This game is really where Gott’s critics have loads of ammo. It’s atrocious how bad this team is in the half-court. Defense is playing ok but if you keep turning the ball over, we’re the worst we’ve ever been at scoring since HWSNBN.

Got to limit turnovers. Abu can’t be slow with the ball when the double-team comes.

Thanks CoyoteJoe. I have yet to witness the GWiz in person myself. I’m looking forward to a trip to the ACC Tournament this year in Charlottesville, but since my family and I are setting roots down in GA now, I might have to just enjoy through the computer screen. But we’ll see. Good luck to your son for the rest of this season. What weight class is he wrestling?

No, I certainly don’t believe that Saban would have us in the playoffs, AliasTroll. But Alabama went through Perkins, Stallings, Dubose, Franchione, Price and Shula before Saban took the job, and though Stallings won a National Title in ’92, there is no comparison to Alabama now and Alabama then. Most of those other coaches had stellar recruits as well. Texas went through David McWilliams and John Mackovic before they found Mack Brown. Saban had stellar recruits at LSU, but his program has been roughly the same as Miles. Saban also represents the perfect combination of great coaching plus great talent. Meyer will probably have Ohio State in the same spot as he had Florida soon, but those are exceptions. Carroll at USC’s only comparison is John McKay. There has to be a confluence of coach and talent. Sometimes one begets the other. But there is no formula for that type of success, and recruiting rankings only show what you want to see in them: i.e. winning + low rankings = outstanding coach winning with less talent than everyone else. TCU is an excellent example of my point because their highest recruiting ranking over the last six years is 26th. Baylor’s highest ranking over the same period is #31. Both of those teams have had vastly greater success than us during that same time frame. Is it the players or is it the coaches?

The truth of the matter is that there is always a balance between bringing in good players and coaching them to be great. Kids who are stand-out high school players will have their rankings skewed by being wanted by top programs. By that rationale, Alabama will always have a great recruiting class regardless of the ability of the players to perform. Most fans want to believe that there is a quick fix. “If we just have a top-10 recruiting class, we would win despite not having good coaching.” And this is a fallacy that many fans of mid-tier programs have. FSU has very good players and a solid coaching staff this year, just like last year and the year before. What is the difference between the three seasons? Jameis Winston was the difference for two of those, but even he wasn’t good enough last year to beat a team that got pounded in the championship game. Our program should be improved after three years and the improvement is not discernible at this point. Some coaches have been let go or have moved on, and I (as well as others) hope that new coaches will show marked improvement in their respective areas. This game of building a college sports program isn’t like Algebra with constants and one variable. We all want success but claims that vast ‘improvement’ in one area fixes the problem is short-sighted.

Would you rather I give you Houston’s recruiting classes over the last four seasons? Or TCU? And please tell me the ‘whole story’ because my ‘cherry-picking’ is omitting so much of the truth.

AliasTroll, according to Rivals.com, NC State had the #7 recruiting class in the country in 2003. Would you like to know our record for the following four seasons? 8-5 (2003), 5-6 (2004), 7-5 (2005), 3-9 (2006). From 2002 to 2015 Georgia’s LOWEST recruiting class was ranked 15th in the country, they won 2 conference titles (2002, 2005). The University of Miami had two recruiting classes ranked outside the top-20 (six were ranked in the top-10) during the same 14-year period, they won more than nine games twice during that period. I understand that having good players is essential, but recruiting service approval isn’t gospel. Would you like me to go chapter and verse on highly-ranked NC State players who didn’t live up to their rankings?

Thanks, MrP. I like doing this. Sorry to the Pakfanistan and CD for not seeing their comments earlier. I was in fact, in the zone. As for the sport of the gods, that must be curling. Because only someone with that much time on their hands will watch that for two hours. Thanks again, fellows. Next up for Pack Wrestling is the Pittsburgh Duals, where the Pack will take on Hofstra, Harvard, Edinboro and American in dual team action. And as my hero Gordon Soley used to say, “We’ll be back as soon as order is restored!”

Boykin gives up a takedown. Hartmann leads 5-0 with riding time in hand. Boykin has a stalling warning. I really like this kid, but have seen too many of these matches where giving up a takedown in period 1 proves the death knell for his chances. Hpoefully Coach Pop can get some really good improvement out of Boykin. Up comes Gwiz with State leading 28-9.

Boykin gets ridden out for the entire 2nd period. 2-0 lead for Hartmann plus riding time. Boykin lets Hartmann up so Hartmann up 3-0 now.

Boykin has been terrible on bottom this year, so he needs desperately to get out of the down position.

Hartmann and Boykin dance and parry and Hartmann gets a takedown at the buzzer, but it was debatable. No video review for tonight’s match, which is stupid because cameras are streaming the match. Hartmann begins the 2nd period on top leading 2-0.
