^There is zero chance they will trade him, for a few reasons:

    1. They just signed him to a four year extension about six months ago. To trade or release him this offseason, the Chargers would take a cap hit of $18M.

    2. They would have no one to play QB and would be stuck gambling on a draft pick and/or a journeyman. This year’s draft is weak at QB. McCoy and Telesco are on the hot seat, they need to win games.

    3. Rivers is one of the greatest Chargers of all-time, right up there with Fouts, Tomlinson, Seau, Gates, and Alworth. He is the face of the franchise. The organization justifiably wants him to retire as a Charger, and that’s what will happen.

Furthermore, since it seemed to be part of your rationale, I don’t think the Chargers are going to move to LA. I live in San Diego and have followed this saga pretty closely. It is in Spanos’s interest to work out a deal to stay in San Diego rather than be Kroenke’s tenant in LA, and I think that is what will happen.

That would be the dumbest move possible. I am not a Telesco fan, but I think he is smarter than that. No chance IMO.

He has, over the past two seasons, started stressing defense much more.

I haven’t noticed significant (or really any) improvement yet….I’ll have to pay more attention.

This year State ranks (our rebounding and blocked shots are ranked high)
    #294 in opponents effective FG%
    #248 in opponents three%
    #288 in opponents two %
    #276 in opponents FG%
    #272 in opp shooting efficiency

    Info pulled from https://www.teamrankings.com/ncaa-basketball/team/nc-state-wolfpack/stats

Rick, you quoted the N.C. State offense ranks, not defense. Here are the defense ranks:

    #100 in opponents effective FG%
    #293 in opponents three%
    #32 in opponents two %
    #75 in opponents FG%
    #45 in opp shooting efficiency

Aside from those numbers, we are good in blocks, but very poor at creating turnovers, and we also aren’t great on the defensive boards.

If we could defend the three point line and get better on the defensive boards, we would be a good defensive team. Of course, the former is a tall order for team with only one real guard playing, so I’m not holding my breath.

It’s obvious they just wanted out of the program.

See, this is a bashing perspective. You are the one making claims to fit your narrative.

Warren obviously made the right choice. Leslie probably felt like he had to go based on how the NBA drafts, i.e., young players can have issues in their game but get drafted on potential, older players not so much. Or maybe he just overrated his game and thus his NBA chances. Brown may have been the same as Leslie.

Or maybe Leslie and Brown were like Lacey, ready to get paid to play.

In any case, there is no evidence that any one of them had any problem with Gott and “just wanted out.” When you say it that way, the implication is that they would have stayed if “the program” was different in some way but were pushed into leaving because it wasn’t.

People like Rick want to bash Gott about player retention,

I said it was a weakness of his. I notice you didn’t mention the strengths I listed cuz it doesn’t fit your narrative. Of course you go on to mention the things you think he does wrong but I guess when you do it it’s not “bashing”.

I don’t have a “narrative.” I have an opinion/perspective on the player retention issue that was under discussion in the thread. I don’t think all criticism is bashing. It turns into bashing when it is rehashed constantly without applying appropriate context. I provided context in my post that shows it isn’t as bad as you and some others have made it out to be. The overall roster management has been a weakness, but IMO not because of player retention, as I explained. You are free to disagree.

He has lost an average of … 3/4 to leaving early with no hope of the NBA.

This is demonstrably false. Warren and Brown are both currently playing for the Suns.

Lacey played on the Cavaliers summer league team and is now playing in Italy; he could still play in the NBA in the future. I believe it was understood when he declared that he was not expected to get drafted and was ready to play in Europe. I wouldn’t characterize him as having “no hope” of playing the NBA.

Leslie was signed to a partially guaranteed contract by the Knicks after the 2013 draft. They later waived him, but it clearly wasn’t true that he had “no hope” of playing in the NBA. This past summer, he played for the Kings summer league team. He could still play in the NBA in the future, though IMO he is probably a longer shot than Lacey due to his tweener size and the limitations in his game as relates to the NBA. For now, he is playing in the Israeli league.

BTW are you really including walk ons to make a point? LOL

Yes, they are on the team. You know who they are and can discount them if you like.

Has a Gott recruit ever stayed all 4 years and graduated? I honestly cannot remember and too hungover to look it up.

This is Gott’s 5th season, so this could only have happened with his first class: TDT, Harris, Raymond, Battle. Battle is the only one who stayed all 4 years and completed his eligibility. But this class isn’t really a great example, since Gott didn’t have even a full year to recruit this class, and I think Lowe signed Raymond and Harris.

However, his second class (and the first one that was fully his IMO) was Lewis, Purvis, Warren, and Chase Cannon, and it looks the same with respect to this question — only Cannon will stay 4 years and complete his eligibility.

His third class was Anya, Barber, Freeman, Washington, Chris Brickhouse, and Patrick Wallace. Washington transferred and everyone expects Barber to go pro after this year. Not sure if Wallace is still on the roster, but the other 3 (Anya, Freeman, and Brickhouse) are on pace to complete 4 years of eligibility next season.

Also, here is the full list of players who have completed their eligibility under Gott:

    Alex Johnson
    CJ Williams
    Kendall Smith
    Richard Howell
    Scott Wood
    Jay Lewis
    Jordan Vandenburg
    Ralston Turner
    Desmond Lee
    Staats Battle
    Chase Cannon (this year)

IMO the player retention problem is a bit overblown. First, examine the departures:

    – Addition by subtraction: Harrow, TDT, Harris, Purvis. Also notable, Harrow didn’t give Gott a chance, so he can’t be Gott’s fault.
    – Raymond never would have played; Gott never would have signed him. Zero impact.
    – The reason given for Painter’s departure was family illness, which is not on Gott.
    – Leslie, Warren, Brown, and Lacey left to go pro early. The only way to prevent this is not to recruit players good enough to go pro, i.e., not to recruit top talent. That is nonsensical.
    – IMO both Lewis and Washington would have been clear backups if they stayed, likely playing 15 minutes or fewer per game, aside from injury/foul trouble situations.

People like Rick want to bash Gott about player retention, but IMO it doesn’t hold up when you actually break it down. IMO you can throw out Harrow, TDT, Harris, and Raymond as not mattering, the guys who left early to go pro as being an acceptable consequence of signing top talent, and Painter’s family situation. Meanwhile, Gott brought in a lot talent via transfer: Johnson, Lee, Lacey, Turner, Henderson, Dorn. Given the high nationwide transfer rate, overall it seems to me that Gott has actually done a pretty good job in this area.

I think the real issue is what others have stated, that Gott should be signing more recruits and using all of his scholarships. IMO he should continue going after the elite talent, and he seems to be pretty good at that, especially considering he is representing N.C. State and competing pretty well for recruits with the blue blood programs. But he should not be limiting his recruiting to only the elite talent as he seems inclined to do. He needs to sign some lesser ranked players to fill out his rosters.

It also wouldn’t hurt if he had his teams play at a faster pace which enabled him to use a larger rotation and might enable him to keep more players happy with playing time, but IMO that is a weak criticism. The bottom line is he has a good track record on the court, which gives some validation to his system and rotations.

I expect DSJ to be worse defensively than Cat and to have more turnovers. However, I expect he will be better offensively, because he will likely be more willing to attack the defense and better at finishing at the rim. He will likely shoot better from the field, though perhaps not from the free throw line.

If all of this is true, take that and add to Dorn and Henderson, and the team should be quite a bit better next season, barring multiple early departures.

not to defend Herbert but he was finishing high in the ACC (2nd 3rd) regardless of getting his ass handed to him by the blues. I think I would take finishing high in the ACC now vs the occasional win.

Herb finished second once, and third once. In ten years. His average finish was 5.3. Gott’s is about the same, and Duke and Carolina are arguably better now than they were during the Herb years.

Also who gives a crap about second and third place (at best) regular season conference finishes?

I care about winning an NCAA championship, winning an ACC championship and beating Carolina and Duke. In that order.

Yes, Herb finished second once and tied for third once… both times in a 9 team ACC, once with Doherty coaching UNC and the other time with Roy cleaning up Doherty’s mess. Those finishes are not particularly impressive in retrospect.

Gott is coaching in a different and more difficult ACC than Herb was in those two seasons.

Let’s dispense with “carry” and just talk about freshman PGs who played at a high level (e.g., all conference/All American level). Here are some, in no particular order:

    Kenny Anderson
    Stephon Marbury
    Kyrie Irving*
    Austin Rivers
    Tyus Jones
    Bobby Hurley
    Steve Blake
    Kendall Marshall
    Chris Paul
    Allen Iverson
    Marcus Smart
    D’Angelo Russell
    Trey Burke
    Jalen Rose
    Mike Bibby
    Baron Davis
    Jason Kidd
    Tyus Edney
    Isaiah Thomas
    Mike Conley
    Derrick Rose
    Tyreke Evans
    Corey Joseph
    John Wall
    Brandon Knight
Sure, it’s rare, but it happens. I’m sure this is not an exhaustive list.

Living now in Georgia, the biggest beef with Richt was “lack of a sense of urgency”. This is what bugs me most about Gott. He just seems a little apathetic on the outcome – he always talks about how his guys need to learn to play harder as we consistently have these poor early season losses, but I don’t see the fire to win coming from the coach.

I agree with this. I like Gott in general, but this seems like valid criticism.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see some shake up in assistants though.

I have been hoping for this for the past couple of seasons. This is the best way to inject positive change, like new perspective on recruiting philosophy (e.g., let’s use all of the scholarships) and different coaching emphasis (e.g., more focus/teaching on defense and rebounding).

I didn’t think that hit was worth any flag. QB had already pump faked once. And he only pushed him. Come on man.

He took two steps before contacting the QB. You are allowed one. You might argue the rule should be changed, but it very clearly was a penalty. Thankfully, he got bailed out.

What a disaster. Hope JB can shake it off and make better decisions the rest of the game.

In fairness to JB…that wasn’t exactly his missed blocked.

As a 5th year QB playing in a pouring rainstorm in a big game against a quality opponent, he has to know better than to throw that ball. It’s as simple as that.

Yes, the missed block was bad, and that wasn’t JB’s fault, but you know some blocks will be missed and must react better.
