My point in all this….these guys ARE WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE. These guys weren’t willing to play the role that our roster demanded of them and had to go explore other options. It happens, it’s a product of the generation. Blame entitlement, blame AAU ball, blame the money, F it…Blame Obama.

-Harris- Do you remember his dad? He wanted him to be like Tobias so bad. Saying he “Shut down” Thomas Robinson in the Sweet 16 game. Did he live up to daddy’s expectations?

-Raymond- Honestly I completely forgot about this kid. Not crap talking him but I don’t have many plugs into Middle Tennessee State. But given the fact that he chose them it seems that he understood and accepted who he was.

-Lewis- Another guy I rooted for. We hoped he was smart enough and crafty enough to overcome obvious deficiencies. No, no, no…he’s not too small. He’s a starting ACC point guard in a backup point guard’s body. I thought so, some of you did too, so did he. Early signs are that we were all wrong.
-Purvis- A victim of the overhype. A “diaper dandy” that was supposed to be one and done. 4 years later and he’s not even a 5 and done.

Rye…that’s fine. But ask yourself this…were any of them MORE than what they were while they were at State?
-Painter I can’t fault at all, family comes first. But his season at ODU was not the fairy tale ending I’m sure he hoped for coming off a sky high season at State. Big man on campus, ACC big, swinging d*ck leading ODU to a bad season that saw their coaching staff flushed (I work with a lot of ODU alum that kept me in the know).
-Harrow- Never was the savior he thought he was. Hell I took up for him on these very boards but like someone said, when he was given his moment he just wasn’t up for it. He got beat out of the Kentucky job by Julius Mays, the same kids who left NC State to make was for him. The irony…wait? Is that irony?

-Harris- Here’s a guy that had a stage mom if I ever saw it. Do you remember his dad? Thinking that he was an NBA player like big brother? Saying that he “shut down” Thomas Robinson in the Sweet Sixteen game? Did he ever live up to daddy’s expectations? Is he going to the league?

I don’t think ODU went to the dance with Painter, Harrow played at Georgia State, Harris also didn’t take Auburn to the dance.

“Raymond, Painter, Harris, Lewis and Purvis were all on teams that made the NCAA tournament. Raymond and Lewis contributed lightly but the rest were starters.

Harrow never played for Gott and left when Sid was fired. He had the stint at Kentucky, then went to Georgia Southern and had a nice run. Ended up in the tournament there playing 2 guard.

TDT was right when he left — a recruiter and not a coach. People didn’t want to listen then, but I think people are starting to see the things that were obvious in year two…….”

I don’t think any of this is right…

“6. Year 4 and still don’t have a PG of ACC quality.”

So….we are just ignoring the Lorenzo Brown years? Trevor Lacy isn’t an ACC quality PG? Am I reading this right?

I keep hearing Archie’s name brought up. Is there intel out there that suggests we have a shot at him? Even with Gott’s existing contract?

Or are we just hoping we get a hometown discount?

Recruiting is fine. Abu is coming on and Washington is becoming a go-to scorer. We have everyone in the rotation returning next year except Turner and we already have his backfill. There aren’t any minutes available for a freshmen next year so why throw out an offer just to burn it? And we have all seen what happens to a freshman who doesn’t play how much/when/or the position he wants.

Pakfanistan is right. Rick is wrong.

I don’t see any early entry candidates right now. I don’t see any NBA prospects period, if I’m being honest.

Nonetheless, these are the players Gott recruited. If they are the problem it’s his responsibility.

Did he not bring Calvin around? Did he allow Rodney Purvis to hold him hostage? Did he not sack Ryan Harrow in favor of Lo Brown at the point as soon as he got in the door? They are only a problem if you don’t deal with it. You can’t predict with 100% certainty how a kid is going to respond to Division 1 college basketball.

^Great point. Abu goes up soft, Freeman can’t finish with his left so he shoots back into trouble and BJ freaks when the double comes.

Even when they go strong they go 0-fer from the free throw line. Not good.

Harris is a certified baller. His dad was a certified Nutter Butter. Do you remember him totally mis-remembering Harris’s stat line from the Sweet 16 game? He was playing behind our most consistent performer and one of our best 3 point threats of all time.

    The minutes weren’t there dad…sorry.

Gott’s teams consistently underachieve based on each team’s talent level.

The Sweet 16 team didn’t underachieve and last year’s team didn’t underachieve. The “blessed” season was a gong show and if this team doesn’t make the tourney it’s a failure. So I can’t give you “consistently”.

In this day of instant gratification, parent coaches, entitlement and sissified athletes you can’t stop kids from transferring. You just can’t. Duke loses players, Kentucky loses players, UNC loses players.

Most of those transfers had someone else in their ear. I mean just look at the comments on this board. Anyone who has ever been a volunteer coach thinks they’re Doc Rivers. No wonder these kids don’t know who to listen to.

So stop saying it is not a big deal to lose to the number three team when that team has flown by us in the pecking order in the ACC. That is a big deal.

Every other traditional basketball power in our conference (excluding Duke) could say the same thing. I don’t think anyone with a brain is looking to question Jim Boehim or Roy Williams on how they let that happen. This is basketball. You are always a few early NBA entries away from the cellar and a few special players from the penthouse. A two year sample size is not enough to say UVA will remain a perennial powerhouse.

    ^^Spot on with everything.

I’m not in love with Cat’s game but talking about pulling him off the floor is crazy.

“So the justification for why it is OK to lose this game is because we are playing the number three team?”

    Yes. On the road. Yes.

@BJD95 I agree. After seeing ECU push Duke to the limit in Cameron I was terrified that we were going to be swept by ECU in B-Ball and Football. I enjoyed that game so much I went home and watched the replay. My face hurt I was smiling so much.

There is parity in college basketball. Don’t take wins for granted.

@Wulfpack did you think Syracuse entering our conference, Duke getting the next Carmelo and us losing our entire starting line up was the short cut to becoming a title contender?

I read some of these comments and I wonder what some of your expectations were at the beginning of the year. If you aren’t pleasantly surprised by this team I think you may need to re-calibrate.

As far as not fairing well against the zone I don’t see how you say that. I have seen us slash though, shoot over, lob over, dribble through and offensive rebound against the zone. In fact I think we were a little surprised by not seeing the zone that much last night.

Tennessee stomped a Virginia team that I believe was a top 25 squad not too long ago. After the first 3 teams this conference is wide open. Everybody relax.
