I tip my hat to DY… one of the best things that has happened to this school.
She has hired coaches who know how to win – and gets rid of those who can’t perform. She is also engaged with the student athletes (e.g. Abu remarked that she had spoken to the players to find out what they are looking for in another coach). In my opinion, choosing coaches is a lot like choosing stocks… there is a lot of randomness and no one can win 100%. So, if you bat .4, you are doing pretty good.
We’ll miss her.
travelwolfParticipantAfter MOnday’s game, 2 things are for sure:
– As Smith goes, so does our team
– We will lose the next game (Louisville)travelwolfParticipantHey, someone who’s got a realistic point of view! After a game where everything went right, chances are that we’ll play like s$^t next game – especially Smith… unless he’s the next David Thompson.
travelwolfParticipantAwesome analysis… now can we get Gott and team to read it and fix the defense?
travelwolfParticipantPoverty and lack of education… Don’t forget that people who are still alive grew up under Jim Crowe laws – and awful schools (because they had black students). I spoke to someone who grew up in Salisbury, NC – and he said that the white school was so much nicer than the black one. We could solve most of the problems in this country if we put as much into every pupil’s education school as my nephews get in Arlington, VA. I’m jealous of them… still.
travelwolfParticipantAfter such a bad year, here is my prediction… Gottfried wins COY next season. Abu will have a killer jump shot – he reminds me a lot of Len Bias, who somehow evolved into a superstar in the summer between his sophomore and junior years. Anya will lose weight and have an offensive game from more than 2 ft. from the basket. We do need to recruit one more big man – preferably > 7 ft so that our big’s have some practice shooting against stop blockers.
This year we were one man short of having a decent year.
Gott can develop guards well, but he has problems developing big’s. Fix that and we’ve got a good team. Expectations are way down… time to beat them.
travelwolfParticipantIt was pretty clear to me that in the 2nd half, Cat was not the same. Neither was the Martin twin that twisted his ankle. If you didn’t notice the difference in their play, then you don’t understand basketball.
It doesn’t help that Duke has several people who can light it up from beyond the three – one that’s over 6’11”.
We’ve seen 2 halves of basketball that were played excellently in the last 2 games. Eventually, we’ll be able to have them in the same game.
The other thing that we need to do is to get the ball down low. We had the advantage there, but didn’t capitalize on it.
Don’t forget that we’ve beaten them 3 of 4 times at home – so that’s pretty amazing.
Patience.
travelwolfParticipantTroll, Sound perspective… Not sure about a top 20 team, but definitely an NCAA Team.
We really have to get it inside more – more so that those guys develop offensive moves for next year. I don’t see us having much of a future this year. Every coach has a bad year now and then – except if they have the cupboard loaded all the time. Even Coach K is having a bad year – and he’s got way more talent than we do. I mean, way way more stars!
travelwolfParticipantCat’s clearly hurt – not playing like a cat anymore. Not sure about the Martin twin that rolled his ankle. I’m surprised that the “insightful” commentators aren’t doing their job.
travelwolfParticipantmmm… wonder how well women’s bball coaching applies to men’s bball.
01/16/2016 at 1:12 AM in reply to: Podcast: S2 E19 – Boise St Expert on our new OC & A Surprising Take on Gottfried #97125travelwolfParticipantAfter thinking about it, our problem might be that our starting team doesn’t have a good practice team. Hell, we need a 7-footer to teach our bigs how to shoot over height. Maybe he should hire some retired b-ball players to give our team competition.
travelwolfParticipantEveryone focuses on the guards… the big problem is the bigs. Absolutely no offense besides garbage baskets and dunks. We won those games against non-conference opponents b/c our bigs overpowered theirs, but that’s not going to happen in the ACC – hence the losses. Besides, every team we play is instructed to foul our bigs if they get a shot off within 2 feet of the basket.
Yeah, it would help if we could hit more outside, but that’s not the real problem. It’s a pity that we are wasting one of the best point guards we’ve had a many years with a team that has no interior offense.
travelwolfParticipantI’m convinced that it’s a personality type that fails to see progress. Just like it’s a personality type that believes in conspiracies (it’s proven – Google it) – I know this because my brother is this type.
I just want to see progress year by year, and we are seeing that in abundance. Given that the team is so young, it’s progress just beating those whom we should beat – as this hasn’t been the case since Sheridan was coach. Don’t forget… we’ve also lost 2 all-conference running backs.
11/03/2015 at 9:32 PM in reply to: Huzzah – Dave Doeren Answers BJD’s Last Remaining Questions Last Saturday #91442travelwolfParticipantGlad to see that you guys are setting some of the critics straight!
travelwolfParticipantWhat I am missing is why anyone is surprised at the outcomes of the games.
1. We still are a very young team
2. DD’s teams play better at the end of the season (at least when he has a young team)
3. the first 4 games were against competition which was a clear step down from the last 2 games. From the last 2 games, it’s clear that we are losing the war in the trenches. It’s hard to win when that happens.
I’m waiting until the end of the season before making a judgement – especially since we have a young team. Blowing out the weak opponents is a clear step forward from last year. Not getting blown out by decent teams is also a step forward from last year. So I’d be surprised if this team didn’t do better than last year’s team – but we have to wait until then end of the season to tell.
I’m pretty sure we will win against Wake – with a week off and an off game last week, I’d put my money on State next game.
travelwolfParticipantthe new cheer: C-O-M-M-U-N-I-T-Y-S-E-R-V-I-C-E
hopefully
travelwolfParticipantI hope she’s getting royalties.
travelwolfParticipantI made a GIF:
travelwolfParticipantHe’s definitely got NFL scouts looking, although I’d wait until after we play Louisville before posting his stats.
travelwolfParticipantSeriously… is there a #firegott crowd? It must be run by a Tarheel.
I don’t know how Gott motivates his players, but he seems to get 110% out of them, and then there are the ones that transfer – which I’m guessing weren’t willing to give 110% or were worried about playing time.
travelwolfParticipantI don’t care what uniforms they wear, and assumed that the “Fashion #Statement” was mainly for the wives… not for serious football fans who know the power of statistics
travelwolfParticipantThat’s some Miami sh!t. For a change.
11/21/2014 at 12:56 AM in reply to: BeeJay Anya leads the Pack block party against Jacksonville #62078travelwolfParticipantIf you find the recent games boring and miss the days of excitement vs. weak teams, I just found a link to last year’s game vs. UNCG – amazingly it works!
http://espn.go.com/watchespn/player/_/id/1312776/#travelwolfParticipantOn the plus side… our defensive was excellent for the most part – except for the situations where bigs didn’t want to rotate on screens near the 3-point line.
On the downside… we weren’t sharing the ball well – it’s ridiculous how many fast breaks didn’t end in a good pass and close shot, but ended with a hail mary shot with or with out a foul.
I really think we need Tyler Lewis back. Barber is really a scorer – he’s not getting the other players involved, which results in a stagnant offense. Gottfried should have played them together last year.
We have so many great bigs this year, that we need great passing on the guard spot.
travelwolfParticipantIt’s amazing what a few wins will do when you have lots of freshman and sophomores playing. Even if most of them are against cupcakes.
Nothing reflects better than a program that shows improvement. Glad to see that coach is capitalizing on recruiting, unlike TOB. This should cause even better improvement in future years. Maybe we’ll finally get as good players as the Cheaters without having fake classes.
