ParticipantGustafson did win the ACC title two years ago, and good for him; however, a ‘Round-of-12’ guy doesn’t finish 1-2 at the NCAAs (which Gustafson did in 2013-2014). Norstrem was the 133 representative for Va Tech at the NCAA’s last season. Gustafson’s record is 6-4 on the year, and all his losses are to ranked opponents, and his has no wins against ranked opponents. Two of his losses are by major decision. Again, apologies for my ‘lack of precise info.’

ParticipantI think the free throw disparity in the 2nd half was 23-10 favoring Duke. I was very happy to see Kirk with some minutes.

ParticipantTalk about a superb team effort! Despite losing at 184, 197, 133, 149, and 174, not one of those losses was a bonus point loss!! Gwiz and Gantt earned bonus point victories!! On to face Va Tech and Missouri to close out the season!!

ParticipantForgot to add a huge upset as Sean Fausz beats #9 Lambert 5-4!!

ParticipantNC State Wrestling is victorious over Nebraska in Lincoln tonight!! The match was tied at 12, when the 157-pounders took to the mat and Tommy Gantt earned a major decision 11-3, followed by Max Rohskopf’s 4-1 decision to seal the victory for the Pack. Hell of a job tonight, despite close losses by Boykin and Renda.

ParticipantGreat stuff CoyoteJoe. I have been in the moving process for the last while and couldn’t live blog. Thanks for helping out!!

ParticipantJust to give some updates, the dual team season has begun, and Va Tech opened their conference season with a win over UNX 27-13. State will be wrestling in Dorton this afternoon against UVa. Check out the preview I have above.

Participant0-4. Getting to .500 in conference play would be perhaps Gott’s greatest coaching job possible. I feel badly for our guys because the effort is definitely there, but we can’t execute when we need to, always seem to lose the bounce, can’t shoot at all. The criticisms are well-deserved in terms of player development. Here’s to a State grad winning the lottery tonight!

ParticipantWufpacker, as the father of 3 boys, that both galls me and amuses me infinitely!!

ParticipantEnd of half possession was a perfect microcosm of our season. I have no idea why our roster thinks that we’re a great dribbling team. We have one player who should be allowed to dribble consistently. If you’re not Cat, don’t dribble!! I need to get some shut-eye.
SaccoV
ParticipantThose are two of the best offensive possessions of the year for us!!

Participant7-3 guy for FSU versus Anya on a fastbreak opportunity. That is the next GoACC moment of the week!

ParticipantDidn’t someone on here tell me that the WatchESPN app is mostly fecal matter? Shaun Kirk sighting!
SaccoV
ParticipantI think I count five possessions and four turnovers. Yep, we should be fine with Cat on the bench.
SaccoV
ParticipantNice to see GFK go for the leaner two for his first attempt.

ParticipantThanks, GSO. I might get it done tonight but organizing a move from 400 miles away isn’t easy.

ParticipantTo Ryebread’s point, I think what all of us are hoping is that Gott changes his system or his philosophy in order to fit what he has. There’s one thing to be stubborn if you’re a proven NCAA championship winner or consistent conference contender, but we haven’t been that since V (to be objective, we haven’t been that since Sloan), and this year is the perfect chance for Gott to throw caution to the wind and play loose with his system.
As for development of our players (which is always valid criticism), our entire team needs to learn how to move their feet to get position without dribbling. Anya’s feet are the worst I’ve seen in history: my feet are better at 38 and I haven’t even seen them in two years. Abu’s aren’t much better, and Freeman’s entire offense is based on rebounding. Rowan and Twin A aren’t great at getting space to shoot without the need of multiple screens. The Twins can work somewhat well together, but lack consistency mostly because of very different roles. Shaun Kirk isn’t getting any better on the bench; IMO that kid needs to get more bookend time (time between a stoppage and before the next media break) to help develop.
Gott is a good coach but I’m still fully unconvinced he’s going to take huge steps at State unless he learns to develop and refine also.SaccoV
ParticipantSaw that too Mr.P. We’ve got so much depth at 149 with Clark, Donahue, Speno and Melikan. Not sure if any of those guys can become All-Americans, but they are strong in a dual team format.

ParticipantThat was my weight class when I started wrestling, CoyoteJoe. Unfortunately, after actually running and lifting weights and wrestling, I was really about 138 pounds! Wrestling matches at 160 was a lost cause for me (of course, I was 14 and 6’2″). But I still loved the sport despite my incompetence. I love coaching it just as much because there is no quick fix. It takes effort and work. What is so impressive about Gwiz (though he’s an Olympic caliber wrestler), and you’ll hear this from other coaches, is that he is the most coachable wrestler they know. Even though he’s won two consecutive NCAA titles, he’s always willing to listen and he always willing to work hard to be better. Although Caldwell’s attitude on the mat could be off-putting, Carter Jordan said the same about Darrion. No one out-worked that kid in the wrestling room. Sorry to drone on.

ParticipantPlaying 7 against 11 won’t work. Hell of a fight by our guys, but too many bodies for Louisville, and their offensive plan in the 2nd half worked to perfection. Missed FTs would have made it closer but we got beat by a deeper, better executing team.
SaccoV
ParticipantDoes anyone have our record in the black unis? I know the Herbivore seemed to always lose in them.
SaccoV
ParticipantEffort isn’t a problem. Glad to see Twin A get a three after five or so misses. Forwards are putrid from the FT line. I hope Gott has some interesting trick to come out in the 2nd half with. It feels like we need a haymaker to help keep Louisville playing to our level.
SaccoV
ParticipantI’ve been really disappointed with Lenard over the last two games, and his play so far in this one isn’t much better. BJ Anya has no reason to ever not be directly under the basket. Louisville will win by 30 if our forwards have to guard their guys off the dribble.
