Just dropping by to say there is nothing more entertaining than reading a (well deserved) pessimistic thread on the state of State basketball AFTER an improbable win.

Of course, I was certain I was going to single-handedly reverse history by watching the re-broadcast this morning and having doubts several times even knowing the outcome.

Any chance it’s not a Valvano curse, but a Coach K curse instead? Maybe things turn around for us once that man and his unnatural hair finally retire for good.

You know, that is a wise observation. I’m gonna hang onto that, because frankly, it gives me more hope that we can get back and stay on the national stage one day. Sigh.

Is this the run Gott makes to save his job and hold us in limbo?
    Always glad to beat Duke.
Was our defense better or did they just miss open threes?
I think this clinches that K will strike this season from his record.

They missed some shots but I felt we were more active and therefore better. They still got open a bunch. Rebounding stood out, have not seen the stats. Honestly all things considered the difference was Kapita and Smith just being clutch a handful of times.

Kapita should have been playing more

He’s got multiple players who would thrive in a scramble type up and down game. We could get high motor guys like Kapita some minutes and not be saddled with a guy who can’t contribute but 2 times down the court. Why he refuses to press until 45 seconds are left is baffling. He is wasting one of our greatest players by being too stubborn to create a system in which this team can thrive. What an idiot.

    Grey,

That cuts both ways though. Not really much of an accomplishment if it’s easier to get the women’s and Olympic type sports good. The real meat and potatoes would be to get our revenue sports in the top 25. It takes timing, lots of luck, some mastery of the AD craft, and probably lots of hard work.

Overall, I’d give her an incomplete I guess. If I was forced to give her a letter grade, right now C+ sounds about right.

Of course it is an accomplishment. We’ve moved from 84th to 12th. I don’t care what league you are playing in, that’s an accomplishment.

Incomplete is fair especially in football. Grading them separately I’d say she failed in MBB. Time to sit down with her boss and plan a strategy to replace MG.

Hang tight with football. There is way more than meets the eye there. The W/L record for 2016 is an anomaly. Our football program in every way, except the one most of us can see (W/L), is ahead of the curve. We are building a foundation for the near and distant future. DD is responsible for the IPF, locker room upgrade, additions to support staff (that we can’t see), our coaching staff is a fine combination of people and coaches, and our athletes are high character young men with great work ethics.

Dave is accused of bonehead decisions by people who are clueless about what they are talking about. All the modern day HC does on his own is cheerlead and pass out ‘attaboys.’ All the rest are decisions made with various degrees of input from assistants in the booth. The bottom line is on the HC but he doesn’t watch live action and film for tells that indicate whether or not a punt/kick or fake is going to work. Most decisions are pianolas based on time and distance.

I don’t know how to say this accurately but Dave Doeren has enrolled administration, Coaches, Support Staff, players, etc., in his vision and his stand for NC State football. State football is in much better shape today than its ever been. No, the W/L doesn’t reflect that yet. It will.

Soon we will have video support for recruiting that will expertly show case and create enthusiasm for our program. The head of that department will be on the recruiting staff. Even without this we are attracting attention and interest from a better talent level recruit. It is only going to get better.

Now step back and watch the loyal State Fans attack in a feeding frenzy this positive post. It’s like Bob Dylan wrote in one of his earlier songs, “Some people ain’t got much food on the table but they got a lot of forks and knives and they gotta cut something.”

I can agree with you. I do think it is an accomplishment and I’m proud as punch to have our non-revenue sports successful. I hate to oscillate with the wind on Doren but I am a fan and have almost no knowledge of football. I was ready to have him gone after EZU and BC. He has won me back with the late season surge. Hopefully we can get a double digit in wins or at least 9 wins next year.

Everyone is dismayed by not only our record in basketball but how we have looked. Historic beat downs can only be weathered in good or fair seasons. What we have here is really close to a nuclear meltdown. I don’t envy his spot right now and I don’t believe he can pull it out. But he does have a chance and he needs to get this team to the tournament. If he doesn’t he probably needs to go, and DY needs to do it. This is pretty much what most State fans thinks right about now.

I think DY is catching heck because of the perception she won’t get rid of Gott if the need arises. If she gets rid of Gott and we get who we want as a coach, I’d move her up to a B+ almost instantly. IF we have a dumpster fire and Gott stays steering us into the cellar for the foreseeable future in basketball, she would get a wholehearted F—.

There is more competition in the revenue sports. not as easy to succeed. No mystery.

Come on StateRed44. Nobody is interested in the reasons football and basketball are not doing as well as we want them to.

Glad you stepped up with this. I was going to say the same thing but I’m really shy and couldn’t take the DY haters blasting me for having the audacity to tell the truth about men’s revenue sports. Good on you.

He needs to bust out in a defensive press. New legs every 4 mins. What have we got to lose? At this rate even an NIT bid looks lost.

The pace is being dictated to us. Lets speed them up. It will help our rebounding, defense, help our fast break, help our aggression. If he really had a sack he’d do it.

he would probably say, “we haven’t practiced the press”. well why the heck not you dumb sonofagun?

At this point he needs to press and use our depth. The starters are getting hammered. I believe we have more talent than most teams 8-11. lets use it.

Is he scared to coach Smith, or is he wanting Smith to jack up crap whenever he feels like it? Probably somewhere in the middle. I want so badly to be a huge Smith fan.

I agree about Johnson. I think people think he’s great because he hustles. His shot does suck now though.

I’m not sure playing Markell over Dorn is going to win us games, if both are playing at their peak. I guess he’s trying to juggle lineups. Dorn’s case seems emblematic of how a guy comes in looking good and now looks lost. Its gotta be coaching. Yurtseven is lost, Kapita is lost. Even Smith is not playing correctly. Abu? He should never leave a 5 ft radius of the basket. Go on down the line. Only BJ does what he is supposed to consistently and he can’t run down the court 2x in a row.

2 questions. What the hell is wrong with Dorn? Why doesn’t Gott give Yurt the stupid ball at the high post instead of the low post? Euro big don’t want to back in with contact.

OK. Don’t care how close this game is, but we gotta have a win. And I want to see some hustle and guts. If they are gonna talk Detroit Pistons and come out like scared rabbits, I hope they heard from everybody including their mommas. They don’t even need to feign being mad or tough or whatever. Just take care of business please, stay focused on winning, not trying to look good. As we used to say, “tighten up”.

I want Clemson to win. Big Time. Screw it. The way they recruit now, it only helps us if they win and won’t help us if they lose. Go ACC! Tired of hearing all the SEC talk the last 15 years also.

I’d toss Frank Martin in there as a fallback should we need, just saying. You want to see defense? He’s your man.

    Rye,

Look, I wouldn’t have a problem firing Gott should we miss the tourney (especially with more days like Sunday). But, #1 it ain’t happened yet, #2 I didn’t hate him from the start which would cloud my judgement, #3 you gotta know your pecking order and be realistic about the environment – proceed with caution.

With that said, I’d have much rather had Dino Gaudio than Lutz as 1st asst. Never have been impressed with Lutz, I’m sure he’s a fine man and did well, but NC State is a different world than UNCC.

The absolute best course of action right now would be to get this team to buy in somehow and win right now. There is no doubt he knows the problem with this team, lets see if he can get it done to most’s satisfaction.
