ParticipantMy wife, who is a die hard Longhorn (our dog is named Vince) and her district’s teacher of the year, was giving a speech in that capacity on Monday. Her superintendent is an Aggie and chose to introduce her as “the only Longhorn to be called to the podium recently.” I kept telling her they could claim Garret Gilbert.

Participant‘Stick I have noted that Jordan Lyles has pitched well for the Rockies. The Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo is something everyone in the world should do at least once.
Ryan Ftizpatrick. That should make all of the Schaub haters happy next year.

ParticipantMore Wolpackers drafted than Longhorns. I think Dontae will have a decent career.

ParticipantAlmost 24 hours for the Houston Texans and their fans to contemplate taking the slam dunk obvious choice with the first pick in the second round even though he happens to be Derek Carr. This is way better than any reality show.

ParticipantI just don’t know how you can be an NBA owner and hold those kind of views.
This gets the Libertarian streak in me going. The answer to the question above is that you can hold these views as long as you follow the rules / laws that are set forth to protect people from discrimination.
The NBA has every right to do what they did. They have by-laws and terms of ownership that give them that power and they are certainly free to exercise those powers. I think the best thing you can do to combat racism is to give the bigots a mike. Their small mindedness and hatred will do them in.
I believe that women have a capacity for understanding and compassion which man structurally does not have, does not have it because he cannot have it. He’s just incapable of it. – Barbara Jordan
Now does the Barbara Jordan quote spew more or less bigotry than the quote that got Sterling banned from the NBA for life? By the logical extension of the argument above how can someone who holds those views be a US Ambassador and a faculty member of a public university? The problem I have with the precedent that has been established is that it will never be used when a liberal crosses the lines of decency and spews hate speech at a conservative. This is very very dangerous ground.

ParticipantThis plan will be the death of the SEC as the unquestioned, ten times better than every other conference, every week is a killer college football conference. Once they play somebody other than UAB in the non-conference people will begin to see how they really stack up against other conferences (see Duke vs. Texas A&M).

ParticipantThree semesters of calculus plus a history class and a couple of university studies classes.
I loved Harrelson Hall. I used to go find empty classrooms there to study in. I liked working problems on the chalkboard and then studying the solutions. The spiral ramp in the center was pure genius. I hate to hear it will meet its maker soon.

ParticipantI’m not sure where you got the 3100 figure but there have been a lot of three game stretches over the last decade where the Coogs didn’t draw 3100. I hope this kid makes it big with all he’s been through, but UH has a long way to go.

ParticipantNext year is all about the sophomore bigs.
Can they rebound?
Can they score?
Can anybody get them the ball?
Can one of them become Howell/Painter good at the mid range jumper?I think the guard play will be adequate. The big improvement next year will be that we won’t have to rely on FOUR freshmen.

ParticipantSince Wulf has broached the Zen discussion I will have to say that I really enjoy the solitude you get when you knock out 4-6 miles starting at around 4:15. The runner’s high is very real. I also tell people that running a marathon is easy, but training for a marathon is hard. That’s what makes the finish so sweet. Delayed gratification is one of the great life lessons that distance running teaches. I first discovered how much I enjoyed running in PE 100 during the Fall of 1979.

ParticipantI wouldn’t call this common, but it’s not what I would call terribly unusual. The Half Marathon distance has exploded over the past 8-10 years and when you have 50,000 people every weekend running half marathons, 2-3 per year are going to have serious medical issues during their race. Running does not make one immune to genetics.
I had a suspicious EKG during my annual physical a few years back and it was suggested to me that I go see a cardiologist. The cardiologist said it was a toss-up in his mind as to whether or not I should get a stress test. That weekend three people died running the Half/Full Marathon events in Detroit. I decided to do the stress test.
There is absolutely no comparison between running a half marathon and running a full marathon. The two haves of a full are the first 20 miles and the last six. Now that the youngest kid has declared his intention to toe the line in Houston next January for the full, I’m going to have to get back in full marathon shape so It’s going to be a long hot summer

ParticipantThis is a disturbing pattern if you are a Maryland fan. Turgeon must have all the people skills of the Attila The Hun if he has three players or 20% of the entire program leaving the year they are moving to the BIG. Debbie Yow has to be the root cause for this somehow. The John Feinstein book about the TUR-DUNGEON in the basement of Cole Field House will be a bestseller for sure.

ParticipantRoy have a few weeks or a few months left?
I don’t remember the exact sequence of events but there was some point in this whole sleazy saga that Roy either got scared or got religion on the paper classes. Since he didn’t report anything, I’m going with scared. From that point forward the number of roundball players in the fake classes dropped dramatically. That pattern alone is enough to make lots of people believe that Roy absolutely knew what was going on.
Now for those of you who think there might be meaningful penalties applied to the branch campus in Orange County, I still say you are going to be very disappointed. The NCAA has spoken on this subject already and they are not going to reverse field. They may be the only organization on Earth more arrogant than The Branch Campus.

ParticipantBSW stepped up big in the game Buckets missed last season. And he was much more consistent in the “second scorer” role late. Playing at his more natural 3 position will help tremedously, as it did with original Scott Wood.
Best of luck to Warren. The son of a solid Wolfpack player became a real star and he seems like a class young man to boot. I don’t think he’s ready to contribute in the NBA yet, but once he improves his shot (see Clyde Drexler) he could easily be a poor man’s KD.
Playing BSW at the 3 puts a tremendous amount of pressure on the 4 & 5 to do almost all of the rebounding. TJ’s rebounding from the 3 spot was key to keeping us from getting totally destroyed on the boards this past season. That’s the one thing that makes me nervous about BSW at the 3. I’m not sure that KW will ever have the shot or the handles to play there but you might be able to steal some minutes by using him there for 3-4 minute stretches.
I love this sophomore class. If Cat doesn’t bolt for the NBA after next year, we might be unreal in 15-16. I don’t think being really, really good is out of the question for 14-15.

ParticipantLooking forward to meeting Dr. Woodson next week as the Houston Chapter of the NC State Alumni Association hosts a reception for him at Space Center Houston. The head of the Physics Department is supposed to speak. Let’s see how many of the 600+ Alumni in the greater Houston slug their way down the Gulf Fwy for the event.
As for the brand, our neighbor, who thinks she wants to major in Bio-Medical Engineering is strongly considering NC State even though her mom went to Wake and her dad is an Aggie.

ParticipantArian Foster is severely damaged goods
And Andre isn’t?
Back surgery for a massively overused back is way worse than the stuff Andre Brown has gone through. He doesn’t have anywhere near the mileage on him that Foster does.
According to the Chronicle he signed with the Texans.

ParticipantThe game Lewis played against Xavier was one of the best floor games I’ve seen from an NC State PG since Corchiani. Lewis and Cat would have been great to have on a baseball team because you could have platooned them. (just like Des and BSW)
I would have preferred that Lewis embrace his role as the back-up and play out his four years in Raleigh. If he was going to be a cry baby, then it’s better that he accepted the demotion by going to a lesser program to be a bigger fish in a smaller pond.
One thing you learn in life is that even though the situation you are currently in may really suck, you can still learn from it. Learning how to put the team first and how to be adaptable are both traits that serve people well over the long haul. If 40% of D-1 Men’s Basketball players are transferring during their first two years, then there’s not much of that going on anymore.
The real shame in all of this is that Tyler couldn’t just keep the lip zipped and display a little class on the way out of the door. Gott has been way more tolerant than Lewis deserves.

ParticipantThis would be a very good spot for Andre Brown. Arian Foster is severely damaged goods and Andre Brown would get a lot of carries in Houston.

ParticipantThe best the UCLA High Post Offense has looked since Gott arrived was down the stretch his first year. Lo Brown figured out how to make the reads, we had Painter shooting the jumper from the FT line, and both Howell and Calvin who could go one-on one from the low post. Brown was also very good at being able to break down his man late in the shot clock. That is a critical role in the HPO under Gott. Cat has the athletic ability to fill this role eventually. He has to figure out the mental part which he did show signs of doing late in the year.
Gott started the year with his defensive guards (Cat & Lee) as the starters but they were so awful on offense with the 1 vs. 2/3 drives, that he eventually had to go offense and play T&T.
Keys to 14-15 Success
Cat being able to run the team without the TO binges.
Frenchie and/or KW consistently knocking down the Painter shots.
Some combination of Anya/Frenchie/Abu being able to operate on the blocks and score consistently.

ParticipantThe offensive foul on Meeeechegan today was so ridiculous, but the call against Arizona was one of the worst clutch calls I’ve ever seen. Wisconsin defender just plows into the guy on his drive to the basket and it’s an offensive foul.
I’m available to do a clinic on the block/charge. I absolutely understand the principles involved in the call better than the average ref I watched this weekend.
Wilbekan and the PG Harrison CONSISTENTLY lowered their shoulders while driving to initiate contact and they got a block called every time. If that was the correct call then the defender has no shot to offer up any defense. It just drives me nuts to see that level of incompetence in the regional finals.
Last complaint. The Final Four is in Arlington, Irving, or the DFW Metroplex. The North Texas BS is stupid.

ParticipantSpeaking of what’s between the kids ears…
This kid had the attitude and heart Mr. Dog spoke of –
This is what we need… not just at Point Guard…<br>
… but at every position on the floor and on the bench…I was unfortunate enough to watch him play his adjustment season after JUCO. After watching Sidney for four years the transition to Spud was ugly. That gives me hope for improvement from Des and Cat. Gott did an incredible job cobbling together minutes from a collection of severely flawed players.
