I came away from this game kinda disappointed. Stagnant offense. Horrid FT shooting. 1-on-1 dribbles getting into the lane and getting easy points. A win is a win, but I’m not happy with it.
spintkParticipantIs Dez in the dog house or something. When Turner can’t make 3s, he doesn’t really help this team. At least Dez can play D and get to the rim for a foul. As far as the zone goes, teams will use it against us. Need more than just one 3 point shooter running along the baseline and going 0-5.
spintkParticipantOur free throw shooting is extremely disheartening. If we are going to make the dance in a STACKED ACC, we need to make those freebies. Lay-ups (including the fumbles by the bigs when the guards cut) are much the same way–need to start making the bunnies. Other than those to glaring weaknesses, we have played well. A LOT of offense created by the defensive intensity. Not too happy about the TOs, but hopefully we tighten that up in the second half.
spintkParticipant^ a little early to have those “fears,” don’t ya think? EVERY team has a rough start; it’s just how things go at the beginning of the year. and with us, it’s even more pronounced given the inexperience. having dez [defense], turner [court stretcher], and lacey [clutch offense and a level head] should prove to be very valuable in tight, end-of-game situations.
spintkParticipantshould be entertaining to watch. a lot of this nothing schools treat the big conference games like their homecoming. it will be nice to see what our talent does to jsu’s best shot. as far as rotations, i think we’ll see a lot of bodies early to give everyone a healthy dose of experience. this is the first time gottfried has been this deep, so let’s see what he does with it. i’m expecting dramatically improved defense now that people are fighting for minutes.
spintkParticipantShould I change my sig pic now?
spintkParticipant8 players scored for us in the first half? Need to continue to rebound and not turn the ball over [including bad shots that lead to fast breaks for Xavier]. Decent game so far. Would have loved to extend the lead instead of them going on a 6 point run. Hopefully that tightens up the second half.
spintkParticipantNow that post is out of me, we definitely came in and showed the Number 1 team that we are for real. TJW gets a little more credit [hopefully]. And we learned that our crappy games are NOT for lack of talent. I don’t know if that last part is a good thing or bad thing, but we definitely have the horses to run, and that’s with a gimpy horse in Vandenberg.
Did we just match up well? Did we get lucky or catch Syracuse on an off night? Time will tell and we will have those answers based on the way we play our next games. But a loss is a loss, and right now we have zero marque wins, and have losses to WF, Duke, UNX, and SU.
Hope the team comes out MAD for the rest of the season.
Oh, and how ’bout KWash! This kid was my favorite of the freshmen class to begin with. He is really starting to show why he has earned his starting spot. Tyler has also proven that he needs to be running point. I think with the class schedule and D1 training, Cat is struggling a little at this point.
<sigh>go pack</sigh>
spintkParticipantJust watched the game and read through the posts. Here we go again with the refs. Did it suck to lose like that? Yes. Did the refs do it to us? No.
IIRC, we missed 7 free throws. We lost by 1 point. We turned the ball over twice under 30 second to play, one when all we needed to do was hold on to the ball and get fouled again.
Give Gottfried all the credit you want, too, but at the end of the day, he didn’t get the job done. On both turnovers, TJW was nowhere near the ball. Managing your player personnel is important, and probably THE most important at the end of the game.
This was a heartbreaking loss. I guess we’ve mastered that. But the same ol’, “Protect the Blues” chatter gets old. We correct [1] the free throws and [2] the turnovers, and we win that game. Period. Has nothing to do with protecting No. 1.
spintkParticipantAaaannnnddd that does it for me. There is no way this is the players just being piss poor. We get it to 13 and pull that crap? There is something deeper that is the problem.
spintkParticipantMaybe we could just move to the SoCon? I would much rather play down to the UNCGs of the world and squeak out wins than lose like this.
We came out with no emotion and were unappologetic about it. Meanwhile, Carolina’s ball pressure is giving our elementary school offense all it can handle.
As for the refs, they have been fair in my book. Truth is, we can’t play defense. Haven’t been able to in 3 years. And we do foul. A lot.
Looks like I’m headed to the gym early if this keeps up.

Please edit all the horrible things I am saying. It is not horrid but the constant ‘gott sucks’ posts from a noon get old quick. You can do it all you want but you will end up being ignored.
I am obviously doing it in jest at this point. No worse than complaining about the refs at this point. We suck. Why not make it as amusing as we can?
spintkParticipantPlease edit all the horrible things I am saying.
spintkParticipantGottfried excuse: we didn’t have warren.
spintkParticipantWow. We are making Duke look like an All Star team. We are playing and coaching right into their competitive advantages.
The cognitive bias phenomenon of “anchoring” has caused me to compare Gott to Lowe, which makes him look like a helluva coach. Now that I’m watching a very well coached team in Duke play a Gott team, I am enjoying the benefit of relativity. The contrast is stark and frightening.
1- why are our guards not coached to dribble into contact? If you haven’t painfully noticed…we have the quickest PG in the ACC yet he doesn’t draw many fouls when defended tightly away from the basket nor on drives. Even Vandy hasn’t learned in 5 years to maintain position when being hounded defensively on the high post. Sure they called a foul but the possession before he was falling away from the defender instead of standing your ground and drawing a foul…coaching.
2- we aren’t a good up-tempo team this year. Duke lacks a true post presence. Why are we having a track meet with them and playing into their strength? In fact one of our many weaknesses is ball control and turnovers. We should minimize possessions to have any chance.
Duke thrives off tempo, aggressive defense and just general chaos.
Gameplan: disrupt their essence by making the game half-court. Dribble and drive into their players ever possession. (our players don’t have that skill b/c they haven’t ever been coached to do so) Be physical inside and foul them hard when necessary.
Basketball coaching isn’t hard. Could you imagine if NCAA coach’s average IQ was 130 instead of idk…115.
Very well said. Touché.

I have to do my part to even on the ref hate.In all seriousness, the game is much closer than I figured it would be.
And btw, the only thing I said that was remotely offensive was, “Jesus Christ.” For obvious reasons, I’ll refrain from that. It doesn’t mean my comments about the coach are any more over the top than the incessant ref whining.
Focus on the game. There is no reason to criticize there other postErs. If you want to criticize the coach have st it but don’t get pissy when people fire back
I have not criticized anyone here.
spintkParticipantI have to do my part to even on the ref hate. 😉

spintkParticipanthey — new guy… that’s polar bear is kinda cute but that’s enough of him for a while…
You were taking shots at Barber the previous game and you don’t like what I say? Ha!
spintkParticipantJesus Christ, guys. Find something other than the refs to complain about.
spintkParticipantWhy does Mark insist on running the high post offense with this group?
spintkParticipantWhat does Gottfried do in practice? Write quotes on the white board?
spintkParticipantThe Mark Gottfried offense: one person moves.
spintkParticipantI wish Gottfried could teach basketball. How many games in are we and we’re still not attacking the rim but we’re still hand checking.
spintkParticipantHopefully Tyler is up for it physically. They are trying to punch us in the mouth on every possession. Can we keep up the intensity?
spintkParticipantGottfried’s post-game comments are pathetic. Looks like this is who we have for however many years. The man needs to grow a pair, take the blame, call out the refs, get mad . . . something . . . ANYTHING! Sitting up there saying, “Turner had some good looks. Some good shots you want him to take.,” doesn’t help. Give it a rest! You are lying to our faces now.
It is going to take a lot for Gottfried to win me back over. A whole hell of a lot. To start, he can put the kibosh on all the excuses. Everytime he flaps his lips an excuse spills out. Just stop already. If he does that, it’s at least a step in the right direction. I would imagine that Yow will let his contract go to the last year if need be. Not good when there are already murmurs around the basketball program that Gottfried might not have what it takes.
