tjfoose1Participant
Explain to me how it was prudent? I dont think that is the word you are looking for here.
Shouldn’t have to explain it. Look around the landscape of major college basketball.
Three Hints: Market forces, stability, recruiting.
But I know, if you had your way, Yow would fire Gott and replace him with Chuck Amato.
tjfoose1ParticipantMy guess/thoughts anyway, fwiw.
tjfoose1ParticipantMaybe the perplexing lack of use of JaySam in the bowl game was the capper for DD?
I thought DD’s post game comments rang a little hollow. More like coach speak rather than what HE truly agreed with. If you let the other team dictate that you only get the ball to your best playmaker 4 times, what does that say about the OC?
There did, at times, seem to be inconsistencies between DD’s comments and on the field materialization. DD said throughout the season that JaySam was our best player/weapon and needed to be fed the ball.
tjfoose1ParticipantI too thought Hux should’ve gone first. Pretty much agree 100% w chop’. The defense was the weak link, not the O.
This move is a little odd, all things considered. Raises more questions. In addition to CD’s thoughts below, a philosophical difference, perhaps?
Me thinks QB developement had a good deal to do with this.
Only thing that explains it, IMO. I’m guessing at the college level, it’s difficult to justify not having the OC not also being the QB coach.
Canada won’t have a problem getting a new gig.
tjfoose1ParticipantOur team improved this year. We lost by less and were more consistent overall (Dave cites we were competitive which is coachspeak you guys still with me?) Those with strong critical thinking skills can understand that a team that wins/loses by a point (over the long run) is essentially equivalent to its opponent.
I agree. It was nice to see others recognize this.
As for basketball, I’m just an average fan. I don’t have the background, experience, and acumen that I do in football.
tjfoose1ParticipantNot a stellar moment for him.
Yes, it was.
tjfoose1ParticipantIs a team that loses by 30 the same as a team that loses by 10?
We improved this year whether most fans have the analytical ability to look past win loss metric is their problem.
Also keep in mind that was MSUs Philip Rivers. He’s better than our QB and had a much better o-line.
’44, Are you ok? I agree 100%, but the above is not following your normal theme.
I’ve seen enough from Canada to stick with him. I do think he occasionally gets away from what works, and goes a little too Tecmo Bowl for my taste. Too much horizontal running and passing. I’m a north-south guy.
I agree, but to be fair, the horizontal running is tactically paired with the north-south stuff. This was most visible in the Wake game. Wake made it a point to shut down JaySam on the horizontal game. That opened up Dayes’ big game going North-South. The rushing stats speak for themselves (one of the best seasons in Wolfpack history). We were missing a consistently effective vertical passing games. It didn’t help that Brissett struggles, mightily, in wet weather, and we played 3 games in the rain. All ugly games for Jacoby.
tjfoose1ParticipantRealize Im in the minority, but I see program improvement. Questions are, is it enough and will it continue?
Lots of talent has been brought in the past two years, but the 2016 class is looking a little thin. Still time for it to thicken though, but Im not encouraged.
2016:
Huxtable? Not impressed. Never was, but kept an open mind. He’s mediocre, at best. He lost me midseason. Based on what I know of DD and a few other tidbits, Im gonna assume Santa Hux won’t be back.
Jalan McClendon? Yes. That’s the biggest question. A question whose answer answers many others.
Next year’s sophomores need to show more improvement than this year’s versions.
Johnny Frazier and Matt Dayes.
No complaints with Canada, big picture ones, anyway. Like the OL coach. Like S&C. Need playmakers. Need someone at LB to step up shine; they were disappointments in 2015. That could be said of others. Need leaders, period.
As mentioned before, 2016 is DD’s proving ground. We’ll find out what we have next year.
Dr Yow, I’d have Jeff Brohm high on that list you keep tucked away in your drawer. Real high.
tjfoose1ParticipantMcKever. It’s about time. He came in as a WR and was converted to DE last year only to disappear in 2015.
Some called for him to be moved back to offense about 7 games ago.
tjfoose1ParticipantWe are significantly worse than I thought we were, and I wasn’t exactly rose-colored glasses about us.
I think it more likely that Miss St is significantly better than many think.
Maybe some of both.
tjfoose1ParticipantI got Cowbells for 22 pts on my
Bowl Mania picks. They got more and better horses with more experience against better opponents.
Plus, Jacoby can’t throw worth a lick in wet weather.
I don’t expect it to be close.
tjfoose1ParticipantCan we make a run at this guy and get him involved in our athletic department at some time.
No.
tjfoose1ParticipantWe find out what kind of coach we have next year, with W/L ratio being only one metric.
And enough of this imaginary Chuck history. There’s a reason why the only job he could get was with a Akron team coached by Terry Bowden.
tjfoose1ParticipantIt’s no longer a fan support site. It’s become a place to bash NC State Athletic teams and coaches, and those who refuse to do so.
That, and a place where a select few choose to express an attitude and arrogance not so dissimilar from a power mad HOA or a coward with a badge and a gun, only from the safety and security that exists behind a keyboard.
THAT is what has killed the traffic on this site.
tjfoose1ParticipantThat was just a general commentary on the Sad State of affairs around here for many months….
You and Rick should take a selfie in front of a mirror.
tjfoose1ParticipantGiven the supporting cast and the propensity of all things Wolfpack, I’d go with Tender Vittles.
tjfoose1ParticipantJust my educated guess. The risk of potential issues isn’t worth the attempt.
One in the hand vs two in the bush.
Grier is understandably going to want to play immediately, but there’s already a QB on the roster that is expecting the opportunity he’s earned.
Sends wrong message to entire team and future recruits.
Now if there had been QB issues all along, it would be different. But McClendon was recruited by Doeren for this offense. There was a plan and progression. A promised opportunity. He’s done everything asked of him.
Doeren isnt Saban, or Meyer, or even Swinney. He doesn’t have an established track record with players. McClendon is his first recruited and groomed QB. This is Doeren’s first QB transition.
Actively recruiting a replacement before he’s even given a chance? Bad message. To everyone. Not worth the risk, short term, or big picture long-term.
And that’s assuming Grier would even commit. Damage is done, IMO, just with the attempt.
If not for ALL the above circumstances, Id say go for it.
But as it is, at most, I’d give Grier a call and say he’s welcome to come in and compete, if he’s interested. And that, only after a heads up to McClendon. Probably make the call with McClendon right next to me.
But as stated above, Grier is going to want to go somewhere where he can play immediately, with slim to zero chance that he wouldn’t. So what’s the chances he would come to State anyway? Is that chance worth it?
tjfoose1ParticipantDon’t see him coming here though. Don’t see Doeren trying to get him to either.
tjfoose1ParticipantHis uncle Jason did attend State during the Sheridan years. I believe his was briefly on the team.
tjfoose1ParticipantJust ask Cat what it’s like to be a phenom PG, alone, on this team.
Right now, I’d venture he’s loving it. More so than at any other point in his NC State career.
tjfoose1ParticipantTotally totally get that but if talent wins games and if recruiting was going well (he was still pulling in the top NC talent) then I think his leash should have been longer.
There is absolutely no proof at all especially considering he was still recruiting well up until the end.
What’s with all the rewriting history all of a sudden?
Chuck pissed of people everywhere he went, and that includes high schools.
Once Holliday left, Chuck was done. Actually, he was probably done prior to that, but the departure of Doc sealed it. The simultaneous jump in Florida’s recruiting and the fall off in west Raleigh wasn’t a coincidence. Neither was the drop in staff ‘harmony and effectiveness’.
And in the end, he was neither winning nor pulling in top talent. His leash was plenty long. Probably too long, and he hung himself with it.
He was a salesman, a good one for a time. Especially when it came to recruiting. But he never delivered the goods nor could he recruit across the board. His target market eventually caught on and stopped buying the snake oil.
Even ‘his’ last two recruiting successes weren’t his doing. He didn’t want either one. 2 star Irving was forced on him and 2 star Wilson was an accident, an afterthought that landed in State’s lap due to the idiot that was Bunting.
Amato loved NC State and I appreciate his contributions, but let’s not start creating fables and myths.
tjfoose1ParticipantWith Henderson out and only one true guard playing, State is trying to figure itself out. Apparently, so are the bigs. In the mean time, the Wolfpack simply is not very good.
But there’s no telling, not yet, how good High Point is. Along with a 3 point loss to the Wolfpack, they’ve got a 4 point loss to Texas Tech and a 3 point loss to UGA. The rest of their games ended in W’s for High Point. Whatever that means.
tjfoose1ParticipantLike clockwork
tjfoose1ParticipantYow has yet to fire a coach she hired, right?
I think that’s right, but she’s only been at NC State for 5 years.
tjfoose1ParticipantHe… I wouldn’t mind that happening at all. Our offense if pretty predictable, and DD ain’t firing his staff, regardless.
That’s funny.
Both statements.
