Their strength (run offense) is dominating our strength (run defense) so far

Finally, some life on offense… and all it took was getting JaySam his first touch

Booo, I don’t like that call.

Me either. He turned his head to look for the ball and actually could have made a play on it.

McCallum: Agreed. There’s a lot of ball left to be played and the ND/Clemson stretch for us is brutal. We’re also closing with 2 teams we’ve historically not played well against (UNC and BC) and one that we find ways to lose to (WF).

    Over the past 3 seasons:

    1-0 vs. Notre Dame
    0-3 vs. Clemson
    1-2 vs. BC
    3-0 vs. Wake
    2-1 vs. UNC

7-6 overall against these teams, with 2 losses to this group in each of the past 3 seasons. Obviously, our team this season is better than in the past 3 seasons, a lot better than in 2014 and 2015.

The fact that we beat Notre Dame last season and should have beaten Clemson’s national championship team in Death Valley, combined with the current 6 game winning streak with wins over Louisville and at FSU, shows that we are good enough to win every one of our remaining games. Notre Dame and Clemson are going to be tough, but I’m not worried about the other three.

While Wake appears to be improved, none of the Wake games the past 3 seasons were close. The “we find ways to lose” to Wake comment is rooted in history that does not apply to this team this season.

The fact that BC has beaten us 2 out of the last 3 seasons, including last season, pretty much ensures that our team will not look past them, which should ensure we beat them.

And UNC is hated UNC. Our team will be up to destroy them, and they aren’t good. It should be a beatdown.

Even if we lose to Notre Dame and Clemson, I see our team as being very motivated to win the rest and secure a 9 win regular season.

I’m not sure when COY voting is conducted. Is it after regular season concludes or after conference championship games? Assuming the former:

If we finish the regular season 11-1, DD should be ACC and national COY.
If we finish the regular season 10-2, he should be ACC COY.
If we finish the regular season 9-3, his shot at ACC COY depends on how the rest of the teams finish.

Regarding Chubb, he ranked #9 on ESPN’s most recent expert poll. 12 players received votes in the poll, including one other defensive player (Minkah Fitzpatrick, Alabama), who ranked #7.

If we were to win out in the regular season, and assuming Chubb played really well the rest of the way, I could see him possibly reaching the top 5, meaning he could be invited to the ceremony. If we beat Notre Dame and he has a big game, our media department should start promoting him.

Why, after Bambard kicked the ball through the endzone numerous times in the first half did we resort to the pooch kickoff a couple of times in the second half? We gave them the ball at their 45 on the last one. What the heck was the reasoning? Was the wind strong enough to keep Bambard’s kicks out of the endzone or are we insecure about our special teams coverage on kickoffs after USC?

    Wondered the same thing.

I thought that last FG attempt after the timeouts by Syracuse would have been an excellent time to run a trick play and go for a TD. Syracuse had just watched us line up and attempt the kick multiple times and might have been asleep on a possible trick play there. And, as it turns out, we would not have lost any points if it was unsuccessful…

State defense needs to stop having the second guy on a sack pile on. This most recent one wasn’t bad, but sooner or later they will get penalized for that.

That said, nice defensive stand here.

My God,… the ref gave us one!!!

Officiating has favored the Pack so far today. Roughing the passer on Finley was iffy; two very close replay reviews (Samuels TD and FSU fumble) went State’s way; no flag for roughing FSU QB when it could have been called for a late hit on the ground; DPI call on Finley’s interception.

Seems weird, worried that it will flip the other way at some critical point.

Looked like a shoulder injury for Tate. That should hurt the FSU offense the rest of the way, since he has caught more than half of their completions, including their only TD.

Hate that Meyers did that flip and essentially cost the team a FG to close the half.

Pros: 2:1 in plays ran and total offense

This wasn’t really a pro. SC scored on a kickoff return, and thus had no plays or total offense on the drive that should have been, and they took over on short fields twice and scored TDs, which held down their number of plays and total offense. Yards per play were similar for both teams.

Despite all of the issues (i.e., kickoff return TD, missed FG, 2 fumbles), we were in the game and should have tied it at 35. On the second to last drive, there were 2 officiating errors and JaySam dropped a pass that would have gone for a first down, all leading to a turnover on downs. Had those things not happened, would we have scored? Maybe.

On the last drive, Meyers dropped a perfectly placed pass that would have had us at about the SC 33 or so with 2:44 remaining. Instead, we had to burn more than another minute to reach that field position. Without the drop, maybe that extra time would have made the difference. As it was, by the team we reached the red zone, some plays were rushed with the clock running, and running was basically off the table. Again, would we have scored with more time? Maybe.

I don’t really see any coaching errors in those two situations. Players failed to make a couple of plays they should have made, and officials failed to make a couple of calls they should have made. Those things may have made the difference despite everything else.

I thought 8-4 (5-3). We can still make that. To do so means that ND just became a must win game. No pressure there. Just like we did last year, we put ourselves in a hole early. The season isn’t over but it is an uphill climb.

I agree with this. If this team is who we thought (hoped) they were, we will go 8-3 from here.

Ahem, let’s acknowledge that management put the pieces there. We like to say that Doeren is incompetent but like Hale said, but for a decent kicker State could have been 10-2 in 2016.

Do you not see the contradiction in these two sentences? ‘Management’ is who chose the kickers we had last season, so lacking a decent kicker was on ‘management.’

Furthermore, ‘management’ knew we didn’t have a decent kicker but failed to fully adjust offensive playcalling to address that.

All of that collectively establishes a pecking order. State is not able to compete with IU on many of the items I listed. Case closed.

Case opened back up. Archie is an NC State alum. We decided better to take a big gamble than a little gamble and didn’t pay the man. It’s not hard to connect the dots, judge.

You are assuming facts not in evidence. I’m fine agreeing to disagree on this.

If you read the article by PackMentality linked in the “In Defense” entry, you can find some actual statistical analysis of UNCW’s defense and places it in the context of the CAA.

PM’s article was good, but there was also a lot of quality commentary below it that provided some good counterpoints.

UNCW defense improved in Keatts’ first two seasons. In his second season, he had 4 players 6’8″ or taller who combined to play about 42 minutes per game. Two were seniors who graduated. The best of them was 7 footer Gettys, who transferred, and was rumored to have been forced off the team due to off court issues. In his third season, Keatts only got 11 mpg from players 6’8″ or taller; 6 of the top 7 players in mpg were guards. This helps to explain why block percentage dropped so much, and why opponent 2 point FGP went up. Big reduction in rim protection.

I totally understand that this is ultimately on the coach, who is responsible for building the roster. However, what it seems he did is to adjust to small lineup and maximize the roster he had. IMO he deserves credit for that. It also makes it seem that he will have more options and more room for defensive improvement with better athletes at State.

Also, I noticed an interesting defensive split: UNCW allowed 31.7 ppg in the first half of its games last season, which was #73 in the NCAA. They allowed 42.3 ppg in the second half of its games last season, which was #328 in the NCAA. Their best 3 guards averaged at least 33.5 mpg, and their best F averaged 25.9. It seems likely that they did not really have the depth to continue the pressure defense in the second half of many games, whether that means they pulled out of it more or were just less effective. He should have rosters at State with more depth. That would suggest the possibility of improvement in defensive metrics.

Sobering reality of our place in the pecking order.

Huh? Did anyone in their right mind think we were equivalent to or higher than Indiana in the pecking order? IU is a top 10 all time MBB program. Some would say top 5.

I did with respect to Archie Miller. Did you forget he played here? I don’t see anything far fetched about it. I bet if we were able to offer as much as Indiana (and his bro wasn’t being a dick) he’d be our new coach.

There is a lot that goes into quantifying the quality of a particular MBB HC opportunity: salary, other income opportunities (shoe deals, media deals), contract details (number of years, buyout, etc.), budget for assistants, budget for recruiting, facilities, recruiting appeal, fans, tradition, conference/competition, current roster, place to live, etc.

All of that collectively establishes a pecking order. State is not able to compete with IU on many of the items I listed. Case closed.

The “40 minutes of He77? style of play has been shown to top out around a 5-7 seed.

    1. Pitino has won 2 championships and been to 7 Final Fours, and K2’s system has roots/overlap with Pitino’s system.

    2. How many teams have really played “40 minutes of hell” style? Arkansas under Nolan Richardson. VCU under Shaka (and other coaches?). How many others? Bottom line, it’s a small sample size, and those programs did not have resources/situation comparable to State.

This doesn’t prove K2 will succeed, but I certainly do not believe there is any proof that he cannot succeed with his system.

I assume Yow investigated Archie’s interest and found that he wasn’t ready to accept the job. With that assumption, I like this hire for all the reasons others like chop and rye have posted.

Some of the reaction in this forum is ridiculous. Not much different than “the monkey board.”
