On a night when the offense was sluggish/out of sync, they pulled away by creating opportunities on DEFENSE! The previous 5 years this game would have come down to the wire and may have even been a loss. I hope they’re good enough to at least make the bubble, but I’m going to enjoy watching the defensive effort and a selfless offense regardless of the results this year.

If UNC is admitting these classes were fraudulent, then logic dictates that the grades should be also. At the very least this should make players that took the classes ineligible and wins (& pseudo-championships) should be vacated. This should also impact the APR retroactively and result in penalties. There are ways to punish them by playing their own game if the NCAA really wants to; but do they…

The schools that should really be upset at this whole debacle are the one’s that have been penalized for low APR such as UConn, Syracuse, UNLV, etc. NCAA is basically saying that they don’t care how you achieve a satisfactory APR; create fake classes if necessary, but graduate your players. The APR was already a bit shaky; if the holes don’t get penalized like they should, the APR will be a total joke.

Somehow Cincinnati is at 111% capacity, their average attendance is 4000 more than their stadium holds. Maybe the NCAA has outdated capacity numbers for some stadiums?

I surprised the holes didn’t think of this and just tell the NCAA their stadium capacity is only 30,000. Even then they’d still have a tough time breaking into the top half.

I don’t care what it’s recognizing, the word monogram just shouldn’t be associated with anything football related. The hill really works hard to diminish what I still consider a violet and manly game. Monogram, pine trees, wine & cheese, baby blue uniforms – is this a croquet match they’re having every fall Saturday?

Does the block S impression left all over the UNC football players bodies from last season’s beat-down qualify as a monogram?

Another one that comes to mind is the 1996 game against Alabama where Jamie Barnette got his first start as a RS freshman. We didn’t win, but it was right down to the wire. If I recall correctly, Barnette was starting because O’Cain suspended Laureano.

Proud of the guys hands down. I thought there were some awful calls to start the second half that went against us/for them; they came at a time we could have extended a lead and maybe taken control (the call against Lacey after he was mugged really irked me; and then the no call with Barber down the lane).

That being said we never seemed to be in sync on offense; with a few exceptions the ball didn’t really go into the post and ball movement was lacking. Despite that we were in there until about the 5 min mark after which I thought our shot selection really was poor for the rest of the game.

Would’ve liked to see Barber at his best, but that’s how it goes. I’m sure L’ville’s defense had something to do with it, but I would’ve like to see us go inside a lot more than we did – even if we kicked it back out. I don’t feel like we really made them work down low on defense.

Oh well, it was a good season and hopefully this motivates everyone to work a little harder this off-season. Our potential for more success next year should help deter any potential defections.

It’s been interesting to me that the media is focusing on how we were totally lucking to beat LSU and that Villanova shot poorly and that’s why they lost. It makes me wonder if most of these guys actually watched the games.

We dictated the LSU game for 30 minutes; if not for a total let down for the last 10 minutes of the first half, we win that game by double digits. Now we did play poor defense for those 10 minutes and LSU missed some shots and free throws, but we shot poorly from the 3 point line and RT had another off game. Was there some luck – yes, but if you really watched the game we were the better team.

The general media take on the Villanova game just irks me. We controlled that game from the start and dictated flow the whole way. We severely limited open 3’s, took away the dribble drive and dominated inside. Did they miss some open shots? Yep But we sure as hell did too. RT was non-existent as an offensive contributor and we shot poorly from 3, yet we still controlled the game. This was not a loss for the wildcats because they played poorly; our guys imposed their will on Villanova and dictated the whole game without playing their best basketball.

Playing UL again scares me a bit as it is difficult to beat good league teams twice in the same season. RP will definitely have a defensive wrinkle(s) to throw at us and we’ll have to adjust. I agree that we should be slight favorites, but we will have to play well to move on.

I think Michigan State is getting too much credit for shutting UVA. Tho Hoo’s have been shutting themselves down all year and have been playing on the edge the whole season. It finally caught up to them yesterday.

Free Throws: Lacey 0-3, Barber 2-5, Cody Martin 1-2 – The other 3 players were perfect from the line. Last night wasn’t a team free throw shooting problem – it was a Barber/Lacey free throw shooting problem. Those two can’t go 2-8. I also think we didn’t get to line enough with how physical a game it was – need to feed it inside.

The offense will hopefully come along as the season goes on, but I bet Purdue ends up being a very good defensive team at seasons end, so that definitely played a part. As many have said – there are plenty of teaching points from this game.

BTW Perdue shot 39.3%; that’s not bad defense. Now the number of attempts per possession we allowed…

It’s a good strategy for a bowl trying to sell tickets. A ton of ECU fans will come to watch their team beat up on us one more time; especially on national television. I think it’s a horrible match up for us and am really hoping it doesn’t happen.

No worries Grey – And you’re right, building quality depth will overcome most if not all “NC State S#@t”.

Now if we can just find a way to be on the good side of blown reffing calls more than the bad side (better yet eliminate the blown calls altogether). I don’t know if it’ll work, but I think DD is taking a bit of Coach K’s approach to make sure he gets a fair shake going forward. At least he’s making an attempt to hold them accountable.

Iā€™m referring to our propensity to acquire injuries in areas we can least afford to.

Pretty sure that was related to crappy S & C

It might take a couple seasons to prove that theory, but I believe you are correct.

Grey – I get your point. But when I’m talking NC State S@#t, I’m not talking about unlucky bounces of the ball, reffing conspiracies, wacky voodoo crap; I’m referring to our propensity to acquire injuries in areas we can least afford to.

Injuries happen every weekend in football and to every team, but it seems State has a real history in this dept. Just last year we had maybe 3 or 4 legit skill players that were a real threat on the field for offense and I think every single one missed significant time. This year the linebacker position was one of the areas we really couldn’t afford an injury and it happens early in camp. Now Fernandez has done a heck of a job filling in, but it doesn’t change what happened. We just appear to get more than our fair share of such occurrences.

The offense is well balanced, we’ve got quality depth at receiver (although young), we’ve got 3, maybe 4, solid running backs, an exceptional QB, and an outstanding offensive line. All I’m saying is the only thing I see stopping the offense will be injuries to key positions with no depth.

Perhaps I shouldn’t use the phrase NC State S@$t; not meant as a whine, merely an observation based on history.

I am one before the season that would have considered 5-6 wins good progress and a bowl appearance a touchdown. After watching the team to date I have trouble not seeing this team win at least 7. My simple reasoning on this is that I think our offense is going to win us more games than our defense will lose from this point forward.

As more game tape gets reviewed the 40+ point games may not continue, but I just don’t see teams holding us below 30 unless NC State S#%@ creeps up and bites us square in the A$$.

I didn’t know Doeren also coached basketball; that’s the only job worth taking at Kansas. Being the head football coach at Kansas is a job for desperate souls, young assistants, or guys just interested in the pay check.

I don’t think we have anything to worry about over the next 2 years. But there is always the possibility that some idiot AD will offer DD a idiotic sum of money that will force him to at least consider the opportunity.

^ VaWolf – No doubt our sos is bad; just pointing out that maybe not quite as bad as it looked on paper a couple months ago. Either way you’re right, sos doesn’t mean anything to NC State other than artificially feeling marginally better about what you’ve accomplished.

The only thing that matters now is the next 8 (hopefully 9) games. Particularly the next 4, a win or two may indicate that this a better team than most probably thought. Conversely, I don’t think much can be determined at all if we lose all of the next 4 – except maybe in how we lose them.

    Schedule Strength
    Past Opposition: 4-2 .667 (5, 27)

27th hardest schedule in the country to date? I know it only factors what has happened so far and can be skewed, but perhaps our OCC schedule isn’t as bad as perceived. Or maybe it is… I’m not really sure how this stat is calculated.

Good game from the standpoint that they played and executed well. I think this is a better team than last year, particularly offensively, but how much better is the question.

One the most telling things this season is that Underwood was by far our best offensive option last year; this season he is a 5th or 6th option, if that. Perhaps there’s something else going on such as an injury we don’t know about, but assuming he’s healthy it really does show how bare the cupboard was last year.

Although I’d seriously consider Underwood for returning punts after what Cherry showed this week.
