I appreciate posts and threads like this. Less on the gnashing of teeth and more about the details that matter year to year.
Added to that it is nice to see State basketball teams (thought flawed) that actually look like basketball teams on the court. Robinson’s teams lacked proper talent but as I remember they did not give. Herb’s early teams showed some promise but the level was found quickly, Lowe’s teams were a hot mess. Gott’s teams so far I see some improvement but there is still a ways to go to get where I want the team to be.
The only thing I can say about 20 win teams and the NCAA tourney is they have a better chance than 10 win teams <g>.tractor57ParticipantBeware the pat on the back.
tractor57ParticipantToday’s game could be a nice start to the fix. The intensity on defense helped all way around. Still some issues of course and if playing against a quicker team other things have to happen. Step one is intensity and focus which playing good defense brings. Now the team has a brutal stretch of games. Come out at .500 or better and I think they are the winners the rest of the year. The gauntlet has been tossed …
tractor57ParticipantI enjoyed this game of course. Better energy level, much better defense (other than rebounding) and although a bit sketchy on offense early that even came around. I’ll give Caleb a pass for that charge on the break with the dunk attempt – good call and maybe a bad decision but it did help to enforce the aggressive tone. His next dunk was incredibly slick. I think we will be enjoying twin power more and more. I have always thought good offense can spring from good defense and maybe that was today’s theme.
An up day for the bipolar thing that is the Pack

Long term Gott might not be the deal. I will say things are better than anything since V. That brings that hard decision.
There were things I liked about Herb and many I did not. Ultimately the negatives outweighed the positives. Gott isn’t there for me at this time but it could happen.12/31/2014 at 11:14 AM in reply to: Bad defense. Bad offense. Bad. State lays egg, loses 76-60 #67506tractor57ParticipantTo a point I agree with anscu87 but there is the issue of the here and now. Last BB game was horrible on many levels as have been some FB games but the general tone here has become “fire them all”. There is a pattern of bashing after a ‘bad loss’ then praising after a ‘good win’. As a fan base that seems a bit bipolar.
I greatly disappointed by the effort period but I will not attempt to micromanage. Those who say the current staff is worse that previous ones might be revisionists or maybe not. Time will tell on that front. All I know is I was not happy with the effort last night – first time this year I thought effort was totally lacking.12/30/2014 at 7:06 PM in reply to: Bad defense. Bad offense. Bad. State lays egg, loses 76-60 #67454tractor57ParticipantA few spurts of decent offense and defense. A lot of bad offense and defense and as has become usual bad free throw shooting.
12/28/2014 at 4:41 AM in reply to: While The Wolfpack Basks In Victory, UNC Players Are Calling Each Other Out #67196tractor57ParticipantMaybe not ‘satisfied’ but thoroughly impressed with the development of the program. Kudos to the coaches, staff and the players.
I’ll second Grey in saying thanks to Alpha Wolf for not only this write up but many others he has done over the years.
tractor57ParticipantHe will be missed but I do wish the best for him whatever that entails.
tractor57ParticipantOne thing I noticed was that if you play well you get more time. That game was a joy to watch – and in the 4th the team withstood a serious comeback attempt. Perfect – not, darn good absolutely. I think we have something special with Coach D and the staff along with the players they are assembling.
tractor57ParticipantI didn’t get to watch the first half but I did listen to the last of it. Simply fugly. The second half started in the same trend. The last quarter something sparked the team and they played with passion.
Forget the good loss/bad win crap. This was a win and probably the best 15 minutes of BB we will see this year.I no longer try to read the posts during a game – just doesn’t fit my style. At this point I am barely reading here at all. The signal to noise is getting really bad. The signal (posts that provide insight) still makes a check in worthy but the trend is downward.
tractor57Participanttractor57ParticipantI haven’t held season tickets for a couple decades but I still remember those noon early season games. With all the TV coverage and my getting longer in the tooth I generally opt for the best seat – in front of my TV. Granted I give up the game day experience but I don’t have to stand in line for the bathroom or fight the traffic arriving and leaving.
tractor57ParticipantAgreed Battier doesn’t sound comfortable but he has had some insights.
RTO taking care of businesstractor57ParticipantThanks for the analysis. Posts like this are why I visit the site these days.
I am reminded of the tired Al Davis thing “just win. baby!” – not the entire answer but things get much more positive if you win your games.I am enjoying watching this year’s Pack as they move forward. Certainly a work in progress.
tractor57ParticipantDue to being out I missed the game but watched the replay. King Karl reminds me more and more of Lenny Wirtz with his petulance and his quick whistle.
Hopefully this game will be the base of some maturing of the team. Opportunities missed and at times not valuing having the ball and making positive plays. Part of that is immaturity, part of that is will to win, part of that is playing a more skilled and determined foe.
I’m not obsessing over the loss. I am disappointed but I’m also looking toward the conference season where the competition will be tougher.
tractor57ParticipantFirst any bowl game includes additional practice – always a good thing. Second a bowl game in FL should aid recuiting (on that point I’m counting on the staff).
tractor57ParticipantBasketball has always seemed to lead to more complaints about officiating. Especially the ACC with the history of flamboyant officials all the way back to the beginning of the conference. Yes often I do see what seems to be inconsistencies (often within a game and pointed at particular players or maybe the ‘special of the game’ infraction). So yes there is some of that and there always has been in the ACC.
I also think coaches teach players to take advantage of all they can (of course they do) and some players are better able than others to play that game. Len Elmore had a good point when calling the last game about bigs getting ‘lazy’ when tired and also about using hips rather than hands when battling with their opponents. Then there is the fan aspect – we want a free flowing game without play stoppages but always call all the fouls committed against the players of our team.
Like Bill I don’t expect any real change as that would mean some group giving up power and/or money.
tractor57ParticipantFair point but I tend to disagree a bit. I did see a couple of serious errors by the refs – one was mentioned by the hated Len Elmore who I thought added something useful at times. It just gets to be the usual that regardless of the sport or the particular game it is always about the officiating. I thought tonight it was more about allowing the refs to call fouls by actually committing those fouls. Case in point is Anya – 4 of the fouls were not doubt his to own. The 5th not so much. Dex was a foul machine tonight. I’m sure Wake fans also thought their team was jobbed.
tractor57Participant“You are witnessing the destruction if college basketball”
How so?As always some officiating misses added to that some good and bad for each team.
I enjoyed watching this game warts and all. What I saw was a team effort where most everyone in a State uniform contributed.
I’ve been watching ACC basketball since the ’60’s. Looked much like atypical game to me.
No wonder I don’t post much here lately as the tone seems to be F the refs and the ACC – sometimes that is deserved but most times not so much.
12/05/2014 at 7:48 AM in reply to: NC State Football By The Numbers – Post UNCheat Beatdown Edition #64191tractor57ParticipantWe have seen progress year 2 over year 1. To me it has become even more obvious how much ground we had to make up. TOB did some good things cleaning up the mess Chuck left but he also has his issues – speaking of it was nice to see Taylor Gentry’s number in the limelight. Is Coach D the answer? Time will tell but to this point I like the director of the program.
tractor57ParticipantTalent gap? Yes but that gap is narrowing rather quickly under Coach D. At least this staff does recruit.
tractor57ParticipantI like Coach D’s thinking – national championship worthy team. I also like the tone he has set for that journey. Will there be both ups and downs? Of that I have no doubt but like V Coach D has a dream.
tractor57ParticipantTo me Coach D struck the right balance between being gracious to the loser and being an advocate for the Wolfpack program. Yes he was partisan (as I think he should be), combative about winning (and within the rules) with some great props to our fanbase.
The whining about dirty play reminds me on one Greg Little the scum he is. Not that was dirty play.
This might have been a program defining win – that we will know in a few years. What I do know is Coach D knows exactly how to speak to our fanbase.
tractor57ParticipantAs to BJD’s earlier comments – the scheduling is meshing quite nicely.
