Hey an actual sports comment!

tractor57ParticipantRevisionist history. TOB left the cupboard bare. Lack of any recruiting sealed the deal. DD might not be the savior but I have no doubt the program is in better shape than when TOB was shown the door. Better enough is the question. I get you are not a DD fan but do take the blinders off.
tractor57ParticipantYogi I think pretty much the same. TOB was coasting, refused to recruit and the cupboard was bare. That has impacted DD in his efforts to rebuild the program. Will he get there before patience wears out? Typically that doesn’t happen, usually the next coach becomes the hero based on the work of the program builder.I do think he has to show a better W/L record this year to survive. I also am more optimistic (some reservations) than in a long time for football and men’s basketball. Women’s basketball is further along.
tractor57ParticipantIf your only mark is win/loss I’ll agree with you. I think going forward there are other things to be watched. DD might have a breakout year or might fall face first in the mud this year but I think the program is in a better place today.
tractor57ParticipantI greatly enjoy the exchange of opinions – pro and con. What I don’t like is the back biting that seems to come with those opinions.
For what it is worth I see the football program in a better place than when TOB was released. Enough better? That is always the question.05/25/2017 at 3:44 PM in reply to: It's Time to Plow and Time to Plant — Spring 2017 Garden Thread…. #122816tractor57ParticipantThanks – here not much other than the green sky. There a lot of issues. Thankfully injuries were limited. Several lost houses and of course that gym. Maybe luck or maybe the grace of God – on that I will not speculate. Just glad not worse.

The old gym (where I played a bit in my school days was destroyed. Several houses flattened and some people trapped. One person with serious injuries but no deaths. Those people were really lucky.
tractor57ParticipantGood for the ‘Pack but better good for Y7
tractor57ParticipantChop,
No I’m saying there is a balance. Take your blinders off and actually look at other programs. Do I like the current system? No but I don’t like these athletes being considered as slaves either.tractor57ParticipantIn general I don’t question a player turning pro (whatever league) when they can make significant money. In a few cases I wonder if the trade off between X dollars now vs the potential of XX dollars next year makes sense to stick abound. That said like Va says every player is one knee injury from watching rather than playing. I can tell you if as an underclassman I was offered a large sum of money (6 figures or the like) to take a job them and there it would have been very hard to ignore. I do not like the one and done culture but I also understand it. As it relates to the coaching change in Raleigh I also would rather have players that want to be there – I do not mean that as a slight to any player that leaves rather as an indication of the intent to be a positive force for the team.
tractor57ParticipantI’m hoping the decision works well for Kapita and if he has decided not to be here it is time to move on. That is the current state of college basketball. Gott took a big risk in even signing Ted. If his dream was the NBA staying at NC State will probably not help his chances.
tractor57ParticipantI’m cautiously optimistic as I am with any upcoming season. As a fan I have seen what I think is improvement on the field if not in w/l. With BB time will tell. Gott deserves credit for some good things and the blame for some bad things. Hopefully Keatts can build on the base. As a fan I can’t make a big difference as I don’t have the finances to buy a facility or to fund to any significant degree any program within athletics. I can watch, support the advertizers for the broadcasts and the like but my individual contribution is almost nil. I enjoy watching the games sometimes and agonize at other times like any fan.
tractor57ParticipantOr maybe rather than hire a random person we are better off without. I can see either.
tractor57ParticipantI’m reminded of the disclaimer that comes with any financial document – “past performance is no guarantee of future success” or in our case past sucky performance is no guarantee for future sucky performance. That said there might be a correlation. I think we are seeing improvement in things that build the base for future success but that is only opinion.
04/26/2017 at 10:11 AM in reply to: It's Time to Plow and Time to Plant — Spring 2017 Garden Thread…. #122546tractor57ParticipantI also use raised beds – lots of reasons starting with the clay here could not be worked until late spring meaning I had problems growing peas, beets, various greens. My garden is half raised beds and half conventional. The conventional I use for things like winter squash. The raised beds get tomatoes, summer squash, cukes (on a trellis), horseradish, eggplant, etc. In the fall I use a “greens mix” as a cover crop and to provide greens and turnips (plus some radishes). Things you can do in a relatively small garden as opposed to a farm situation.
tractor57ParticipantGrey,
I agree on the TOB comments – he did change us away from the thug culture that Amato brought. However when he left there was a talent lack. So he gets a +1 and a -1 – in effect nothing. So in the end he left us high and dry as far as wins and loses. Coach D might end up doing the same but I do see a foundation being set. Defense is stronger, offense may not as much. I’m not anti TOB but there were issues just as there are today. Moving forward the question is can they be handled.04/26/2017 at 6:26 AM in reply to: It's Time to Plow and Time to Plant — Spring 2017 Garden Thread…. #122542tractor57ParticipantWith summer squash I tend to plant late to disrupt the borer cycle – it helps but is not a cure all. Being a garden rather than a farming operation I can easily do that. I prefer to not use ‘cides but when they are needed they are needed. It is always interesting to compare what you can do as a gardener with a small plot as compared to a farmer.
tractor57Participant“Tractor then explain to me why we continue to struggle?”
I think of the progress like a stool with 3 legs. Those legs are talent, coaching and the will of the players. Yes the talent has improved from the TOB days, coaching might or might not be better and will is hard to measure. What I do see is a foundation being built. I thought TOB would do that but it did not happen and when he left the cupboard was bare. Some of the other comments in this thread dip into the coaching pool and the “will” pool. Are the results acceptable? Of course not. Maybe on offense it is talent in the skill positions or maybe it is the offensive game plan and play calling (or maybe both).
04/24/2017 at 12:36 PM in reply to: It's Time to Plow and Time to Plant — Spring 2017 Garden Thread…. #122521tractor57ParticipantI don’t know that one – as a gardener and not a farmer my take is there is virus protection is a bit overblown as most og the open pollinated ones have never been tested. That is a different view from farming. In my garden I do not rotate crops but I do “rotate” soil. For this year I’m trying a Cherokee Purple x Brandywine called Gary O’Shea. I love the CP flavor and if the cross reduces the size on the core without losing the flavor it will be a win.
tractor57ParticipantI’m gonna be a bit ugly here but bear with me. If the internet was available when Holtz coached the Pack the same would be said. “Dumbass for not starting Ted Brown first game …” I am not a coach, didn’t sleep in a Holiday Inn Express last night either. So far I agree wins under coach D are not top shelf. I’m not agreeing the staff is incompetent.
tractor57ParticipantI’m not so much in line with the Mason conspiracies. Maybe true but the Masons I have known are pretty normal – that includes my ex-fil and many former coworkers. I am not one however I was invited just before I moved from there. Maybe my view is biased but I have found nothing out of the way.
tractor57ParticipantI was watching a history show last night that spent a lot of time on Sherman. He actually asked for more generous surrender terms than DC wanted. That said he did lay waste to a lot of the south.
tractor57ParticipantI don’t think I would go quite so far however there are some pretty common myths. I have read that that his plan for reconstruction was less onerous than the one put in place after his death.
tractor57ParticipantI will add he freed the slaves- but only in the confederate states …
