Down to a 2 point lead… UNC-G on 11-1 run. WTF is our coaching staff doing?

As much as I like Freeman, I’m not sure Gott should keep him in the game at this point given his free throw shooting.

6 point lead with 6:30 remaining. This is a real danger zone.

I like this team and look forward to watching it develop. But I don’t see this team making the NCAA tournament.

The defense, energy, and attitude is better than last season. But there just simply aren’t enough offensive threats, especially to run good zone offense.

Maybe the coaching staff can coach them up in season to improve the offense, particularly the zone offense, but I am skeptical. We don’t have enough outside shooting. The team’s 3-point field goal percentage is currently 30.48%, which is 14th in the ACC and well below our team’s average in any season within the past decade. Aside from Turner, the rest of the rotation players collectively shoot just 25.6% on three pointers. Hopefully, Lacey and the Martins will help in this area next season, but it’s hard to see a major improvement this year.

I hope I’m wrong, but it seems like a glaring weakness that will be hard to overcome against quality ACC opponents.

“Tyler played pretty solid. His numbers were 3 Fouls; 6 points; 7 assists; 3 rebounds and only 2 Turnover.”

I watched this game, and I’m surprised his line doesn’t look worse. One thing not mentioned here is that he was 1/5 from the floor and 3/5 from the free throw line. In addition to that, none of these numbers reflect his defense, and my impression from watching the game was that his man took advantage of him a few times.

For the season, Tyler’s Roland Rating is pretty bad. It has been negative for every game but one (Campbell). That shows that the team is playing better when he isn’t on the court.

I’m hopeful he will break out of his shooting slump while continuing to generate assists while minimizing turnovers. That still leaves the issue of how well he can guard opposing guards, but that will always be an issue given that almost everyone he faces will always be taller and quicker.

What does everyone think about Tyler’s play this season and his prospects going forward?

Per Verbal Commits, we still have open offers to these players:

JC PG Jeff Newberry (2 stars)
SG James Blackmon Jr. (4.3 stars)
    SF Stanley Johnson (5 stars)
    PF Gary Clark (3.7 stars)
    PF Ben Bentil (4 stars)
    PF Ray Kasongo (2.5 stars)

For those saying we’ve stopped recruiting Clark, and the class is likely complete, does that imply we have stopped recruiting others on this list, like Newberry and Kasongo?

    Per VC:

    – Johnson has 20 outstanding offers, including most of the elite programs.
    – Blackmon has 19 outstanding offers, including most of the elite programs.
    – Bentil has 15 outstanding offers, mostly from programs in the Northeast. State is arguably one of the top few offers.

Is it simply assumed that Blackmon, Johnson, and Bentil are headed elsewhere? I assume we’d take them if they were interested, but it looks unlikely that any of them will choose State.

I must say, Gottfried can certainly recruit. His classes so far (first number = overall rank, second number = position rank):

2011 – TF PG Alex Johnson (?,?), SG Jaqawn Raymond (NR, 82), PF Tyler Harris (139,22), PF Thomas DeThaey (NR,NR)

2012 – PG Tyler Lewis (49,4), SG Rodney Purvis (17,6), SF T.J. Warren (23,6), TF SG Ralston Turner (119,25)

2013 – PG Cat Barber (22, 5), C Beejay Anya (59,5), C Kyle Washington (99,13), TF SG Trevor Lacey (38,11), PF Lennard Freeman (NR,NR), JC SG Desmond Lee (NR,NR)

    2014 – SF Caleb Martin (45,13), SF Cody Martin (107,27), PF Abdul-Malik Abu (47,10)

Note: all positions and rankings from Verbal Commits.

Given Gottfried took over in April, 2011, it’s no surprise that class was weak and all three players other than senior transfer Alex Johnson later transferred out of the program. But, as of right now, in the 3 classes Gottfried fully recruited since taking over, he has signed 10 players who were in the top 25 at their position, including 6 players who were top 10 at their position. With several offers still outstanding for the class of 2014.

He’s not recruiting on par with UNC or Duke, but his recruiting is a lot better and more consistent than State has had since Valvano.

I’d love to see someone with access to better data than me post a detailed comparison of Gott’s recruiting at State vs. past N.C. State coaches and Gott’s recruiting at State vs. the national field (i.e., where does he rank?).

“if you call 13 carries for 26 yards a “rushing game on full display” then ouch.”

Perhaps you aren’t aware that in college, sacks are characterized as QB rushing attempts, and yardage lost on sacks are characterized as QB ruahing yards. Here are Wilson’s rushing attempts from that Clemson game:

    1. rushed for 9 yards and 1st down
    2. rushed for 3 yards and 1st down
    3. sacked for loss of 9 yards
    4. rushed for 2 yards
    5. sacked for loss of 5 yards
    6. rushed for 4 yards
    7. rushed for 4 yards, late hit personal foul on Clemson resulted in 1st down
    8. rushed for 2 yards
    9. rushed for 2 yards, facemask personal foul on Clemson resulted in 1st down
    10. rushed for 3 yards
    11. rushed for 1 yard
    12. rushed for 6 yards and 1st down
    13. rushed for 4 yards

He actually rushed 11 times for 40 yards and 5 1st downs (2 by penalty). That is pretty good for a QB on the road at Clemson in his first full start.

    1. Thanks for the interesting post.

    2. This is such a small sample size, it isn’t particularly meaningful, especially considering some of the variables (e.g., Glennon being a redshirt junior who has been through spring practice twice as the #1 QB).

    3. I think it is (should be) obvious to all that Glennon is not going to be comparable to/as good as Rivers. If he was, he would have beaten out Wilson before now. Rivers is one of the best QBs in ACC history, so that bar is very high, and there is no shame for Glennon in not being that good.

    4. I think it is (should be) obvious to all that Glennon is not going to be comparable to/as good as Wilson. They are completely different types of QBs. And Wilson is one of the best QBs in ACC history, so that bar is very high. Unfortunately for Glennon, due to circumstances, this comparison will be relevant for the rest of Glennon’s career.

    5. So in terms of the QBs named in this post, IMO we are left with the question of whether or not he will be better than Davis, Stone, and Evans. I feel pretty certain he will. It might be more interesting to include a larger sample set of NCAA QBs or Wolfpack QBs.
