ParticipantIs she tamed, BJD? I’m hoping not.
SaccoV
ParticipantAnd perhaps a phone number?
SaccoV
ParticipantI would ask that we get more reports from Lauren Gardner in the 2nd half and at half time.

ParticipantFastback, I was in grad school at Clem’s boy when that game was being played. We were up big, and did a ton of dumb things to help TT get back in it. But again, I put that more on Kingsbury being a true gunslinger. Mike White ain’t that just yet.
SaccoV
ParticipantFastback, Mike White isn’t a 1000th as good as Kingsbury was.
SaccoV
ParticipantBJD, Lauren had me at “Thanks …”

ParticipantNot an EZU fan, but I’m tired of Va Tech. Despite being dominant in our conference, especially in that terrible division, they have done exactly Jack Squat nationally. And the recent win over the Buckeyes looks all the worse for today’s pathetic showing.
SaccoV
ParticipantHell of a beginning.
SaccoV
ParticipantBJD, I said on another thread that Swoff made a call to the officials in that one. 90% of the flags went against EZU in he 2nd half.
SaccoV
ParticipantEZU is getting flagged for pretty much lining up. It looks like the Coastal has its champion being given every advantage to win the game.
SaccoV
ParticipantBall clearly hits the ground on the TD catch by VT. Swoff keeping his championship game scenario in tact!
SaccoV
ParticipantI just got a flashback to the Clemson game last year.
SaccoV
ParticipantIt appears Swoff made his call to the officials in the 2nd quarter. At least three horrible calls go against EZU: a false start that was clearly initiated by VT (prevents 1st down), a hold that negates a TD run (called on the wrong player, the film never shows anything close to a penalty) and a blatant missed PI.

ParticipantEdit: Clemson = Tully Blanchard — World Television Champion. Great on TV but never the Numero Uno!

ParticipantI have been contemplating a valid response to this and the only thing that has been in my head since reading the post is how would we compare 70s-80s wrestlers to the current ACC programs. Here is my stupid response:
Atlantic (The Crockett-in-Charlotte division)
FSU = Ric Flair (19-time world champion) They are the man, were the man, and perhaps might always be the man.
Clemson =
BC = Larry Zybyszko — Great in other regions long ago, but basically an over-glorified contender.
NC State = Black Jack Mulligan — 1979 was the last time this name meant much.
WF = Dusty Rhodes — There was a massive spot on Rhodes gut which galls me to this day. And he only won the title by technicality.
Louisville = Gene Anderson — Head twitch.
Syracuse = Angelo Mosca — Who?Coastal (The Crocketts-Move-to-Dallas division)
UN* = Tommy ‘Wildfire’ Rich — The girls might love him, but he never won when it counted.
Duke = Ricky ‘the Dragon’ Steamboat — Not a true top dog but one most will pull for. Only challenged for the title a few times.
Miami = Nikita Koloff — The Russian Sickle was deadly (Miami of the 80s) but his disappearance from earth mirrors Miami’s irrelevance in our conference.
Va Tech = Harley Race — Great champion of yesteryear, but almost faded into complete obscurity. Hopefully resurgent, Race almost died but regained to championship form (read his book if you get a chance).
UVa = Greg ‘the Hammer’ Valentine — Best known for his ability to look inebriated, the Hammer was a staple in the NWA but never much challenged for the title (USHWT doesn’t count.)
Pitt = Johnny Valentine — Most don’t realize how much of a powerhouse they were. Now a forgotten champion.
Ga Tech = Johnny Weaver — The sleeper hold is perhaps the worst finishing move in wrestling history (much like the triple option in CFB)Notre Dame = Haystacks Calhoun — Only good because he weighed 7 times what everyone else did (TV contract that no one else shares)!

ParticipantA satisfying release after a win or the shame of a loss. I’m assuming Alias that you choose the latter? And all this Mack Brown fellatio should stop.
SaccoV
ParticipantA graphic at the beginning of the game confirms BJD’s point regarding next year being Doeren’s true test. We started the 2nd most freshmen last season. The fact that so many freshmen this year are getting significant playing time tells you that we have a serious talent/depth deficiency. His play-calling is worthy of criticism, but I’m not willing two games into this season to throw in the towel. We have three absolute, dead-on losses coming (FSU, Clemson and UL). Everything else is a toss-up, and a bowl appearance after last season is a sure sign of solid progress.
Two favorite things in tonight’s game: 1) Angela Mallen’s hot lisp and 2) The ‘Full’ Monte Nelson!!

ParticipantMak4dPak, Jimbo has lost two games here in Raleigh on years he should have been a national title contender. I hope we play well, but I don’t see the nighttime heroics come through this time.
Stopping the run is the biggest what-if? for this year’s defense. Our pass defense has improved with personnel and a scheme tailored to that personnel.
SaccoV
ParticipantHis defense got such a bad reputation in college because defensively our team was abysmal. Although he will struggle at times in the NBA to guard more athletic players, I think his size and footwork will make the transition to the pro game a breeze.
Also, talk about being ignored, TJ’s rebounding prowess has been completely ignored. Good positioning to rebound on both ends of the floor was consistent for both years. In fact, freshman year was the best indicator that his basketball IQ was far beyond most 19-year-olds because a significant portion of his scoring that year came from offensive rebounds. He wasn’t going to get the ball where he wanted, so he made due with letting his teammates shoot, and grabbing the boards for put-backs.
SaccoV
ParticipantProofreading is a lost art, Dan … as for the prediction, I think 7 wins is very possible. “Soft non-conference schedule” being the key ingredient. This team does not have to be incredibly good to have a good record at season’s end.
SaccoV
ParticipantI think I have put this little episode together:
1) His name is PJ, which to me means the everclear-Tang-fruit bathtub mixture from college.
2) PJ was walking into the Fresh Market looking for fruit. Perhaps to make another PJ?
3) I would only let someone I just borrow my car AFTER I had consumed a few PJ oranges and didn’t remember my own name.
I think this is what happened. Just speculation, of course.

ParticipantIt’s one day before Friday, which means it’s time for … this. Mr. Hairston, you are definitely becoming my favorite Tarheel of all-time!

ParticipantAs Shakespeare would have written, Enter ‘Fats’ from Stage Right. Click here. Why is this story getting funnier to me by the moment?

ParticipantLet the games commence!! Nyang’oro goes the way of Fat Sam and Gummy, full story here.
“Julius Nyang’oro has cooperated with the SBI criminal investigation and has agreed to continue cooperating with the district attorney’s office,” Woodall said in a statement Thursday. “Nyang’oro has also agreed to cooperate fully and completely with the independent (non-criminal) investigation being conducted by Kenneth Wainstein into athletic and academic issues at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.”

ParticipantAlthough I agree with Mr. P regarding Too Big To Fail, this is more evidence to me of what a politician (Thorp, Baddour, Martin, Emmert, etc) really does … nothing. The best course of action for a politician is to 1) do very little in terms of making positive changes to a corrupt system and then 2) give as many reasons possible to avoid culpability for your ineptitude (or incompetence) regarding making positive change/impact. Politicians are interested in public perception, nothing else. Every one of the BOG and BOT of the UNC system should be considered accessories as their complicity in this most ridiculous scandal is evident. Many other posters have asked the question of ‘Who’s minding the store?’ In this case, there was truly no one until Wainstein (at $922/hr) reminded many of us of the $750 toilet seats that the Navy needed in their ships back in the 1980s.
