Rye that is the real deal. My friend did the same. But yes it is a business. So as much as I hate UNX I admit many benefited. It is no a zero sum game. There are real issues with the system as there were in the ’70’s. Smart kids who have some other resources made out well (major pro sports contract or no). I cannot be upset with a player who is guaranteed a first round pick and guaranteed millions. I also cannot be upset with the student athlete who earns a degree and makes a good life.
tractor57ParticipantI’m to right of Attila the Hun but on this issue all I see is silliness. Political theater.
tractor57ParticipantHopefully the Bears OL is up to the challenge.
tractor57ParticipantSings a lot better than I do. I do hope he owns Chicago next spring.
tractor57ParticipantRye we agree of course. I was talking with a childhood friend that went to UNC on an athletic scholarship (early in the Title 9 era). She said they would come back from a game late at night and she would pick up her class work from the school of nursing then work most of the night. Never made the millions some athletes do but she had her college paid and is making a difference today. To me that is a student athlete rather than an athlete.
tractor57Participantrye – agreed totally In some respects a changing of the guard/in others these kids are just as we were back in the day trying to see the best way forward for them. If coaches can leave on the drop of a dime maybe the kids as well.
tractor57ParticipantIf GFK thought he would not do well in the new system (as if there was a old system) it was time to go. I hate that but until I see on court performance by a Keatts team I’m not making a call pro or con.

tractor57ParticipantI can’t say I disagreee with theMD Prez except I don’t think the death penalty is in play – just look at SMU and the lasting effects.

As to low upkeep yes. Rough bladed and tough. Worked well on that hillside.
tractor57ParticipantOnly after clapping his hands 🙂
tractor57ParticipantYes coming from the Prez of a school that left the ACC – not that I disagree with the thought but I suspect little will happen.

The SHP sat at the community store just waiting for him to drive out. After college I went to the Spartanburg, SC area for a job. Much the same conditions in those days. Now I’m living in the house my grandpa build (not had built) so back home again – apologies to Thomas Wolfe but you can go home again. I almost bought some half gallon mason jars at ole Tom’s estate sale which had never been used but I suspect were intended to hold ‘shine.
tractor57ParticipantAll valid points I agree. But with the last hire I have no idea what went on behind the scenes. Obviously Archie wasn’t coming to coach and possibly Keatts was the top candidate actually willing to take the job. Will he be a step up? I think he will. Will that recreate the 1970’s and 1980’s for men’s BB? Possibly but I doubt it. I am willing to see how the situation plays out. At least he did not play us for a pay raise like Calipari and Smart (who both eventually left their schools for bigger gigs).
I’m glad to see better performance in the various non revenue sports but I also put most of my stock in Men’s BB and football (followed by women’s BB).
tractor57ParticipantI won’t argue with Case given what he did. Edwards was a very fine coach as was Holtz – I’ll call that a wash looking over both careers. My point is not since the days of Casey we have underachieved. Maybe AD, maybe coaching. Regardless I do see some sparks of life during Yow’s tenure. I also see some issues – maybe of her own making or maybe forced on her by circumstance.
04/08/2017 at 12:25 PM in reply to: It's Time to Plow and Time to Plant — Spring 2017 Garden Thread…. #122370tractor57ParticipantYears ago my mom and I were working in my garden one spring afternoon. I had a nice row of okra a helicopter flew over and hovered for several minutes. Maybe they were mapping for the countywide property tax thing or maybe they were looking for the other grass. In these parts it once was ‘shine (Jr Johnson used to run down US421 to W-S regularly), my neighbor (who was the bil of the sheriff made and ran shine), later there was a lot of the other grass grown and now it seems to be meth. None of those are a part of my world but the only one I have a big problem with is meth.
tractor57ParticipantI’m not carrying water for Casey. For his era he was a good AD but Sloan returned to Florida in part because of money and the making Valvano coach and AD was a move designed to increase his pay. Maybe as much a BOG/BOT issue as anything so I’m not going to slam him a lot. I can say the performance of our AD’s since Casey until Yow was more than bad. Yow has at least shown some program improvement (not enough yet in football or men’s BB) and we apparently still have an athletics dept that is not a black hole for money overall. They say money is the mother’s milk of politics and it also is for college athletics but as with anything there has to be some sense of proportion.
And yes for whatever reason the men’s BB program was MUCH better then.
tractor57ParticipantJed, Todd Turner, Les and maybe Jimmy V. My opinion the road to peril started with scrambling for money to keep Jim as BB coach – of course the N&O crowd in in on the fix.
tractor57ParticipantAgreed the bar is low but a damn sight better than Foul up.
tractor57ParticipantI’m not ready to declare sainthood for Yow but I do think she has been the best AD for State since Casey -and yes that includes Valvano as well as Robinson.

tractor57ParticipantOn the PSU thing – would it be different if as math professor was using the facilities to the same end? I have no issue with thinking the NCAA went rogue – I do have an issue with administrators KNOWING covering up illegal activity.
That might or might not be the same with ‘ville. UNX maybe not but there is ample evidence that they knowingly created a sham department with the goal of keeping athletes in school. Are they the first? No. Are they the most aggressive? Yes.tractor57ParticipantThe cover up was worse than the crimes in my opinion. In that respect much like UNX. Louisville and others.
tractor57ParticipantFor my benefit how was PSU “Sanduskyed”? They knew his issues and clammed up to save themselves. Loiusville might be next in line. UNX maybe or maybe not.
04/03/2017 at 6:57 PM in reply to: Dad asked me to watch the National Championship with him. Why I said ‘No.’ #122261tractor57ParticipantI’ll check in from time to time but probably will not watch coast to coast. Like BotB I wish I had a dad here to watch the game with (or even my mom who was a big basketball fan) …
