Minutes for everyone except DSJ are going to drop from what they are today. With Mav, Omer, and Kapita all (re-) entering the mix, the 4 guard lineup will become a lot more rare, and that should help the defense and rebounding. Also, with all of the freshmen, and especially with multiple players missing games early, I expect another 2 months of practice and games will help them improve considerably.

I like these things so far:

    – The team has been tested yet is 5-1 with the loss to a very good team on a neutral floor while short-handed.
    – The team has gotten a lot of minutes with the 4 guard lineup, and we know it can be effective, at least offensively, if/when we need to go to it.
    – The team has shown it can and will run whenever possible, and they are good at it.
    – We have seen 6 new players so far (counting Henderson as new), and every one of them has shown he can play and will likely contribute this season. With Omer still to come.
    – DSJ is living up to the hype.

Sometimes, when it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it’s a duck.

This. Barring a miracle, DD should be fired at the end of the season. Whether she wants to or not, Yow should be initiating her search now.

Since you are not concerned about the intolerance and discrimination supported and enabled by this law, there is no point in continuing the discussion.

Tau, do you mean that my wife is being ridiculous because she doesn’t want some pervert who claims to identify as a woman wants to go into the women’s bathroom with her and expose himself?

If a pervert wants to act like a pervert, he or she will do it regardless of what laws are in place. I think that is well established by the history of perverts and perversion.

This law does nothing to change that, but it has done harm to a class of NC citizens and has already had lasting negative effects on the state economy, with more likely to follow. This law clearly demonstrates a message of intolerance and discrimination. That is never the right thing in our form of Government, no matter what the intentions. IMO it is an embarrassment and was completely irresponsible for every politician involved.

So… no, your wife is not being ridiculous to not want perverts in the bathroom with her. But anyone who uses that as their rationale for supporting this law is absolutely being ridiculous.

The legislation is ridiculous on multiple levels and all politicians involved should be impeached or voted out of office.

A 20 game schedule will break down like this:

    2 Defined rivalries (UNC/WF) x 2 games = 4 games
    4 Home/Home matchups = 8 games
    8 x 1 game only = 8 games.

This totals to 14 opponents and 20 games. They could do away with the defined rivalries, but I doubt that they will.

I would expect that this would move 2 to 3 conference games from each team into Nov/Dec….hopefully Dec. It will be interesting to see if the ACC network has any noticeable impact on the quality of the OOC schedules (I’m looking at you, Clemson and VT).

This sets up perfectly for 3 divisions of 5 teams. Play every team in your division twice and every team out of division once.
    Divisions:

South – FSU, Miami, GT, Clemson, WF
Central – State, UNC, Duke, UVA, VT
North – ND, BC, Syracuse, Pitt, Louisville

Not ideal to split WF from the Big 4, but the alternative is to split UVA and VT. I assume this won’t happen because it would create imbalance in basketball, i.e., the Central division would have more elite teams, and it would screw up ACC tournament seeding.

    3. 5 star C Omer Yurtseven commits to State.

    Check.

    4. Top 25 juco transfer SF Keanu Pinder commits to State.

    Nope.

    3. 5 star C Omer Yurtseven gets cleared by the NCAA to play the full season.
    6. A backup PG who can play backup minutes without disaster commits to State. (Perhaps KJ Smith, who visited today.)
    7. Freeman redshirts.
    8. Henderson is granted a 6th year (i.e., granted a medical redshirt for 2015-16).
    9. DSJ and Yurtseven live up to the hype, and both are 2017 NBA lottery picks. This has a positive effect on future recruiting, and Gott lands an elite 2017 recruiting class, which makes up for losing DSJ, Yurtseven, Abu, and Anya.
    10. Meanwhile, the rotation of DSJ, Dorn, Henderson, Rowan, Abu, Yurtseven, Anya, et al. stays healthy, and State finishes in the top 4 in the ACC and makes deep ACC and NCAA tourney runs.
    11. Despite these things, Gott’s contract is not extended.
    12. We have an elite recruiting class that contains a starting PG and two quality big mean, at least one of whom will start. That plus Henderson, Dorn, Rowan, Freeman, Pinder, Kirk, and Hicks for the 2017-18 season means the team is both talented and deep.
    13. And it builds from there…

    Don’t know yet.

But the best case scenario could actually be a bit better today than it was when I posted this. CG Malik Newman has announced he will transfer from Mississippi State. He was a top 5-10 overall player in his class last year. His final list of universities was Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Kentucky, LSU, Kansas, and N.C. State. It seems reasonable to assume the SEC schools are out, which could mean it would be down to Kansas and State. With the expectation that DSJ, Henderson, Abu, Yurtseven, and Anya could all be gone after this season, that would leave a lot of playing time and shots available for Newman, probably more than Kansas could offer.

Add #6 to the checked off list. So far, we are progressing nicely down the best case scenario path I posted back when most thought the sky was falling.

    Comments/questions on the OP:

    1. Henderson is listed as a 2G/Wing, Dorn is listed simply as a 2G. Won’t Dorn or Henderson back up DSJ? Is Dorn not capable of playing the wing?

    2. “I can’t imagine there is other option but to try to take Gibson Johnson a forward from Salt Lake Community College.” This is written as if it is undesirable to take Johnson. Why?

    3. “…the coaching staff’s inability to retain solid upperclassmen contributors continues to set State apart from the elite programs…” But State isn’t an elite program, so why are you comparing to those programs? How does State’s outgoing transfer rate compare to the non-elite programs? That would be a better barometer IMO. As others have noted, it would also be a better barometer to account for the incoming transfers as well. Among non-elite programs, I expect Gott’s record is okay when accounting for both incoming and outgoing transfers.

This is really kind of bad news is it not. What if the Pack is good next year? That might mean Gott will have more breathing room and not be as easy to gott rid of.

This is the problem with some “fans.” Some would rather see State lose to fit their agenda than see them succeed and miss their agenda.

So this is the part when we measure someone’s “fanhood” by how much they agree with your opinion…

I guess you never hoped we would lose out with Lowe so we could get rid of that weight around our neck. If not I guarantee you are in the minority as anyone with a brain knew he was never going to win anything.

Correct. I have never hoped for State to lose any game. If you have, you aren’t much of a fan. Sorry if the truth hurts.

Whatever, only a fool wanted Lowe around.

So you opened by criticizing me for criticizing others because they don’t agree with my opinion. I respond to say I don’t agree with your opinion, so you call me a fool. So not only are you a jerk, you are also a hypocrite.

The only surprise is that you would show it so clearly in black and white.

I never said I wanted Lowe around. As others have correctly pointed out, not wanting a coach around does not equate to hoping State loses. Do you really not get that?

Seeing a Silver Lining after a loss is a far cry from “Hoping for a loss.”

I have no respect for those pulling for a loss. NONE.

…But that should be evident…And yeah. It does reflect on your fanship, self-aware, or not.

    This.

Ooops sorry my bad. I thought the statement was so outrageous and over the top that it would be taken as it was intended to be sarcasm.

And this is why I said “some fans” and did not direct my response at you, since I recognized it could be sarcasm from you but feel it holds true for others. And Rick has now proved my point.

Russell was playing pro ball as he had before but he always came back for spring football.

Wilson never played pro ball before the summer of 2010. (He was drafted by the Rockies on June 8, 2010.) Also, he missed spring football in 2010. I assume he also missed most/all of it in 2008 and 2009.

So this was TOB being inconsistent in how he handled this issue. Strictly on the merits of the value of Wilson and spring football, it doesn’t really make sense that TOB allowed it in prior years and then chose spring football before Wilson’s 5th season at State to be a dealbreaker. Obviously, he didn’t make that decision strictly on the merits of Wilson and spring football, he made it to guarantee himself two years of Glennon.

While I didn’t agree with it, the decision is understandable on its merits.

But in the spring the decision was totally Russell’s

How do you define “spring” here? TOB released Wilson from his scholarship in April 2011. I think of April as being part of the spring.

    Tau837

Some aspects of Wilson’s speech were bizarre, but that doesn’t change the fact that TOB made a bad decision. I thought so at the time, and I still do.

IMO it is likely Abu and Anya will be back. We’ll know soon enough.

Assuming both are back, the biggest key to the scenario I laid out is getting Yurtseven. Getting him would really stand to make this year’s team a very strong team. A rotation of DSJ, Dorn, Henderson, Rowan, Abu, Anya, and Yurtseven (if healthy) should be a really strong core, regardless of the other players Gott ultimately brings in, whether Pinder, Hicks, Dylan Smith, KJ Smith, or whoever.

If that group plays well, it could make a difference for 2017 recruiting. Gott currently has 28 offers out for that class, according to Verbal Commits. There is no reason to assume he won’t sign some good players for that class, and playing well in 2016-17 and placing two players in the first round of the draft can only help.

We are in it for Yurtseven, so it is not completely unrealistic to think we get him.

There is so much negativity in the discussion about the program that I feel like posting a best case scenario (that doesn’t involve firing Gott this offseason). Here it is:

    1. Abu returns to play the 2016-17 season at State.
    2. Anya returns to play the 2016-17 season at State.
    3. 5 star C Omer Yurtseven commits to State and gets cleared by the NCAA to play the full season. (He visited over the weekend.)
    4. Top 25 juco transfer SF Keanu Pinder commits to State. Late rotation player (i.e., minutes, but not too many).
    5. 3 star PF Darius Hicks commits to State. (He is supposedly deciding Friday, and is supposedly down to State and Cincy.) Depth player, building for future, answering the call for more 3 star types.
    6. A backup PG who can play backup minutes without disaster commits to State. (Perhaps KJ Smith, who visited today.)
    7. Freeman redshirts.
    8. Henderson is granted a 6th year (i.e., granted a medical redshirt for 2015-16).
    8. DSJ and Yurtseven live up to the hype, and both are 2017 NBA lottery picks. This has a positive effect on future recruiting, and Gott lands an elite 2017 recruiting class, which makes up for losing DSJ, Yurtseven, Abu, and Anya.
    9. Meanwhile, the rotation of DSJ, Dorn, Henderson, Rowan, Abu, Yurtseven, Anya, et al. stays healthy, and State finishes in the top 4 in the ACC and makes deep ACC and NCAA tourney runs.
    10. Despite these things, Gott’s contract is not extended.

    12. And it builds from there…

OK, I realize that scenario has about the same odds of happening as me winning the lottery. But it is more fun to think about than how much fun Rick is at parties.

Regarding recruiting – it was definitely solid up until last year… But riddle me this – how do “solid” classes end up leaving us in such a pickle these last 2 years.

The truth is that because of our defections we were always on the cusp of what finally happened on 2016 since Gott “arrove” in Raleigh. We are in a similar position for 2017.

My analysis of his classes led me to believe that Gott wasnt signing enough guys to be able to withstand average to above average early departures – that are just part and parcel of the college basketball landscape these days.

I generally agree. Particularly in retrospect, he has not allocated his scholarships properly. If nothing else, we need about 2 more Josh Davis/Lennard Freeman types per year — guys who have the potential to help the program, if only as depth role players, and who were not highly ranked recruits.

I do think Lacey’s departure was a surprise and made a huge difference last season, especially combined with Henderson’s injury. The Washington transfer is more of an expected departure than Lacey’s was. I’m not saying that excuses Gott for not being better prepared. Hopefully it was a wakeup call that his approach was too risky.

But had Lacey not departed, I assume we don’t get Rowan, so there is a silver lining going forward. Glass half full and all that.

Also, his reliance on transfers really exasperates this. In general – the transfers we have brought in have helped the program. However, these kids allocate a scholarship even when they don’t suit up. Again, this is fine if you don’t have a high early departure rate and / or your roster is usually highly talented – but we don’t fall into that category.

You mean it exacerbates it… I completely disagree with this.

For one thing, all of Gott’s rosters have been talented. Last year’s roster did not lack talent, it lacked bodies/depth.

Non post-grad transfers are great “recruits” for multiple reasons:

    – They are unlikely to transfer again, so their early departure risk is limited to leaving college basketball early. Granted, we’ve seen this happen with Lacey, but it should happen less often than first transfers, which we have seen from Harrow, Raymond, Painter, Harris, Purvis, Lewis, Washington, and the twins during Gott’s tenure.

    – They already have college basketball experience and are older and more mature. Theoretically, this makes them more capable and more coachable. They already left one situation, so they are less likely to complain about minutes/role.

    – They get a redshirt season to adjust to the team’s coaching/philosophy, the campus environment, and get established academically.

    – They contribute in practice, which should theoretically make the active players better.

The fact that Gott does not allocate enough scholarships is a separate issue. If he was using 10+ of them every season, we would have sufficient depth every season and would have no issue using 1-2 scholarships on redshirt players.

Hopefully there’s a philosophy shift ongoing and we won’t see what we saw in 2016 again and we will move away from isolation and improve our defense.

    Agree.
