make the football playoffs, we’ll be in pretty good shape. That’ll mean we’re one of the top 5 or 6 programs in the country; at that point we’ll be a much more attractive scheduling option to quality schools and it will no longer be an issue. I’ll welcome being in that position no matter the schedule.
triadwolfParticipantCorch the Torch
triadwolfParticipantI would argue that over the last 20 or so years State generally has tended to bring in talented athletes; Schools like Duke tends to bring in talented basketball players. In my mind there is a big difference. If you just look at the guys that left last year, each one of them had major flaws in their game. The only one that I think can eventually overcome his flaws is Lo Brown because his was more related to inexperience in the position and shooting is something you can improve through reps and mechanics.
I agree with a couple other points that were made regarding lack of supporting cast and team chemistry. There’s a video on youtube of State playing Kansas in 1987; if you watch that game you’ll quickly realize that we’ve not been close to that level of talent since.
triadwolfParticipantUnfortunately I too was the victim of a bathroom stall voyeur. I certainly tend to feel better after a good crap; although I never imagined it could bring someone else joy. I don’t recall how many times I used the bathroom in HH, but i certainly recall the last time.
History of technology was certainly my favorite class in that building. I also had Mulholland and I don’t think I would have remembered the class or prof without this thread. My worst class was differentials with a TA I couldn’t understand and tests that seemed to have zero relationship to the lectures and homework.
Can’t say I loved or hated it, but it’s one of the things unique to State.
triadwolfParticipantTreachery is the verdict. I really don’t think any one answer put me there; I suspect it was a judgement call – just threw my picks out and said “I don’t care about his answers, he just looks like a #9”.
Being frozen does make it tough to have any fun down there.
triadwolfParticipantEight of the top 10 have blue on their uniform vs. only 2 with red. As much as I love red it is obviously a handicap in NCAA basketball…
triadwolfParticipantTwo things stick out to me:
I feel as if the pressure on Smart to win will build every year. That is a lot of money for a small school to be paying a coach; how long before the buzz of his deep tourney run wears off?
WTF Arizona State? You’ve really got to give HWSNBN credit; is there another coach that makes more per win than he does? The collection of photos he possesses must be something else.
Oh and third, I didn’t realize Gott was in the top 20 with regards to salary. I’m not saying that I don’t agree with what DY is paying him, but as top 20 coach (wrt pay) the sweet 16 three of every 5 years should be the expectation.
triadwolfParticipant^ You’re absolutely right – these kids actually took tests.
Although the goat kid seems to have strong *NC ties…
The letter written in Chinese is great.
triadwolfParticipant@eas – I feel your pain; I graduated in 1989 at that was the rapid beginning of the end of a really good era of Wolfpack sports. Football did ok for a couple years with Sheridan, but he was the last link to a fun time.
I thought about posting that video last weekend right after we lost St. Louis, but I thought it may be too a bit much to handle at the time and encourage a few more to leap off a bridge and end their misery.
I like TL, but Corch played at a different level and was physically much stronger. I also think he was a lot quicker than opponents (and fans) thought he was. That team in the video was really talented and it’s a shame one historically bad call a season later in the NCAA’s took away an opportunity for them to possibly do something special. Of course that 87-88 season was the infamous W(who)TF is Murray St. season. It’s funny that I don’t remember Shackleford being that athletic; I recalled that he was good, but not like that – could have something to do with the amount of beer consumed at the time.
triadwolfParticipantI don’t know why the link didn’t show up. Anyway, you copy and paste the this:
triadwolfParticipantI stumbled across this video on Youtube a couple weeks ago; it’s Kansas @ State in 1987 – the whole game. Anyone comparing TL to Corch only needs to watch this to end the discussion. This is Corchiani’s 2nd college game and, in my opinion, TL was never going to be close. I liked TL, but he was really overrated.
triadwolfParticipantAnother example of a senior led team beating a team of mostly sophomores and freshman.
triadwolfParticipant^ I also noticed that on the poll – TJ coming back is a pipe dream for sure.
triadwolfParticipantNone of us has any clue what that team will look like. So I see no sense in making projections based on nothing more than a wild-assed guess.
2015/2016 A team potentially loaded with Juniors with a lot of playing experience, a sophomore class that looks pretty good on paper that should get a lot of playing time next year; and a freshman class that should be fairly talented based on past recruiting results. Oh, and a senior point guard that has shown he can play pretty well. No more a wild ass guess than saying we’ve reached our ceiling and won’t get any better like many have posted…
triadwolfParticipant@Wolfpack – I was speaking more towards individual improvement for next year. I’m with you in that I’m not sure that will translate into a better team season as next year there are definitely some big hurdles in the league. I think there’s potential to have a really good team next year, but with many variables. The 2015-2016 season is one that I feel can be a very good year, but I agree there are some questions still out there.
@Mista Wolf – No worries; I wasn’t very clear in what I said – post tournament hangover, and not alcohol induced (although I really wish I drank more last night in hindsight).
triadwolfParticipantI didn’t say you don’t practice free throws year around. But 15 minutes of practice each day during the season typically won’t result in a large improvement. It is one phase of the game that a coach can only spend a limited amount of time on. My point is that players need to take it upon themselves to work on their game outside of team practice. It is no coincidence most good/great players make major strides from one season to the next. Players have to want to individually improve and that takes place outside the normal hours of scheduled practice – year around.
triadwolfParticipantI’m not going to get into the blame game; the loss sucked, it was epic and we all know that NC State should be right below UL on the bracket for tomorrows game. But everyone needs to keep in mind the youth of this team and how far they came this year; you can question some in game coaching and points of emphasis, but overall this season was a GREAT coaching job by Gott.
I kind of laugh at people who throw out practicing free throws during the season. You don’t become a better free throw shooter at team practice, you get better 10 PM in the gym by yourself in the middle of June, July, Aug… After JV leaves Gott has only his players left. If you consider the amount of improvement JV and TJ Warren had over the off-season as an indicator, I believe we’ll see drastic improvement in this team next year. I think Gott is recruiting players that want to work and improve; these guys just have a different feel compared to the previous crew. If they put in the off-season work to improve we have no worries going forward.
We’ll know how serious these guys are come Nov. 2014.
triadwolfParticipantHopefully this loss stings enough to motivate these guys for next year. What this team will be will be determined over the next 6 months. You don’t get better at shooting jump shots or free throws over the course of the season, you work your ass off during the off-season to get better. This looks like a group that will put in the work, but we’ll know in November. Will KH lose 30 lbs; will Cat hit the weights and get stronger; etc?
With the exception of Howell, I didn’t see the last group improve physically in the 3 or 4 years they played; hell I don’t think CJL added one ounce of muscle the whole time he played. It’s easy to go out and practice the things you’re good at and play some pick up ball over the summer to “stay in shape”, it’s quite another to work at the things you don’t do well and really get better. TJ and JV obviously put in the work last off-season and it paid huge dividends; hopefully that’s the beginning of a culture of State players putting it upon themselves to improve.
triadwolfParticipantIt sucked but fatigue and youth showed. STL made them work so hard on offense there was nothing left at the end. One of the least experienced teams in Div. 1 vs.one of the most experianced teams after 5 games in 8 days. Not an excuse, just what it was.
triadwolfParticipantSo far…
triadwolfParticipantI’m not saying there isn’t anything there, but there’s one obvious trend I think you’re ignoring. With the exception of Wake, all those games are against strong defensive teams which we have struggled against all year. UNC, SU & UVA are three other losses against good defensive teams. When guys get frustrated on offense they often try to make things happen on defense which can lead to more fouling.
I’m no fan of Luckie, but these are teams we would expect to struggle against (minus Wake) given our offensive struggles.
triadwolfParticipantI’ll just say that more than not that would be called a shooting foul regardless of what the technical definition of the rule is. But I think he had started his shooting motion for a layup and if you use that for the basis of deciding a block or charge it should apply here also.
That said we shouldn’t have turned the damn ball over…
