It should be no surprise that other teams will make runs at various assistants who have built a decent reputation. If Canada does go I wish him well unless his team plays the Pack. The real key will how coach D handles replacing staff when turnover happens.
tractor57ParticipantI dozed off for most of the first half and apparently the snooze was a better choice. I’m disappointed not so much with the loss rather then huge hole that was dug while I snoozed. That said I’m not swearing off Pack BB or calling for the chancellor to be fired over last night. At the end of the season there will be time to evaluate the year as a whole.
tractor57ParticipantI see two things that makes this a must win – the RPI factor as mentioned and the old win the home games. And you can add the old line about beating those who should be your lessers.
The team has faced a pretty tough line of games of late with some success and some failure but in the end to be the man you have to beat the man – starting with the lesser man.tractor57ParticipantI think Alpha’s analysis gets to the heart of the Wilson/Glennon issue. Especially the second paragraph. The most recent recruiting of the current staff simply supports the idea that recruiting was not part of the TOB plan.
tractor57ParticipantRick I’ll bite on that one. If you are talking the few one and done players the high level of athletic talent can compensate for lack of experience. However if you are speaking of the current Pack roster of gifted athletes but I would think no one and done type the lack of experience shows more. An excuse? Not really but possibly an explanation.
tractor57ParticipantRoom for many opinions. My thought is overall this year’s team is more talented. Not to say that individual players from earlier teams were not more talented. As an example obviously there is no on one this year’s team that is an equal head to head with TJ Warren. Does that mean a slide in recruiting or a change is recruiting focus away from the one and done type? Not sure I have that answer. Things I like in this years team revolve around effort and little moping if not getting PT. Maybe there is a culture shift happening. As much as I liked Lewis he did tend to object to a loss of court minutes, more of that can be said for some other former players. It seems this bunch is being conditioned to compete for those minutes. I’m quite pleased with Abu as well as Cody and Caleb. I see progress with Anya and Washington. Maybe a bit less with Freeman.
At the beginning of the season I thought this team would show its best play toward the end of the season and so far I think I am seeing that trend.
I’m also reminded that Sloan and Valvano had transfers on a regular basis. That alone does not portend doom and gloom for me. I would not be surprised to see some transfers out and in as that seems to be the current state of college basketball.
Was I disappointed with the losses? Yes I was and will always be so. Even with that I do see this team growing – it has been an exciting ride.

Granted these things are rarely perfect so things could change in the years ahead but at this point I’m on that train. Seems his actions and his words match well so far.
tractor57ParticipantI was impressed with Cat’s response (or lack thereof) and much less impressed with security at Miami.
tractor57ParticipantBassPacker I think there is room for any/all of these to be factors. Miami did make some adjustments and the Pack came out flat. Credit to the team for continuing to battle even with Lacey and Turner both having what I would call off nights. I saw a lot of potential from Abu and Cody. Some decent play from Barber (although still a high risk/reward thing).
I find it a bit hard to accept the idea that recruiting is going to hell given the the freshmen. In game coaching I’ve seen examples where it has been good and examples where with the benefit of hindsight not so good.
I see progress in the team as the season progresses.
tractor57ParticipantI thought the game was lost with the opening of the second half. Every point after that was trying to dig out of the hole created. For whatever reason the whole team came out flat at the start of the second half.
01/18/2015 at 7:37 PM in reply to: Open Thread: College Basketball, NFL Conference Championship games #70374tractor57ParticipantI gave up faith at about 3:00 left in the 4th quarter. Strangest ending to an NFL game I’ve ever seen.
tractor57ParticipantIn the end good enough for a road win.
tractor57ParticipantI never like to call a particular game a must game but this one is about as close as it gets. To be tier 1 you must beat the teams that you are supposed to be better than.
tractor57ParticipantAny loss to the light blue clad is painful and with such a loss I can after the fact identify all the points in the game where there were failings. I can also identify points in this game where the team showed grit and determination. Before this stretch of games I said I would be happy with going .500 and the team achieved that. Still there is pain after last night.
As Yoda would say – Progress I see but there is much work to be done.
As Jimmy V would say – If you are in the game you can win the game.
Not happy but not tossing the furniture either. I am happy with the total effort though unhappy with the outcome.tractor57Participant^ this!
tractor57ParticipantWufpup,
My highest compliment to an officiating crew is after the game I barely knew they were present. Yes a couple times I could make a case for the Pack getting the shaft but I also could find times when I thought Duke was hosed. Other than those the crew did exactly what they should have done. Call the game and not insert themselves into the game.tractor57ParticipantPlaying not to loose is the basketball equivalent of the ‘pervert’ defense in football. On this Greg Anthony and I agree that a team should continue to do what got them the big lead.
tractor57ParticipantMr. P I had that thought until I saw the replay. Seemed to be one of those wrong place/wrong time issues. Or at least I’ll give the possibility. I thought the game was rather clean even though physical and I also though the officiating was the best I’ve seen in a long time. No Showgirls and without going back to find the names I don’t know who the officials were which to me is a sign of a reasonably called game.
Before this 4 game stretch I thought a 50/50 split was a great outcome. Mission accomplished with the chance to go 3 of 4. I could nit pick some plays during the game to criticize but not the effort or heart.
tractor57ParticipantSo Gottfried teams can’t play defense?
tractor57ParticipantIt just struck me odd that here was an ethics course designed for jocks that had the issues. Kudos to Dartmouth for both exposing and apparently taking corrective action but as we have seen with our friends at the dump on the hump initial impressions might be horribly wrong. Hopefully that is not the case but in this day …
tractor57ParticipantDon’t let the screen door …
tractor57ParticipantExcept for the mention of the class being created specifically for athletes. Maybe nothing but then at the beginning of the UNC mess it was thought to be nothing as well.
tractor57ParticipantIf the change was made by Coach D and not as the result of someone moving on the greener pastures (I can see either happening) my thought is rather simple. On offense was saw improvement in most all areas with the exception of the WR corps. Bo Hines being an exception. If you can find someone who appears better able to teach the position and is a well regarded recruiter one would think that is an upgrade. Maybe totally Coach D’s decision or maybe having a hole to fill and making a good hire. Either way I think this is a plus.
tractor57ParticipantLike him or not Barkley says exactly what he thinks. Many more times than not I find myself nodding my head in cadence with his comments.
tractor57ParticipantUsing the watchespn thing I was trying to watch the replay of today’s game. All good until suddenly things crashed. Then like a good boy I went to the Watchespn menu and imagine my surprise. Game not listed. Not a happy camper and ESPN “customer care” is clueless.
